I heard last night that both the hunting camps they broke into were owned by corrections officers.
How convenient, wonder if Matt & Sweat had to pay rent up front.

Move over Joyce Mitchell...
^ 29-year-old Kristopher McNeil pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon back in 2009.
McNeil was serving a 14-year sentence at Brown Creek Correctional Institution in Polkton, NC and was scheduled for release in 2018.
He escaped from the prison's minimum-security unit on Saturday and was captured yesterday walking down the road.
How did he manage to escape? It's believed he scaled a fence and had help from a special friend, Kendra Miller.
^ Kendra Miller worked at the prison kitchen and had developed a relationship with the inmate.
Miller is currently being held in Anson County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.
She has been charged with harboring a fugitive, aiding and abetting a fugitive, having sex with an inmate and providing a cell phone to an inmate.
McNeil faces three years added to his sentence.

I hope prison administrators across the country are prompted to start looking harder at their personnel management and security procedures as a result of the recent high-profile escapes.
It's maddening that killers are being released back into society with the help of dipshit Corrections employees.

It seems like they're becoming more frequent to me too. I hope escapes aren't back on the rise.
According to LE stats nationwide, the number of prison escapes has dropped sharply, from 100 inmates per 10,000 in the 1980s to one per 10,000. Maybe we're just hearing more about them these days due to increased media sources/coverage?
So, CNN is reporting now that Sweat is singing like a canary from his hospital bed. He's been upgraded from Critical condition to Serious condition and doing better.
Sweat told investigators that he ditched Matt, who was sick and drunk when he was killed, fives days ago because Matt was holding him back. It was a bunch of bullshit that LE had Sweat cornered right after they killed Matt, it seems. They were not together at the time.
He also told investigators that he and Matt had to improvise after Joyce Mitchell failed to show up with the getaway car as planned. She was supposed to drive them to Mexico (where Matt had fled years ago and subsequently spent years behind bars for killing a man).
Police will need to confirm whatever Sweat tells them, of course, but it's good that he's talking.

Not a problem.
It's interesting to hear what Sweat is telling the cops but again I'm disappointed the cops couldn't have just kept their mouths shut rather than say they were hot on Sweat's trail. That was bullshit and given they said it people had expectations. I would have preferred they said they didn't know where he was rather than embellish.

I'm curious to know if Matt was drunk when he was killed. I know it's irrelevant but I'm interested nonetheless.

I bet three slugs in the melon while you're drunk feels pretty cool.

Me too.
According to news reports, police sources indicated that Matt was sick and drunk when police located him Friday. Investigators said the finding of Matt's soiled underwear before they caught up with him indicated he was likely ill from consuming contaminated food or water.
One of the tips that led police to Matt was a resident reporting one of their cabins having been broken into, with empty bottles of booze laying out and officials said Matt's corpse reeked of alcohol.
Toxicology results are pending, but I bet he was wasted off his ass.

I think so too. If he was he must have believed there was no hope of getting anywhere, otherwise I think he would have wanted to keep his wits about him.

Here's the cabin the convicts were holed-up in; the place where the prison-issued boxer shorts and DNA were found.
Authorities were able to confirm that Matt and Sweat had been there within 24 hours of LE searching the cabin.
I wonder if Matt and Sweat had a police scanner, were tipped-off, or if they were just lucky enough to leave in time.

One dead, the other injured and apparently squealing like a stuck pig.
Heroin was apparently readily accessible at the institute (shocker!).
It was a mildly interesting drama for awhile. Now the squealer will take lots of people down with him...and hope he can trade that for a reasonably cushy spot at his next facility.

Lifting up the Rug at Clinton Correctional Facility
I'm glad the FBI is involved in the investigation and it's not being conducted solely by state or prison officials who hold some degree of responsibility for the prison management at Clinton Correctional.
Prisoner fraternization, violation of key security policies, possible heroin ring... There's probably more, IMO.
Officials say 12 more staffers at the prison have been put on administrative leave - including the prison's superintendent and his deputy in charge of security.
An official with knowledge of the move tells The Associated Press that Clinton Correctional Facility Superintendent Steven Racette and Deputy Superintendent Stephen Brown are among those on leave. The official wasn't authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision says it's part of the ongoing review of the June 6 escape by convicted murderers Richard Matt and David Sweat. The department didn't identify the suspended staff. Assistant Commissioner James O'Gorman will oversee the facility temporarily.

Holy shit!
I'm not defending the corrections officer who should have put the frozen meat through security, I want to be clear on that. I feel sorry for him. I don't think he is a bad person, I think he made a seriously sucky decision and it will cost him a lot.

Yeah, Palmer is lucky his bad decision didn't cost any LEOs or civilians their lives while Matt and Sweat were on the loose. He would likely have lost a whole lot more.
I think Joyce Mitchell will probably end up paying a higher price than Palmer because she intentionally helped the murderers escape, but Palmer's violation of policy was a huge one.

I thought about that the whole time they were running free. I cussed that dumb broad everyday and yet I'd look at Palmer and just sorta shake my head in disgust. I know he's guilty & he has to pay but my outrage is so much more for her, which is crazy given what he did or didn't do as the case may be.

I don't think that's crazy.
She had intent to help the murderers escape; he apparently did not.
I agree that her crimes were worse than his. But, they both deserve to be in deep shit.

Here's Matt...dead. He has 3 gunshots to the top of his head. How does one manage that kind of shot given it was said he was shot after failing to comply with orders to stop & put his hands up?
Also, when there is a massive manhunt going down how do you not look in tree stands in a place laden with hunting camps?

Obviously that picture was taken by a LEO. What the fuck is law enforcement doing selling pix to a rag or any media outlet for that matter?

Sweat's condition has been upgraded to "fair" and he's continuing to talk to investigators. Hopefully the info he provides can help Corrections' officials close some security gaps and breaches at Clinton and other prisons.
So far, it looks to me like the crux of the problem is prison workers being allowed to fraternize and conspire with with prisoners, while other prison workers had gotten comfortable with violating policies -- all without anyone in charge effectively monitoring the workers'/guards' performance or conduct (a huge systematic personnel and management failure). It'll be interesting to see if the investigation also uncovers problems in the property infrastructure and security breaches associated with visitors.
Snip:
Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie said Sweat and Matt had several close calls, including hearing the voices of people nearby when they were hiding in a hunting cabin.
Sweat also told police that after the two split up he hid in a tree stand used by hunters and saw a law enforcement officer walk right by him.
Sweat is giving more details to investigators about how the pair escaped from the prison.
Wylie confirmed that Sweat told police that he never used power tools, only a hacksaw blade to cut through steel cell block walls and steam pipes.
Sweat admitted he and Matt conducted a practice run of their prison break on June 5, the night before they escaped.
The men poked their heads out of a manhole, but decided it was too close to nearby homes. Instead, they exited the tunnel early the next morning through a slightly more isolated manhole located just a block from the prison walls.
