I'd never heard of him until he was killed but in hindsight, I loved him deeply too (along with the 3 men that were killed with him). Love hurts.

Too embarrassed to justify, at the end of the day it's still horrible.

This is gonna fuel a lot of flames, imo. Stevens feared that he was an Al Queda target months ago. Now, The National Counterterrorism Center Director has declared that the anti-Islamic film and protests were a facade to trigger carefully-planned killings.
Here's the article link and photos of the embassy and flag-burning protest: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/am...-1.1163574 On a side note, I read yesterday that the actress in the film, "Innocence of Muslims" is suing the producer because she was misled about the movie's plot and parts of her lines were dubbed over. She claims to be in hiding following death threats.

Yeah, I think it was a pretty transparent cover considering the date and the roles of those who were killed. Now that it's being declared that it was indeed a pre-planned terrorist attack against Americans overseas (at least by some officials), I'm anxious to see how/if it affects our plans in the region. Never ends...

I still don't understand how "light" he was travelling.
I consider myself a target. Since about a year. We don't park our cars outside anymore and I drive around armed. And that's just me. You have about 5000 crazies here which spoil the name of 24 mill, but those 5000 are on a dirty mission at the moment. Anything will do. I know that, everybody else here does too, so how the fuck an Ambassador could take it that easy is beyond me. Ours here travels in a 5 car convoy. Fully armed and armoured. And by now everybody knows that ESPECIALLY if you are liked here in the community, your target value goes up accordingly. And yes, here is some inside knowledge, each Embassy has 7 Marines. Depending on location some get more, but security is supposed to be provided by the local Government. On Thursday we had a nasty surprise when 1000 locals stormed the Embassy. The Ambassador made sure that none of those 1000 people will get hurt by not giving the shoot order. Once the local military came running in, the protesters left. With plenty of printers and PC's as they managed to brake down the store door. Plus all the 200.000US$ armoured Land Cruisers they burned. So what are those 7 Marines supposed to do? They are supposed to make very sure that no confidential material falls into the hands of the other side. They are basically shredders. After that is done, then only are they supposed to look after their people. Didn't know that either before. If you are being chopped to pieces in a corner of an Embassy while a Marine is busy sending page after page thru a shredder next to you, and you call for help, he will simply tell you "Hang on Sir, just another 28 pages and I'll be right there with you. Thank you."

I think it's insane to leave the security up to the host country, it's stupid. We have embassies around the world & in many places that Americans are hated & they are supposed to protect our people. Jesus Christ. Our country is run by tards from top to bottom.

FWIW, the Marine Corps released a statement on Thursday saying no Marines were stationed at the Embassy in Tripoli or the Consulate in Benghazi. "Security", such as it was, apparently contracted to a British firm who agreed to the ROE established by the State Deptartment. No bullets!

Friday, Libyans protested the killings at the Embassy - holding the rogue Libyan militia at least partly responsible. The militia groups are described in some articles as armed Islamic extremists that are not part of Libya's National Army and had reportedly been kept at bay by Gadhafi during his rule. Some of those detained in connection with the killings include members of Ansar al Sharia.
The backlash against Libyan militias was massive, according to the Associated Press, which reported that tens of thousands rallied against armed militias in Benghazi before hundreds took on the Ansar al Sharia compound. The Islamist group has been accused of involvement in the attack last week that killed U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, a charge that it denies. Banners at the protests paid tribute to Stevens as marchers chanted slogans against extremism and the armed militias that wield power in Libya. Lots of fragmentation and unrest. So far, looks like some of the militia groups have heeded the National Army's demand that they removed themselves from stations at former governmental buildings within 48 hours. I think some of these uprising against westerners is nothing more than economic jealousy. I have seen this when working overseas. The reason we are so prosperous and successful as nations is because we have a strong work ethic. If you want to succeed in the west, you have to work hard and work well.
Many times I have heard and seen where they employ westerners overseas, westerners build up the companies or hospitals or whatever it is, then the locals takes over management etc, then it gradually declines and goes downhill. They just don't have the same standards as we do. A good example of what I mean is that fire in Qatar, part of the problem was shoddy workmanship. We have all sorts of building laws and regulations that restrict the likelihood of that happening here. Whilst some hate westerners, many would give their eye teeth to immigrate here in a second!!!! That's for sure.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) acknowledged on Wednesday that House Republicans had consciously voted to reduce the funds allocated to the State Department for embassy security since winning the majority in 2010. On Wednesday morning, CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien asked the Utah Republican if he had "voted to cut the funding for embassy security." "Absolutely," Chaffetz said. Story

