I was thinking of getting a biometric safe for my bedroom they go for around 200.00 and only need the right fingertip to open. I could keep my pistol safe and it would be quickly accessible when needed.
This one cost more but there are others that are cheaper.

I know we discussed it somewhere way upthread when Cutz was still commenting here (I really liked his posts), but fingerprint identification technology to unlock guns themselves is still really intriguing and attractive to me. Unfortunately, market execution of that technological concept doesn't seem to have gained much steam.
Having the trigger locked to anyone but the background-checked legal owner of the gun would resolve a lot of problems (kids using their parents' guns to shoot themselves and others, criminals stealing guns and using them to commit crimes...).
In the meantime, quick access to gun storage safes, via fingerprint ID, seems like a good way to go for responsible owners who want to be able to access secured guns as quickly as possible.

Gov Murphy of Jersey commuted the sentence of the shooter who should have been in jail, not on the streets. It turns out it was a gang fight that was the cause of this shooting. This falls squarely on the Governors shoulders by letting this guy out early.
And in 2010, while still in prison, Wells was sentenced to six additional years after pleading guilty to a second-degree racketeering charge. He reportedly helped a gang leader run the group from inside prison.
So despite two lengthy sentences that should have left Wells serving time behind bars into the 2020s, he was back on the streets and able to commit Sunday's crime.
Murphy has decried the sentencing and incarceration of people throughout his campaign and time in office as part of his criminal justice reform agenda, which includes a review of sentencing laws in the state.

Wasn't trying to get into the politics of the shooter being free, I was simply commenting on the fact that a mass shooting barely warranted a headline.

Apparently the demographic does not meet the narrative.

Cause and effect.
If there is one thing I've learned from HOTD it's to dbl check sources and to wait for the entire story to come out, not just the first soundbite from ANY source. In that I am gratefully thankful.

My cause and effect comment means that with every decision made it effects something good or bad that is why things sometimes have bad endings not intended. Or in some cases were intended.

Apparently, if you take guns out of the equation, people start using knives? Now where have I heard this column of thought before?... Hmmm...

5 Toddlers, 1 Week...
Three little kids shot themselves to death accidentally when they got a hold of their parents' guns. Two others shot themselves in the head and are in critical condition.
HOUSTON, TEXAS (2)
^ Christopher Williams Jr, 2 years old, lost his life after he found a 9mm pistol on the couch in the living room of his Houston home and accidentally shot himself. Rest in Peace.
Police believe the pistol belonged to Junior's father, Christopher Charles Williams. Both Williams Sr and his wife will be interviewed by the Houston Police Department's Special Victims Division to determine how Junior was able to access the gun. Both parents were home at the time of the shooting.
Authorities have not yet determined if either parent will be charged with failing to make a weapon inaccessible to a child. https://kenh789.com/news/article-5934739...ead.n.html
Today, the 4-year-old stepson of a Houston cop shot himself with a gun left accessible in the home. The little boy is in "very critical condition" and fighting for his life. I hope he makes it. And, I doubt his stepfather will face any charges. https://www.chron.com/neighborhood/cyfai...064668.php

CALIFORNIA
Another 2-year-old died Saturday after shooting himself in the head with a pistol. Police in Fresno, Calif. say two adults were at home with the child at the time of the incident, but neither was a parent. Police are investigating who the gun belongs to and how the child gained access to it. It wasn't yet clear whether anyone would be charged. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/3-children-...ationwide/
SOUTH CAROLINA
Another 4-year-old who accidentally shot himself in the head is in critical condition after an incident at a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina resort.
Officers in Myrtle Beach were called to Oceans One Resort on Ocean Boulevard South Saturday night. Officers found a child who had been shot in one of the rooms at the resort. According to detectives, the child was playing in the room unattended when he got ahold of a handgun and accidentally shot himself. The handgun was in the purse of the child's mother.
Officers say the parents were in another room of the hotel suite while the child shot himself. The shooting has been ruled accidental. Detectives have charged the parents, Heather Odom, 30, and Jeremy Barrett, 34, with unlawful neglect of a child.
GEORGIA
Authorities in Georgia say another 4-year-old boy shot and killed himself Saturday morning in another apparent accident. Richmond County Chief Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose Sr. tells newns outlets that Justin Foss Jr. was pronounced dead Saturday morning. Once again............the child apparently found the gun in a couch while he was at home.
Across the country, about 1,300 children die each year from firearm-related injuries, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/3-children-...ationwide/
Effin' assholes need to secure their 'weapons' or 'tools' or whatever one wants to call them. And don't leave loaded guns hidden around the house, as if that would keep them away from little kids who just so happen to love exploring every nook and cranny.
All of the adult gun owners in these cases should be charged with neglect or a gun charge, as far as I'm concerned.

I would guess 75% of children that die from accidents are hispanic.

My nephew, his wife, and my 2 1⁄2 year-old grand nephew visited this weekend.
We watched the premiere episode of Sacha Barren Cohen's new SHOWTIME series, "Who is America?" and really enjoyed it. But, it was generally more disturbing than funny to us.
In one piece, Cohen posed as a former Israeli intelligence officer lobbying for a U.S. program to arm pre-schoolers and kindergartners.
Not only did he get enthusiastic support from national gun rights advocate and president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, Philip Van Cleave, he got several Republican congresspersons to endorse the "Kinder Guardians" program.
Here's the promotional video for the Kinder Guardians program, starring Van Cleave.

New National Gun Safety Ad Campaign: Safe Storage
I hope this effort, launched today, has a measurable impact.
The date the outreach is beginning, the eighth day of the eighth month of the year, is a nod to a number central to the campaign: Eight children from infants to 19 years old are unintentionally killed or injured by a gun each day, according to the coalition’s analysis of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.
The Ad Council, a nonprofit that popularized some of America’s most recognizable public service campaigns and slogans, including “friends don’t let friends drive drunk” and “only you can prevent forest fires,” is teaming up with the Brady Center gun control group to raise awareness of what both describe as a crisis: unintentional deaths or injuries to children caused by guns.
The new campaign, “End Family Fire,” aims to educate the public on the importance of safe firearm storage. “Family fire,” a phrase created for the campaign, refers to shootings that cause injury or death and involve improperly stored or misused guns found in the home.

As with the Ad Council’s other campaigns, “End Family Fire” will rely on space donated by online, print and broadcast media. Those that have donated services so far include Fox Networks Group, the Meredith Corporation and Condé Nast.
The advertisements will start appearing this week on television, in print, on outdoor signage and online. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/08/busin...icle-click
In its early years, the NRA would have been quick to endorse such an effort. However, they did not participate in this one and have made no public statements about it. Other gun advocacy groups have reportedly participated in the program development and provided support however.
This effort involves no real or perceived threat to gun owners' rights, won't be a taxpayer expense, and is not proposing new laws. There's no rational reason for anyone to oppose it, from my perspective.

Hey HOTD, I see something in the math here: In post 4133 you stated 1300 kids die every year from "Accidental" shootings, but then in 4137 it states 8 a day. Holy shit. One is too many, but I am wondering where the numbers come from. 1300 a year is ~3.5, 8 a day is 2900.
Where do the numbers come from?

Hey Six.
The two stats are from the same source, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention study. But, they cover different subject groups and context.
The new safety ad campaign covered in post 4137 notes that 8 children are unintentionally killed or injured each day, specifically with guns found in the home only ('Family Fire'). Not all of those children die.
The statistic from the CBS article in post 4133 covers child firearm deaths only (not injuries). That number includes (but is not limited to) unintentional child deaths caused by family guns in the home.
