This thread likely stemmed from one or more of the possibilities below:

1) He was showing courage by dipping his toe into the Pool Of Evil.

2) He is seeing if his Divine Power can cast a light upon our darkness, and was willing to take "risks" in order to perhaps save at least one soul.

3) He was seeing if his Divine Power imparts a protection from Evil upon him, and this was to be a convenient test of that power.

4) He was seeking a thrill by prodding the evil beast.