"In fact, more House Democrats – 149 of them — voted for the cuts than did House Republicans, of which 147 voted for them...."

We can't afford homies and troops. You would think the violent homies would be good troops, but they scatter if you shoot at them. (Which I have always wanted to try, btw.)
The boy is headed to Brunei in a few days to teach them how to find explosive caches. Apparently we haven't pissed off ALL the Muslims in the world yet, so we are going to give it a hell of a try. Nothing seems to piss countries off like having us help them.

More details emerging (or at least becoming public). Mrs. Clinton's briefing next week and the final reports from the independent review council's investigation should be interesting, to say the least.
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. counterterrorism officials told lawmakers Thursday that uncooperative or less-than-capable local law enforcement in Libya, Egypt and Tunisia is slowing the search for suspects in the death of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in Libya on Sept. 11. Authorities in the region have not yet arrested many of the suspects the U.S. wants to question about the violent attack on the American compound in Benghazi on Sept. 11, according to two U.S. officials briefed on a private House Intelligence Committee hearing Thursday, where counterterrorism, intelligence and law enforcement chiefs disclosed the information to lawmakers. The U.S. officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly disclose the information, said Egypt has arrested Egyptian Islamic Jihad member Muhammad Jamal Abu Ahmad for possible links to the attack, but key al-Qaida sympathizers remain free. They added that U.S. requests to go after the suspects unilaterally have also been rebuffed. The arrest was initially reported by The Wall Street Journal. The officials said that Thursday's hearing was intended to re-focus lawmakers' discussions on the status of the investigation into finding those who carried out the attack and holding them accountable. Until now, discussions had largely focused on how the White House described the attack in its aftermath and whether U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice played down al-Qaida's possible role by blaming it on an angry mob. The hearing comes a week before Secretary of State Hillary Clinton briefs lawmakers on an independent review of the attack by an accountability review board, led by retired Ambassador Thomas Pickering. Officials expect that the review will focus on security assessments done of the consulate before the attack, as well as the actions of the diplomatic security agents during it. Three U.S. officials say the security team did not fire a single shot, as a crowd of militants and looters overwhelmed the compounds of the local Libyan security team. The State Department agents lost track of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens during the incident, in the heavy smoke after the militants set fire to the building. Stevens was overcome by smoke and was later carried out of the damaged building by Libyans who took him to a local hospital where he apparently died from smoke inhalation. His exit from the building was filmed on a camera cellphone and posted on YouTube. It later became part of a composite video crafted by the intelligence community to show lawmakers a real-time sequence of the attack, weaving it together with surveillance video from a CIA drone and from the consulate's security cameras. U.S. intelligence has blamed the attack on militants who are members of a number of different groups, from the local Libyan militia Ansar al-Shariah, whose members were seen at the U.S. consulate during the attack, to militants with links to al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb — core al-Qaida's leading representative in the African region. The consulate's cameras captured many of the faces of armed men in a mob, and some have been questioned, but most remain free. U.S. intelligence efforts have been hampered by the evacuation of CIA officers from Benghazi in the aftermath of the attack. Libyan officials could not be reached for comment. http://start.new.toshiba.com/news/read.p...3E&ps=1011 |
