another attack by pit bull
(04-30-2012, 09:15 PM)Lady Cop Wrote: that's what every pit owner in this thread said.
it deserves to be read in its entirety.

Ask someone who got attacked and lived. It is amazing I didn't get killed last year when the rotti got ahold of me.

Obviously I am not a pit or other vicious breed lover but I will be damned if I would ever chance it. It G*d forbid I got bitten again, I would much rather it be with a Poodle or Beagle or JRT than a pit.

My sister had a pit and it was the most well behaved, smartest and loving dog I've ever been around. It's a pits natural instinct to protect their owners and family when something is wrong.
Why people train these dogs to be mean is beyond me.

The problem is that most of these stories are about good, well behaved dogs.

There's something about this breed that can set them off in a split second and nobody seems to know what it is.

As much as love them, I would never have a pitbull, especially with kids around. They're too unpredictable.

The dog that mauled a one-year-old boy to death has been temporarily spared by a judge so activists can plead with local officials not to destroy him.

A hearing on Friday will determine whether Onion should be euthanized by officials in Henderson, Nevada, or turned over to an animal-rights group that will send him to a sanctuary for aggressive dogs.
The dog shook Jeremiah as he bit down, breaking the boy's neck and mangling his face.

'There is nothing vicious about the attack,' Richard Rosenthal, the head asshole of the group that is fighting for Onion, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Part of it is that the inbreeding causes their skulls to shrink generation to generation. Most "purebred" dogs like pitbulls, mastiffs, dobermans etc have chronic migraines as adults.

All dogs will bite, no matter how friendly or loyal given the proper circumstances.

All dogs might bite, but their jaws don't lock on their victims like a pitbull does.

oh I agree. No pitbull would ever be let near my kids, ever.

That locked-jaw thing is a myth.

LAS CRUCES NM— A 16-month-old girl died Tuesday after being mauled by a pit bull in the backyard of her grandparents’ home, police said.

A neighbor, responding to cries for help, tried to shoot the dog with a .45-caliber handgun but accidentally shot the grandmother in the leg as she tried to pull off the dog, said Dan Trujillo, spokesman for the Las Cruces Police Department. Her name was not released.

The neighbor, a 69-year-old man, then followed the pit bull around to the side of the house on the 800 block of Stone Canyon Drive and fatally shot the dog, Trujillo said.

The toddler had multiple injuries to her head and chest and was rushed to nearby Mountainview Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, Trujillo said.

Trujillo said the 2-year-old pit bull “was a big dog” but he did not know its weight. It belonged to the family but it wasn’t known Tuesday afternoon whether the child’s grandmother was the owner.

The dog apparently attacked the little girl about 11 a.m. Tuesday, and when the grandmother tried to intervene, the dog attacked her.

The neighbor, who heard the grandmother’s screams, retrieved his handgun, called 911 to report the attack, then went to the backyard to try to stop the attack, firing several shots, one of which struck the grandmother.

She was taken to an El Paso hospital for treatment, Trujillo said.

The fatal attack was the latest in a series by pit bulls across the state. Last week, 74-year-old Clifford Wright of Santa Fe was mauled to death by his pit bull while he watered plants in his front yard.

Police on Tuesday euthanized the pit bull that killed Wright. Police said the dog and other pets at the Wright home looked healthy and showed no signs of abuse. A prior complaint involving dogs at the home was made in 2005, when Wright was bitten by another pit bull.

In early March, a 57-year-old man was hospitalized after he was attacked by a pit bull and a pit bull mix while he walked early in the morning in the Santa Teresa area.

On Easter last year, four pit bulls fatally attacked 48-year-old Margaret Salcedo while she walked on the street near her Truth or Consequences home. The owners of the pit bulls, John and Maria Hardiman, were eventually charged with four counts of violating the state’s dangerous dog law, and in January, misdemeanor charges against the Hardimans were bound over to state District Court.

No charges have been filed in Tuesday’s death of the toddler, but Trujillo said the case is still under investigation.

Neighbor Clarice Irons, who went to the home to comfort the grandmother before she was taken to an El Paso hospital, said the woman was “just frantic, hysterical through all this” and expressed deep remorse over the dog attack.

“She was responsible for that child, and I’m sure she took that responsibility very seriously,” Irons said. “That was her baby, her baby granddaughter.”

The grandmother, Irons said, kept saying, “Why is this happening? I can’t believe this.”

Irons described the residents of the home as a close-knit family who had regular weekend gatherings.

Another neighbor, Gerald Otis, said several other dog owners who walked their pets on the street were wary of the pit bull, which was rumored to have attacked dogs on two other occasions.

Trujillo said no complaints had been filed with city police about the pit bull in the past.

“Everyone who went by there (the house), that we know, especially if they had small dogs, was afraid that dog would get loose,” Otis said.

Irons said she heard the neighbor who responded to the grandmother’s cries for help tell police that he accidentally shot the grandmother while trying to kill the dog.

“I think he knows he did the right thing,” Irons said. “I think if he had not killed that dog, it would have killed both people. This was a big dog, big and strong.”

74-year-old Clifford Wright, left.

