MOLLIE TIBBETTS - 20, IOWA - Missing/Found Dead
#21
How was he illegal if he had a job working for a republican politician farmer? I agree he is a POS but making this about him being illegal is wrong.

Cheney has lived in Deep River, Iowa his whole life.  He has a history of run-ins with the law.  Court docs show that he has been arrested for harassment and stalking multiple times, pleading guilty to those charges on two separate occasions.  That's a matter of public record, not a private issue.

Local police would have been remiss had they not looked into Cheney given his history and proximity to Mollie's last sighting.

Persons of interest with and without criminal records are, of course, questioned by police in these types of cases.  And, when reporters are in-the-know about them, the media includes info about searches and interrogations of such POIs  in their coverage of the ongoing investigations.  That's par for the course, as demonstrated in thousands of posts across hundreds of cases in this crime forum.

I guess Maggot  -- whose fingers repeatedly type out such posts as, "I don't see color in people" and "why does the media mention skin color when it's a white dude?" -- thinks stalker/harasser Cheney deserves an apology because he's white.  I don't know why he would mention Cheney's race otherwise, given his self-proclaimed color-blindness.

Anyway, Cheney would have been questioned by LE and the press would have covered it no matter Cheney's race, obviously.  It sucks for people when they hit the media in association with a potential crime and it turns out they're not involved.  But, them's the breaks when a crime goes down in your neck of the woods and you've run up a history of related crimes, like, in this case, stalking and harassing women.

Having said that, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if police planted a red t-shirt on his property in order to bolster probable cause to search his home and haul him in for questioning.

I don't get the thing about the guy blacking out.

And plenty of people are being raped and killed in their own country by american citezens Maggot and some of them are priests, so the whole political thing pisses me off. I agree on having border security but to say that those are the only criminals and that the US will suddenly be safe with a wall is BS.

This is a sad story.

That's what Rivera told police.

He may have said that he blacked out because he's a liar and a coward who doesn't want to accept full responsibility for what exactly he did to Mollie, and/or because he thinks it will help his defense.

It's possible he really did black out, but I doubt it.  According to his reported confession, he sure did remember watching Mollie, chasing her down, and where he dumped her body.

More about the confession

An affidavit attached to the criminal complaint against Rivera alleged that he admitted to investigators he got out of his car and started running alongside Tibbetts.

Tibbetts grabbed her phone and said she was going to call the police. The affidavit says Rivera panicked and then said he blacked out. Rivera next remembers seeing her earphones on his lap, and taking her bloody body out of the trunk of his car, it said.

"The defendant further described during the interview that he dragged Tibbetts on foot from his vehicle to a secluded location in a cornfield," the affidavit said.

Investigators said they had earlier searched the area for Tibbetts but didn't find her, noting the body was covered by corn stalks when recovered early Tuesday.

An autopsy will be performed tomorrow by the state medical examiner's office, which will assist investigators in determining whether Tibbetts had been assaulted or tried to fight him off.

Police say Rivera is cooperating.

I will change my response on illegal immigration to now say I understand what people are saying that this could have been prevented if it weren't so easy for illegals to enter this country. But I still stand beside the arguement that it might have happened anyway at another time by someone else-and the other arguement one could have is to say, "She should have had a gun" just like the school teachers should have had guns so the children don't get shot.

My solution: Get rid of all the men-they seem to be the ones that are raping and murdering. (You know I don't really believe that-but if you want to politicize someone's death this is what you will get from me at this point.)

The reason I asked about him blacking out-is I was wondering if there was at all a chance he was framed-I mean it is really far fetched-but the first time I read about it-the account seems so strange.

People have more to fear from white American dudes than they do from an illegal immigrant. I get why some people would make this an immigration issue though. I'm not referring to you, I don't think you've done that.

Based only on the little we know now, I think it's most likely that Rivera claimed to have blacked out between catching Mollie and dumping her body because he doesn't want to cop to sexually assaulting her.

Killers of women and children often leave that part out of their confessions.

But, it's possible that Rivera is taking the fall for someone else or that his confession was coerced. It wouldn't be the first time.

The medical examiner's report may take a few weeks to complete. Hopefully, the ME will be able to determine if Mollie was sexually assaulted and how she was killed.

Also, it's possible that perpetrator DNA can be collected from her body if Mollie was sexually assaulted and/or if she fought back.

Rivera is expected to appear in court today. Maybe we'll learn a few more details.

Some More Details

Rivera was not known to police until Friday, when investigators traced him through his Chevy Malibu which was filmed following Mollie as she went on her evening jog on July 18.

The footage came from security cameras at a private citizen's home which police spent days analyzing before finally linking the vehicle to its owner.

Rivera had no immediate link to Mollie but his ex-girlfriend Iris Monarrez (pictured above with Rivera and their daughter) was friends with her on Facebook and he told police after he was arrested that he had seen Mollie jogging before.

Monarrez reportedly left him when he was arrested.  She hasn't made any public comments, but gotta think LE is very anxious to talk to her, if they haven't already.

As Tammy mentioned upthread, Rivera had worked on a farm for the last four years and lived in a house owned by his bosses.  He passed (e-verify) background checks and was a worker 'in good standing', his bosses said.

He won't be making that fatal fashion faux-pas again, I bet. No belts in jail and the judge set his bond at $5,000,000 cash only at today's hearing.  No way Rivera's going anywhere anytime soon, if ever.

And, hey, at least he didn't pair THAT belt with THOSE red skinny jeans, which might have been enough to prompt the state of Iowa to re-instate the death penalty.  ')

???  One's 'true' identity is always correct.

Do you mean you wonder if Rivera had a fake ID or has  been working in the U.S. using a fake SS# or something to that effect?

That's possible. But, his whole family has been in the U.S. since he was a child and his attorney says he's here legally despite LE's characterization of him as 'illegal'.  We'll find out for sure soon enough.

Rivera's parents, his ex, and their 3-year-old child were all at today's hearing.
