GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE, OR DO THEY?
#21
Jim, thanks for posting ^^^.

There aren't going to be any magic solutions. I think most people realize that. Responsible gun owners are awesome. My dad, step-dad and grandfathers all fit that category.

People (like me and others) want to blame somebody/something. I really look at the possible solutions to this and realize there are none.

I just hate the idea that these 26 people died at the hands of a monster and there's really nothing that anyone can do to prevent something similar in the future.

Hey Six, User is right. Everyone at the school was murdered with the Bushmaster .223 (or AR-15).

It's a semi-automatic weapon with a pistol-grip to improve its lethality (a nice feature).

It was used in the DC Beltway murders, the spree-killing in Virginia in Jan of 2010 and in Alabama when a psycho went on a rampage and killed another 10 or so a couple of years back.

These types of weapons honestly have no place in our society. I mean, do you truly need a semi-automatic weapon to hunt?

That was not directed at you personally Six.

I'd be okay if these weapons wee banned.

I'm not saying I want to own one of those guns but I sure as hell want to retain my right to own one. Don't take my rights away because others don't know how to act.

Some of you are making this about the guns available, it's not about guns, it's about messed up people not getting the help they need. Work on a law in regards to that. We don't need more laws in regards to guns.

I am a bit of two minds on this, on one hand, No, I don't think anyone NEEDS an "Ashault Type" rifle and would be ok if they were banned
On the other hand, how do you put the genie back in the bottle? Hundreds of thousands of them out there, many in the hands of criminals already, I am not giving up mine.
How do you write a fair law to deal with this? They didn't do so well last time.
Duchess is right, this is not about guns, its fucked up people that get guns.

THIS is the problem. Long but worth a read if one is truly interested.

While every family's story of mental illness is different, and we may never know the whole of the Lanza's story, tales like this one need to be heard -- and families who live them deserve our help.

Three days before 20 year-old Adam Lanza killed his mother, then opened fire on a classroom full of Connecticut kindergartners, my 13-year old son Michael (name changed) missed his bus because he was wearing the wrong color pants.

“I can wear these pants,” he said, his tone increasingly belligerent, the black-hole pupils of his eyes swallowing the blue irises.

“They are navy blue,” I told him. “Your school’s dress code says black or khaki pants only.”

“They told me I could wear these,” he insisted. “You’re a stupid bitch. I can wear whatever pants I want to. This is America. I have rights!”

“You can’t wear whatever pants you want to,” I said, my tone affable, reasonable. “And you definitely cannot call me a stupid bitch. You’re grounded from electronics for the rest of the day. Now get in the car, and I will take you to school.”

I live with a son who is mentally ill. I love my son. But he terrifies me.

Agree, completely.

It's more than 'so sad' Ramseykittens.

Dont you get it?

There's the next mass murderer and there are probably a thousand more like him.

Unfortunately, most parents like her don't know what to do. She has a plan.

So while it is indeed 'sad', she's identified it and is hopefully able to keep him from her and her other two kids... and the rest of society.

I don't want to take away someone's right to own a gun but who says when the "arms" are deadly enough?

I think Lieberman suggested just discontinuing producing assault type weapons but not attempting to take away those already legally owned.

Pumpkin. *snicker* You don't know how funny that really is.

I think you are more focused on the guns out there than the people behind the guns. I don't say that meanly, I think you've probably looked at your kids a zillion times since this most recent shooting and thought the guns need to be taken away as well as one's right to have those guns. I don't consider the guns, I consider the people, I think that's where the problem is & not with the guns.

I'll post a couple of articles later that perfectly express the outrage, anger, sadness and helplessness that people feel about this issue.

Suffice it to say, I'd rather take my chances with a mentally ill person with a knife or bomb that an AR-15.

I've done nothing but acknowledge the 2nd Amendment and people's right to bear arms.

I'm also interested in making sure this never happens again in this country I love.

We as Americans should be completely outraged that this happened, but I get the feeling that 2nd Amendment supporters aren't.

I think people are forgetting the most important thing in all of this - the loss of so many lives. Too many people are focusing on the guns or people's rights or Adam's mother must have been a shitty mother.

Maybe we should all concentrate on the anguish and the pain the families are going through right now and stop bickering about the other stuff. There is plenty of time for that. But for now just appreciate and and cherish those you love.
