MUSIC - Good New Releases
#1
Damn, I love Bonnie Raitt. Maybe even in a ghey way, but mostly because every old tune she remakes is all hers and sounds great. She's also a very cool lady, imo. "Slipstream" is her new album; really like her version of Gerry Rafferty's Right Down the Line. Good stuff.

If you like Bonnie Raitt try Susan Tedeschi and her frigging amazing guitarist husband Derek Trucks. I can't root around for links on this phone but it's a rich bluesy sound like Raitt does...

Trucks definitely kicks ass; sounds like he's been playing for decades but I think he's only in his mid or late 20s? Know him from his stints with the Allman Brothers. Will give Ms. Tedeschi a listen.

Ma: I've never seen Bonnie Raitt in concert. She's one that would definitely get my lazy crowd-hatin' ass outta the house. A little jealous here. (Liked the Orgone stuff, nice and funky).

SUSAN TEDESCHI??? OMG check this shit out HotD. I used to go to Amherst whenever she was doing sets at clubs there, just freaking sweet. Her catalogue is stunning

Good call Dono.

I listened to her a bit like 10 years back; liked her sound but she kinda fell off of my radar. I'll go deeper - thanks for the tip, guys.

Didn't know she was married to Trucks. Maybe he's older than I think? (Edit: Just looked it up: yep, he's 33 and she's in her early 40s - sound great together.)

I like Bonnie. Never seen her in concert. I haven't been to a concert in so long. I am over due. Thing 2 wants me to take him to a Slipknot concert. He is cruuaazzzyy!

Dave Mathews was here the other night and the traffic to the arena was out of control. For some reason I can't stand him.

I fucking HATE remakes.

I usually like Stevie Nicks, but she tried to cover Dave Mathews' 'Crash Into Me' a couple of years ago, and I almost threw up.

Can you please construct a sentence that uses the following words, 'Midwest Spy' 'HairoftheDog' and 'release'?

TIA

In my mind, there's a difference between a cover version and a remake. When Bonnie Raitt does something by another artist, she remakes it. It's like homage to the original, but with her unique take and style. She's not simply snaggin' a good song and doing it the same way. That's HairOfTheDog's take on what she chooses to release, Midwest Spy (constructed that sentence for you, wink).

It doesn't matter what I think though; it's totally subjective and thankfully there's plenty of music out there for every taste.

If there's a relatively new release, or even something older, that you really like, post it up - old or new artist. I'll give it a listen. Resist posting Dan Fogelberg though, I know his full body of work already. Smiley_emoticons_smile

P.s. Hope you had a nice weekend trip, MS. Sounds like it was good fun and good weather. Off to the grind.

Thanks for the effort regarding the sentence. I'm going to return it to you, however, and let you try a little harder this next time. Awink

I love music, and have recently switched the local station I listen to, in an effort to open my ears to new music. I will let you know if I hear something that I think you'd deem 'good'.

Great trip to SE Wisconsin, but a lot of driving. Golfed twice and spent one day at Lake Michigan (perfect weather).

A great time was had by all. Thanks for asking!

We caught up with Matthews just as news hit the Web that former President Jimmy Carter believed racism was the root of some of the negativity directed toward President Obama in recent weeks. The 42-year-old singer-songwriter offered a unique perspective, as a man who split his childhood between the United States and South Africa during apartheid. The following is an edited version of the interview.

CNN: President Carter said he thinks that a lot of the animosity directed toward President Obama is race related.

Dave Matthews: Of course it is! I found there’s a fairly blatant racism in America that’s already there, and I don’t think I noticed it when I lived here as a kid. But when I went back to South Africa, and then it’s sort of thrust in your face, and then came back here — I just see it everywhere. There’s a good population of people in this country that are terrified of the president only because he’s black, even if they don’t say it. And I think a lot of them, behind closed doors, do say it.

Maybe I’m paranoid about it, but I don’t think someone who disagreed as strongly as they do with Obama — if it was Clinton — would have stood up and screamed at him during his speech. (Shakes his head) I don’t think so.

“Maybe” you’re paranoid about it? Dude, you are paranoid about it. And wrong. Does this idiot not remember the 8 years of non-stop yelling the far left did against Bush and his administration on any number of issues? The remaining obsession many of them with Bush and his administration – wanting to have them “investigated” for alleged “war crimes” and “Constitutional abuses”? Can’t blame that on “racism,” so what would Dave Matthews blame it on? Scratch that. It’s clear he really hasn’t thought about it, because the only Presidential history we’re allowed to analyze is Democrat Presidential history because only conservatives are ‘mean’ to Presidents with whom they disagree.

Really. What made CNN decide to question a musician about Jimmy Carter’s comments? Since when did CNN start looking to entertainers to give political opinions? Don’t get me wrong – I’m not one of those “they should just shut up and sing” types. Everyone has a right to express their opinion, but I get the distinct impression that people like Dave Matthews wants people like me to “shut up and serve” … this President – just like celebridiots who pledged to do so earlier this year, all in the interest of “harmony” and “getting along.”

If Matthews really is interested in bringing people together, he can start with condemning this WH for demonizing its mainstream political opposition since Day 1, and he can start calling for civility from its attacks dogs like David Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel. He can also clue the WH in on the fact that it’s supposed to be the government who serves the people, not the other way around, and about the fact that you are not “unpatriotic” simply because you disagree with the President. Oh, and he can also start being a little more civil himself. Accusing a “good population of people” of “racism” is a pretty serious charge, and one he shouldn’t throw around lightly.

This might be my favorite version of "Angel from Montgomery." I had a chance to see Susan twice, once here at home and another time we made the trip to South Carolina for the start of her tour. We were going to Raleigh first but then realized she had a tuneup show the night before at Asheville so we went there and it was the best choice. It was a smaller venue, more intimate, and the band was literally humming. They jammed for hours working out the rust and the show blew us away.

Hey HotD: check this out, best breakup song ever:

Wow, really soulful voice and lyrics; damn good song. Only knew briefly of her from the Lilith Fair deal back in the late 90s. I've been missing out; really turned on by her stuff.

Going to Amoeba on Wednesday for the monthly used vinyl rummage. I only allow myself 3; hoping I can find "Just Won't Burn". If not, I'll pick up the CD.

P.s. I really liked her version of Son of a Preacherman with Soul Summit at the Berks Jazz Fest too.

The new RUSH album is just being released, Clockwork Angels.

Only heard two songs so far. "Caravan" is a pretty good song, but "Headlong Flight" really kicks ass. Neil Peart on the drums is hard to beat, imo. You can give it a listen here:

She kinda reminds me of this chick, in a weird way...

That's about the only piece of hers I like, and it's an impromptu..
