US talk show host Oprah Winfrey says she was the victim of racism during a recent visit to Switzerland.

She says an assistant refused to serve her in an upmarket handbag shop in Zurich.

Winfrey, one of the richest women in the world, was apparently told the bags on display were “too expensive” for her.

This incident came amid a political row over plans by some Swiss towns to ban asylum seekers from being allowed in some public places.

Unless it's on video, it didn't happen and she is making it up for publicity.

The manager of the shop says it was a big “misunderstanding”. However a witness to the incident said the assistant looked Oprah up and down, shook her head as if to say “not for you jigaboo!” And turned her back on her.

The manager then apparently realised who it was and the $35,000 bag in question was taken down from its protective display lickety split to let Oprah examine the merchandise.
