Actually, the only reason we still teach/use fractions is in regards to our system of measurement. If we would have gone metric in the 70s (I understand why we didn't), we would not have to teach/learn fractions today.

Is your daughter in 5th or 6th grade?

Computing that type of problem is not useful at all, unless one is a carpenter. Tell, how often in life have you personally, since becoming an adult, had to solve such a problem....and better yet, can you tell me the answer?
