Group File Copying, Encounters a "Problem"
Windows:
File 237 of 388 is corrupted and cannot be copied. What do we do? We crap out right there and dump you. And we don't even TELL you which file exactly it is that was the problem. In fact, FUCK YOU, you batch copy bastard.
Linux:
Same issue. What do we do? We give you a dialogue box prompt that says: "File Xavier.gif is damaged and cannot be copied, would you like to continue with the next file?" And when you answer YES we listen and finish the rest of the batch. We love you Mr. Batch Copy Guy. And since we told you what file had an issue you know which one to attempt to fix by replacing with a backup or something. We REALLY love you. Come again!
EDIT: Yes, there are 3rd party copy programs for Winbows that work this way. But, that's just it, THIRD PARTY. Linux has this functionality as a BUILT IN STANDARD! I've been looking for one of those 3rd party programs... I HATE that frigging bug. ::bang:: You have one. It's called Mandriva Linux One. It's in the box of discs I sent you.

Exactly. The "One" is the LiveCD version of it, so you don't install or mess up your windows or anything. You just use it as a utils CD like you already do with UBCD & Such. Dipwit
Linux strikes again!
Ok, I've only just recently installed Linux on this laptop, making it dual-boot with XP (Which, by the way, XP was a NIGHTMARE to install as a downgrade from Vista due to driver issues, which are a bitch & a half). I encountered one problem. Just one. My sound didn't work. I have a High Def Audio card from Intel in this laptop. So, I go to Mandriva's forums, find out many other people had the same problem. I was referred to their bug tracker, where I learned the problem was originally reported on 10/13/2008. And a fix was released on 11/17/2008. That's one month, 4 days. Windows couldn't touch that in their wettest dreams. Obviously everyone makes mistakes, but the fewer they make & the faster they fix those they DO make is what truly shows the quality. And to think, this is on a FREE OS. No one pays these guys. Anyways, since the next major release (I have 2009.0), which is 2009.1, is due out very soon, I decided to forgo the fix & actually put off configuring this system for Linux until it is released.
FYI: Mandriva has 2 major releases per year, in the format of XXXX.0 & XXXX.1, where XXXX is the year. These are also known as XXXX and XXXX Spring.

Am I wrong in thinking the only way to acquire this virus is by downloading "stuff" or is it possible to get it just by normal surfing of the internet.
Duchess Wrote:Am I wrong in thinking the only way to acquire this virus is by downloading "stuff" or is it possible to get it just by normal surfing of the internet. Yes you can get it from normal surfing. For a long time while IE 5.5 was the most prominent browser, there was a security flaw with ActiveX that allowed it to download and infect your computer without asking permission of the user for the ActiveX control in the first place. If any similar security flaw has been found in a newer browser, then it is quite possible you can be infected just by browsing. This is why I prefer Firefox, thus far it's track record re: security has been the best of all the browsers out there. With Opera being very close behind.
EDIT:
I forgot to mention that you can get viruses in general from almost any source. Internet, E-Mail, CD-ROM, Floppy Disk, USB Flash Drives, SD/xD/Other Flash Memory Devices, and even Digital Camera or Cellphone internal memory devices (like mini hard drives), or the hard drives from iPods & other MP3 players and such devices. Computing is a dangerous thing. Over 300,000 computers have proxy software that was installed via trojan horse that allows hackers to reroute their attacks to look like they're coming from that computer instead.

Well, Jesus Christ...How does one stay safe...My last laptop was loaded with security & it was one slooooooooow bitch...I deal with a dial up connection to begin with so, as you can imagine I am not moving at the speed of light here.
Duchess Wrote:Well, Jesus Christ...How does one stay safe...My last laptop was loaded with security & it was one slooooooooow bitch...I deal with a dial up connection to begin with so, as you can imagine I am not moving at the speed of light here. Stay safe? Well, the first part of that answer is to make sure you have QUALITY security software. Which means no Norton (Symantec), McAffee, or any of the others you find on the shelves at your local stores like Walmart. I used to be quite the fan of Kaspersky, and while they're still good, it as well is becoming... well, a corporate monster. The big problem with these big name companies IS their success. Because the get into that coporate mindset, and it ruins them. SyberBitch and I had this discussion on YahooIM recently. I also use ClamAV (Which is for Linux, but they have a windows port called ClamWin) which is not only free, but Enterprise strength. For those who don't know what that means, it simply means it is designed to function in a high stress, high uptime required business network. The downside to Clam is that it is somewhat large and cumbersome for a personal computer. Like using a sledge hammer on the doorknob when you just have to turn it to open the door.
The next step is to be vary careful with your external devices and media. Make sure you trust your sources.
As always, be careful on the internet as well. Don't open suspicious emails, nor download suspicious attachments. And stay away from those dumb fucking chain emails!!! Especially the ones with pics. My Mom can't seem to understand that one and gets infected 5-8 times a year because of it.
Finally, just use your head. Common sense goes a long way, just like in any other aspect of life. And do your own research as well. Search for browser security reviews and stuff before choosing a browser, though I've made my preferences clear.

As D said, you want to stay away from McAffee and Norton. They are overpriced, overblown resource hogs that are more liable to screw up your computer than 'safeguard' it. I've removed nasty viruses from computers with those packages on them.
Ironically, when it comes to security software, 'less is more'. One of the WORST things you can do (aside from going online 'naked' - meaning without antivirus protection) is to try and use TOO MUCH protection. You should only have ONE decent antivirus/antispyware program. I like to use Free AVG in combination with Spybot S&D. If you want another layer of protection, you can install a firewall, like BlackIce Defender, but that's usually more than the average person will need.
If you have installed several different antivirus/antispyware programs, not only does it bog your computer down, but many of those programs actually contain viruses and spyware themselves.
As for Conficker, it isn't so much simply being online that puts you in jeopardy for that worm. Conficker will install itself in your computer from infected websites (ie - infected computers that are hosting the websites). You will not know you have been infected until you start having problems. There is also a 'copycat' virus going around (forgot the name of it), but it's travelling by more traditional means, such as email attachments and infected downloads.
I strongly suspect that the link previously posted to 'check for conficker' in THIS thread, leads to an infected website. I began having issues with my computer the same day I went to that site, after rebooting, causing me to have to do a cleanup operation.
***DO NOT*** visit links unless you are certain that they are safe (and sometimes that doesn't even help
It's also important, as D said, to NEVER open those 'forward' chain-letter emails or suspicious looking emails. Never download attachments that you are not specifically expecting (not even from people you trust - contact them first to be sure they MEANT to send you an attachment, since viruses can take control of their address books and send emails without their knowledge) and NEVER use email links to 'log in' to websites. Alway browse to the website directly instead of clicking on a link in an email.
Oh, and ALWAYS do periodic backups of important files (to something other than your hard drive)... because even with those precautions in place, you never know when you may be hit by a nasty virus or when you may suffer hardware/software failure. It sucks to lose important data!!