A shocking 911 call reveals the devastating moment a Santa Fe man returns home to find his father has been brutally mauled by the family dog.
The pit bull, Achilles, which had been in the family since he was a puppy, was euthanised on Tuesday after killing 74-year-old Clifford Wright in the gruesome attack.
In the frantic emergency call, placed last Wednesday evening, Gavin Wright, 27, tries to explain to the dispatcher the extent of his father's wounds, adding that he had bled to death on the porch.
'My dad is dead on the front porch. It looks like my dog got a hold of him,' Mr Wright screamed.
Becoming more emotional, Mr Wright then said: 'My dad is fucked up. Did you not hear me? My fucking dad is dead! … I don’t think you understand I can’t help him. You don’t understand the wounds I’m talking about. He bled to death.'

Pits like all other dogs can make great pets, I know a lot of people that have them and love them. The inherent problem with them is simply they have the physical ability to kill, teeth, jaws and muscle. If they do freak as any other dog can do they have the ability to cause more dammage in a shorter amount of time. People don't get all worried about chihuahuas, but they probably bite more people than pits, they just can't tear off a leg.

I had an australian shepherd once I got as a pup. That dog bit EVERYBODY but us. If you looked at our house, he'd chase your ass down the street. One time he pulled a guy off his bike for riding too close to our property. Too overprotective. Id never get a pitt bull for along the same reason. A friend has one and every time I've seen her she's been sweet as honey, but I wont leave my kids over there. Theyre lovely people, and took their dog to obedience school but who's to say that's enough? I'm probably being prejudiced but too bad.
Just shut up. Just shut the fuck up right now.

most of the pits and similar breeds in this entire thread have been beloved family pets. there's something in their genes/makeup that compells these attacks. it's just not worth the risk.
how much bloody evidence do people need?

My pitt is down at my husbands shop untill I can find a new home for her, she's loveable but I can't have her around the baby. I wouldn't be sad, however, if she flips out one day and bites my husband in the ass.

I grew up with dobermans my whole life. My grandpa bred and raised them. Everyone in the whole family had dobies. They're usually very close and protective to one person...in our case, it was my mom because she trained them. We couldn't even joke around with her and pretend we were wrestling and that dog would be right there growling with a warning to back off. Still, none of us were ever bit or attacked. One neighbor girl was bit because she was taunting our dog, and as far as I'm concerned, she deserved it because she was warned over and over not to mess with the dog.

There's no thread in here or anywhere else that I've seen about dobies, rotts, german shepherds or any other breed attacking or killing people. A few isolated incidents I'm sure, but not weekly or daily like with the pits.

After all these stories, and many more to come, anyone who has a pitbull around a child is nuts.

When I was 8 yrs old we had this ignorant, redneck neighbor that beat his Doberman. It was a huge doberman too, the biggest one I've seen. He also thought it was funny to say "sick her, Turbo" as I ran screaming for my life. Goddamn I hated that fat fuck.

So anyway the damn dog really did attack me one day. I'm outside playing and the dog comes out of nowhere and grabs me by the shirt, throws me face first on the ground and starts shaking me like a rag doll. I'm out there screaming bloody murder and not a person in the whole fucking neighborhood hears me. Finally he lets go and I somehow didn't have a scratch on me other than my shirt being torn to shreds. I think he was actually going easy on me, If he really wanted to kill me he could have. Scared the bejesus out of me though, I've have a panic attack whenever I see a Doberman now hah.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- A 16-month-old girl has died from injuries suffered when a pit bull mauled her in the family backyard in Las Cruces.

The incident happened shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday in the 800 block of Stone Canyon in the Las Alamedas Estates in East Las Cruces. The dog was in its backyard and the child was being watched by the grandmother when the dog turned on the child and grandmother.

Las Cruces Police said a neighbor overheard the commotion, went to the home with a handgun and shot the pit bull five or six times, killing the dog. Police said the man accidentally shot the girl's 52-year-old paternal grandmother in the leg.

The baby was taken to Mountain View hospital in Las Cruces in critical condition where she died and the grandmother was taken to University Medical Center in El Paso.

Las Cruces Police said charges were not expected to be filed against the neighbor who shot and killed the dog.

Neighbors told ABC-7 the dog appeared vicious and that they would not walk near the home because they feared the pit bull. One neighbor, Chris Wallord, went to the backyard after hearing the gunfire and found the grandmother holding the baby under a ground-level trampoline. Wallord said the grandmother handed him the baby.

"I was concerned the baby was not breathing well," said Wallord. "I'm a respiratory therapist so my concern was to make sure she had a good airway and was stable and was ready for the paramedics to come take care of her."

Police say the family's 2-year-old pit bull attacked the young girl in the backyard of her grandparent's residence. The girl's grandmother tried to intervene but was attacked by the dog.

"That baby was the apple of her grandfather's eye," said neighbor Gwen Forcen. "It's such a tragedy."

No names have been released.

That's horrible Sally. I hate assholes who teach their dogs/pets to be be mean and vicious. Yes, that dog could defiantly have killed you.

My mom has the most gentle touch with animals I've ever seen, and all of our pets were trained well. She can get them to the point of the dog knowing by the look on her face what's up...good or bad.

Oh no! You did not just say that! While I do not consider myself an apologist for the breed, I do responsibly own a pit bull. Big flipping deal! I have had her since she was knee high to a puddle duck. But, I will include that in my last will and testament; if I should die at the locked-jaws of my beloved Brindle, please log-in to mockforums.net and tell LC she was right. Hahahaha! Arms and legs ripped off, my ass! You have no idea.
