Forget your personal politics for a moment (if you can). From a strategic standpoint, do you think his saying that he supports gay marriage was a good campaign strategy or do you think it will cost him more votes than he might gain?
I'm not going to go in to details now, but my gut reaction was that it will hurt him more than help him in his re-election efforts (although I'm not opposed to gay marriage myself).
Your thoughts?

Well, here we go, some of you haters will say something very stupid.
I don't mean to start off on a negative note, but i can hear you now
(and you know who you are), oh, the crazy stupid liberals. I think Obama supporting same sex can only help. At least he tries to be real and honest about what he believes. He is a progressive thinker. Noone chooses to be gay, period.
I counseled young people (16 thru 21) for 18 years and felt their pain.
This was in the 70's and 80's and most of male students (residential
center) were the macho type and if these gays had "come out" they
would have been taunted constantly so i advised them to not tell due
to the social environment at that time. I also worked with transgendered
students. One of the students killed themselves two years after leaving
our job training center. Some of the chromosomes get screwed up during process of conception and subsequent splitting of cells.
Brain studies have shown different characteristics in those who are gay,
transgendered, etc. Mother Nature sometimes screws up during the
miracle of conception. So, yes, I believe this group of people should be
entitled to the same rights as a heterosexual couple. They have even
shown brain scans of killers, i.e., sociopaths, psychopaths, etc.
I guess i don't understand why some people feel threatened by giving
understanding and support to this group in our society.

Well I would say He definitely lost North Carolina with the possibility of 30 some other states that have enacted bans on gay marriage.

I appreciate his honesty. He would lose votes either way.

I don't think He was being honest, I think he thought it would be a good political move and would garner the votes of the younger generation.
You need to pay attention to what is said not what you think is said.
They are waiting for the older generation to die off.

Yep. Interestingly opposition to gay marriage is very high among black voters.

I think it's funny when idiots like Dick say Obama's public stance was a coldly calculated political move designed only as a shrewd way to garner votes, while AT THE EXACT SAME TIME decrying it as a massive political blunder that will cost him support and ultimately the election. So which is it? Is he a political evil genius or a naive fool? FFS do you blackprez haters even listen to yourselves any more?

Ok, let me rephrase. I appreciate him taking a stance and not being wishy-washy about it. I also appreciated his reasons for supporting gay marriage. Still either way, he is going to put off one side or the other and lose their votes.

Go pick up your welfare check and let the adults talk.
I can't believe you think anyone who supports shelving babies and late term abortion should be President no matter what color His skin is.

I disagree. The votes he stood to lose were gone already. His stance may cost him in the minority vote sector, especially those religious black voters. But his real base was always the young political activist crowd and if anything this may cause a groundswell of support among people who were beginning to suspect him of being just another politician. This is a risky move a lot like Kennedy's civil rights stance. I think it will pay dividends but either way he just made the race a hell of a lot more interesting while taking the focus off the economy where he's taking a beating. Smart...

So you think His decision to openly support gay marriage now was a political move?
He lost most if not all of the hispanic vote, He lost the moderate religious right as well as the Jewish vote, He lost the conservative democrat vote and he lost the votes of the people in the states that have already enacted a ban on gay marriage, I think the 20 something crowd is fucked.
It almost appears that he wants out and losing is an option.

I can't believe you think anyone who supports shelving babies and late term abortion should be President no matter what color His skin is. That doesn't answer the question, dumbass. How can Obama's stance be a shrewdly calculated political move and a badly thought out blunder all at the same time? Is it possible that the evil liberal socialist commie genius and his team of handlers somehow missed a political atmosphere that was obvious to some guy calling himself a dick and posting on the internet? You missed your calling, brainiac dick. You should be throwing your immense political savvy behind one of your favorites...

I think that is exactly his intent, I'm just not convinced it will pay more than it costs him.
Like you said, risky.

It almost appears that he wants out and losing is an option. I don't think so but it will be fascinating to watch. I think it was political in the sense that he had to pull the focus from the economy and in a decisive fashion. The rest of it, what votes he'll win or lose, will shake out in days to come. But I think he's gonna come out smelling like a rose on this.

Do you think all politicians are smart? make only good choices? have a crew of people that they call advisors that are smart? make good recommendations?
Politics is all about choices good or bad, one political move could be good or bad, Obama thinks his shit don't stink and that he can say anything,do anything and then just forget about it later, His first campaign was full of this very same type of thing.
Only difference is this time He won't be the first black man who has a shot at being Presidnt He will be the first black President with his foot in his mouth.
He made a very large political blunder His skin color has nothing to do with it, The vote will reflect the political damage this time around.

I heard one talking head say that Obama was also trying to gain more support from the "Hollywood" types. Maybe he'll get a public endorsement from BrAngelina. Could be he even gets an invite to the wedding.

The people who have always supported him will continue to do so, I don't see that changing & those that wait in anticipation for him to fuck up simply have new fodder. Blah blah fucking blah.
There are people in Washington who were put there by the people who flat out refuse to work with this president under one guise or another. If these people worked for me I'd fire almost every last one of them, I don't want anyone on my team who isn't willing to work together for a common goal. I hate this shit & I truly wish I didn't even care.

The Key words in your post Duchess are "common goal", there is no fucking way all of Obamas goals are the goals that many people would consider to be their goals for the direction of the country.
Why would you want people to work towards goals that are not positive or helpful?
I would fire anyone that doesn't have the nuts to oppose wrong shit.

Dick, believe it or not but your way isn't always the best way, your ideas are not always the best ideas. That's just the way life is. There isn't even any middle ground in Washington these days, compromise is not in anyone's vocabulary. Those people don't care about us. The only time we as a nation are given any thought is when they want our vote. They don't care about doing the right thing whatever that may be at any given time.
