How did it's defeat prevent the Biden admin from controlling entry into the US?
Asking for a friend.
Have ur friend google the executive order that Biden finally signed a few months ago vs the bi-partisan legislation that wasn’t passed because of Trump. I haven’t done that yet. Biden’s EA has definitely significantly slowed border crossings but my understanding of the bill that was quashed was that it included funds to increase border patrol, extend the border wall, perhaps provide money and/or more judges to try to clear the backlog of those with temporary status AND cap the number of crossings (and more). So Biden’s EA accomplished something but it wasn’t as comprehensive (I believe). I also believe that bi-partisan legislation is generally a good thing and that the government wasn’t meant to run on the stroke of one person’s pen. It seems like every time a new president takes office, it’s a game of penmanship. Signing new EA’s changing or undoing prior EAs. We have a legislative branch for a reason. They need to do their fucking jobs.
My understanding is that under Biden, aliens have been allowed entry prior to being processed. If that's the case, a new EA is irrelevant. At any point in time Biden could have instructed Mayorkas to aggressively enforce the laws that are already on the books.
Well my understanding is a big part of the problem has been those entering through illegal channels; not crossing or coming in at border control points of entry. I’ve also heard that some people are given some temporary status but the system is so wildly backed up that they can be here for months if not years before they ever even have their case heard. I also understand that border control is hugely understaffed as is the system for processing requests. It’s all fucked up for sure and has been through many administrations with upticks and decreases in the number of crossings over the years. They’re down right now based on Biden’s EA but the system is far from fixed. Just ordering Mayorkas to enforce laws is somewhat meaningless if he doesn’t have the resources to do that. Trump wanted to run on illegal immigration and he is and he prevented a solid piece of legislation from coming up for a vote for his own selfish interests. If u recall, the very conservative Republicans who helped draft that “biggest immigration reform bill in decades” were pissed when Trump squashed it. Until they quickly weren’t and got in line with the campaign. I think it’s bullshit.
That doesn't address allowing aliens to enter before being processed, nor does it explain why Biden waited until recently to sign the EA you referenced.
I'm not assuming that Trump cares about this beyond his ability to leverage it for political gain, so I don't care what he did or didn't do. I'm interested in why Biden made the problem worse.
As far as people coming in before being processed I think/thought that they’re basically assigned a case number (again the “temporary status I referenced before) so they were a little bit processed, lol.
Biden should have acted sooner during the huge influx in his first couple years. But Trump shouldn’t have squashed the bill and Biden isn’t the candidate anymore.
