Mind you, better late than never I suppose. You may ask yourself how is one a homophobe and a closet homo at the same time? Simple. If you are a closet homo, you are in denial and so you live this life lie of not being into homosexuality. You take it a step further, as a sort of over-kill, and become homophobic in effect. You know, when someone has too much to prove, it is a red flag. Your first posts here were constantly trying to show how you don't want to suck up to "benders" (gays).
Anyway, back to your Government. All that matters, when comparing systems, is which system best puts the balance of power with the People.

I have no idea why he's so obsessed and I really wish he'd fuck off and crawl back under the fucking stone he came out from under.
IMHO, MF is in urgent need of therapy. the quicker he gets it the better it'll be for all of us.

Ant, they don't give a shit about People having the balance of power or being responsible for their own freedom and safety. They want Nanny-Gov to do everything for them. I'm disgusted. I'm angry. I might even sleep without a body pillow tonight ...

It's difficult to explain freedom to those who never had it. When you take away their free will to take care of themselves, they want the same for everyone.
Maybe it's because they feel gypped and think their misery should be spread to one and all? I don't know.
I do know that I like my freedom and it didn't come handed to me on a plate. I appreciate everything I have and even the things I dont' have.
I don't want some shit "spreading the wealth" to make things even. I have had money and I have lost money. I grew up dirt poor. I earned my own way and I don't like the idea of me getting someone's hard earned cash because I don't have any. I don't like my hard earned cash taken from me to give to someone who won't get off their ass and earn it. I know both sides of this spectrum. Socialism or "sharing wealth" only makes for lazy societies. They have no incentive to strive for more. Just enough is good enough for those who think this is the way.
I don't own an gun but I like to know that if I wanted to I can buy one. These anti gun nuts think that all of us are running around pointing guns at each other and killing one another off. I assure you we are not.
The laws of statistics will always give the skewed view that more Americans are dying because of guns than "over there". So I ignore that dumb argument.
It's like saying back ing 1945 there were less car fatalities than there are today. Well duh! of course because there are more people and cars today than then!
Take away the guns, the criminals will still get one. They'll make home made guns. They'll buy those fun cell phone guns from where? the UK.
They'll make them out of a chunk of wood, a hammer and some bullets.
They'll find other ways to kill each other too. It doesn't matter. People by nature are violent. Throw in a twisted mind and the abilty to gain a weapon and they'll kill.
Maybe these people should actually read our constitution before they shoot their mouth off telling us how to be free? It's really pretty easy to read and understand... give it a whirl.

A very well written post TA. Unfortunately your ideas of what constitutes freedom are somewhat skewed. I fully admit and agree with you that the UK government is guilty of acting like a nanny state at times and in a totally unnecessary way.
However, this is not only a UK problem and I know of several US state laws that could be viewed in the same light.
The utter stupidity of the law makers in the UK and the US leaves me astounded.
http://www.dumblaws.com/
When it comes to violent crime and in particular gun crime and gun related deaths, the UK is far less violent than the US and that has to be as a direct consequence of our laws. No matter how you want to look at it, the statistics speak for themselves.
At the risk of repeating myself, we have around 80 gun related deaths per year as opposed to the US having over 10,000 per year.. There has to be a reason why the US has 4 times the UK population, but many more times the proportion of population to gun related deaths. The figures speak for themselves and even a brainless moron could see it is due to the number of firearms in your society.

Personally I have never heard of a person being stabbed with a gun. There is a bit of a problem with that I think, stabbing and knife related crimes.

Even if 100% true, it has to do with culture, not inanimate objects.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any knife related death statistics for the US.
However, I suspect the total of Knife related deaths in the US will be much higher by proportion that they are in the UK. Perhaps the reason that US knife statistics are not easily found, is they are not considered as important as gun related deaths and are therefore less prevalent in your media reporting.
If you add the gun related and knife related deaths per year in the UK, they total around 280. This is still far far fewer than the US statistics for gun related deaths.
If as MF says it has more to do with the US culture, then this begs the question as to what is it about that culture that makes people want to kill each other so readily?
It also needs to be understood that it is far quicker, easier and more likely to kill someone with a gun, than it is with a knife.

Howard, you apparently don't quite understand that PART of the reason we have the Second Amendment and PART of why personal arms are a key element of freedom is because 80 million + armed and angry citizens, willing and able to defend their freedom from tyranny, are much harder to enslave through tyranny, and are a much more difficult force to reckon with should a tyrannical Government need to be overthrown. That is how America started - read the Declaration of Independence. It speaks specifically to how sometimes Governments need to be overthrown. That is why there are State Constitutions with the Right to Revolt. You imply that knives, pitchforks, and karate should be used. Your Nation was not born out of that appreciation for freedom and the defense of it. Your Nation had to have its ass kicked by those willing and able to defend freedom, so naturally you aren't on the same page. Long-term principles of freedom or protecting it for the long-term are not in your world view or culture. Your culture comes from being tyrannical through the bullshit of Royalty. So, you don't appreciate the historical context and what the history of freedom teaches us about a defenseless citizenry and the nature of Government, over the long run. There is a cost to freedom. People abuse and misuse things. Sometimes things get bad, like through culture. But it is the culture that needs to adjust, not the raping of our rights or abandoning the principles of freedom. The Founders warned us about that and how we need to keep a vigilant guard if the system is to work long-term.
So we accept that things don't go well all the time and that sometimes the cost is high, but we must always respect the principles of freedom. That is what stops us from having things like dictators, royalty, and a Queen with Lords and a gun ban.

Very well put MF.
Howard, where exactly did I explain what I think constitutes freedom? I reread my post and I certainly can't find it!
I also never said my views were against the UK solely. I said it's hard to explain what freedom means to people who've never had it. And I hold firm on that.
I also never said we are free from stupid laws but the beauty here vs anyone else is that we can and often do get stupid laws repealed. The people have a voice. A loud one should they choose.
I have personally been involved in getting laws enacted where I live and trust me, this is no easy task because I live in one of the most liberal states in our union. Trust me, I regret every minute I live here and the first chance I get where I can sell my house and leave I'm outta here. I will do my homework on the next place I live.
Regardless, your gun control cannot work here. Criminals will get guns no matter how illegal they are. It's indesputible. But the right to every American to have a gun should never be taken away from us.
We are many small countries united as one. Each with it's own constitution and one governing all. The people have the say. We have the right to challenge our leaders. We have the right to impeach the ones we think are not working for us. That is why we are made "Of the People, For the People and By the People".

Great posts both MF and TA.
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree about the reasons for US gun related deaths and what appears to be your more violent society.
Maybe it is the fact I was born in the UK and that's why I have such a hard time understanding some US culture and especially the gun culture you have.
I can only say I'm glad I don't live in the US.

I thought this was a discussion on freedom not guns? I thought guns were the smaller part of the argument?
You keep bringing the conversation back to guns ignoring the point of the freedom we live by to make the choice as to whether we want to keep a gun or not.
I guess when every move every citizen makes is watched by the government you have no choice but to argue on only one point you feel passionate about.
I for one am glad I was born here. I can go about my daily life without worry some government official is going to come knocking on my door to serve me a ticket for a traffic violation that was seen on a traffic camera a week ago. I can go from state to state FREELY without having to show proof of citizenship or travel papers. I can go into any store and purchase anything I want without being questioned what it's for. And best of all, I can question my government without fear of going to jail for it.
