I got a regular job at 16 and before that I cleaned houses and babysat. When I was even younger, my dad would give me a nickel to shine his shoes. Other than that, we were unpaid slaves. My parents didn't even call them "chores". It was just "go sweep the porch" or "wash the dishes" which we did every night.
Kids are just spoiled. We've placed such a high priority on academic success (and everything that goes with that...sports, scholarships, community service etc.) that many of us have lost touch with just having them take care of shit around the house. I've had to shift my expectations in that regard (academics). I heard recently that it takes a 4.2 GPA to get in to most UC colleges in California not to mention all the extras. My kids are smart but I don't see them graduating high school with a 4.2 GPA (and the woman who told me this said she knew of a girl with a 4.3 that was denied). Fuck that. I'm easing up in that regard and going to focus on just having them be responsible and productive.
