I liked the trying. One is not forced to utilize the various credits and deductions provided by the tax code.

I remember when Bush wanted to return the surplus to the people, in the form of a $600 check, to all tax filers. The Democrats were outraged and staged a photo-op on the Capital steps decrying this fiscal irresponsibility.

I suggested to an associate (heavily involved in Gore's presidential run and a Casino lobbyist) that the Democratic representatives stage another photo-op, with checks in hand, and donate the money to various charities or community organizations. My rationale: It's hard to argue against a position when someone "walks the talk".

He laughed and said it would be a cold day in hell before that would happen.

I guess it's still true, today.
