PASADENA ( KTLA) -- Authorities say a 3-year-old boy who was lost by his drunk father and found strapped into his car seat about 25 hours later in Pasadena has been placed in protective custody.
Dylan Kurihara was found late Sunday night in a parking structure in the area of Madison Avenue and Green Street, just blocks away from where he was lost, according to the Pasadena Police Department.
Rowdy Metzger, a Pasadena resident, saw and recognized the boy inside his father's missing silver 2001 Lexus four-door sedan and called authorities, said Pasadena Chief of Police Phillip L. Sanchez.
Metzger told KTLA that he has a 3-year-old himself and wanted to help.
"I think it's a parent's worst nightmare that something is going to happen to your child and no one is going to know where they're at," Metzger said.
Metzger says he was walking past an open parking structure, saw the father's SUV and spotted the boy sleeping inside.
"I tapped on the window, it woke him up. The door was open. I opened it. He got a little scared. I called out his name. I told him it was going to be okay," Metzger told KTLA.
"I kept giving a thumb's up signal because I didn't know if he would understand me, if he was in shock or whatever. I called 911. I just talking to him until the police came," he added.
The boy was a little dehydrated and covered in urine, but otherwise in good condition.
He was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital for evaluation and was later placed into protective custody, police said.
The boy's grandmother, Marie Garcia, who had pleaded for Dylan's safe return when his fate was uncertain Sunday, told KTLA how relieved she was to know her grandson was safe.
"We would love to thank everybody. God bless everybody! We thank the police and the dogs they've trained. We just thank God and that they found him well and safe," Garcia said.
Dylan Kurihara and his father, 23-year-old Joe Kurihara, were last seen leaving a parking structure at Cordova Ave and Euclid St. in Pasadenaaround 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
They had attended a wedding party at a Masonic Lodge along with the boy's mother.
Dylan's father Joe was arrested an hour later while walking alone in the area of E. Cordova St.
When police arrested Cordova, they were unaware that he was in charge of a child and Kurihara reportedly told police he did not remember being with Dylan because he was too drunk.
Police were made aware of the missing child when his mother woke up at 8:00 a.m. Sunday, discovered him missing and called police.
Joe Kurihara was being held on $10,000 bail on suspicion of felony child endangerment.
