The State and IRS can freeze and garnish your bank account for back taxes, penalties and interest at any time and the bank does not have to notify you about it. My accountant died of cancer and he forgot to electronically file our 2011 form 941. I had no idea until they just started sending me letters about it recently saying I owe $1000 in penalties, I had to take the notices to my new accountant to try to figure out what they were charging me for. This last notice they sent did say they will garnish it from our bank account.
