The victim, Ashley Hasti, was described as extremely smart by her family and by her medical professor, based on what she did with her knowledge. I have no basis or motivation to question their perceptions.
As for the killer, he was very well-educated. I don't know if he was also of superior intellect, but it wouldn't surprise me either way. It doesn't really matter to me; he was a homicidal madman regardless of his comparative intellect.
