Back then the kids could smoke in what they called an open area that was just a section of grass surrounded by classrooms in the center of the school. We all wore bell bottoms and would draw chalk murals on the brick walls in the open area. I drew a big zig-zag guy that was all the rage for a while.

One of the high school's I went to had a smoking area like that. Northeast Regional.
Wish I could have stayed at that school. Probably should have behaved better for the Aunt I was living with at the time.
