You know, she might've gotten into nursing to HELP people. Management level is often filled with clerical/administrative duties that take you out of the front line. What job satisfaction would that hold other than a higher salary?

There are other things than just a higher salary, ranging from more saved for retirement to thinking beyond just the immediate management position. If one is happy not trying to excel and just wants to help people, then don't complain when you are at a level where someone riding with their boyfriend on a bike means you will be helping those people on July 4^th.
