___________________________________________ Toledo Free Press June 19th 2013 UPDATE: Neighbor adds new clue to missing toddler case Written by Evan Brune Casey Harper | | [email protected] The mother of missing 18-month-old Elaina Steinfurth was seen leaving between midnight and 1 a.m. the morning of the toddler’s disappearance. Dennis Bolfa, who lives across from the East Toledo home in the 700 block of Federal Street where the toddler was last seen, said he saw Elaina’s mother, Angela Steinfurth, and her boyfriend Steven W. King leave in their van and return 10-15 minutes later. On June 12, police seized the van Bolfa saw the couple leaving in. “I thought they were just going to get cigarettes or something,” he said. “It didn’t dawn on me at the time.” When Bolfa was interviewed by Toledo Free Press on June 18, he had not yet reported this information to the FBI or police. Bolfa said he believes Angela was involved in the disappearance. “A couple days before, she said, ‘[Elaina’s father Terry Steinfurth Jr.] ain’t getting my kid,’” Bolfa said. “She’s got something to do with it, no doubt.” Elaina was reported missing on the afternoon of June 2, just hours after Bolfa saw the van leave the home. No one besides King and Angela have reported seeing the child since June 2. Steinfurth Jr. came to pick up his daughter between noon and 1 p.m. at the King home on Federal Street. An argument ensued when Angela refused to give him Elaina, according to several witnesses. “They woke me up with their arguing between noon and 1 p.m. I had been taking a nap,” Bolfa said. “They were yelling back and forth, and [Steinfurth Jr.] kept saying, ‘I want my kid! I want my kid!’” Almost an hour after the start of the argument, Angela went in to get Elaina but came out “crying and screaming” that Elaina was gone, according to Terry Steinfurth Sr. The family began searching the area for Elaina. They called the police when she could not be found. Bolfa said “something wasn’t right” about Angela’s initial reaction. “She was pacing up and down the street, and then she walked up to me and asked for a cigarette. She went from crying to smiling. How do you go from fake crying to a smile?” he said. “Something ain’t right there. If I lost my kid, I wouldn’t be asking for a cigarette. That’s a crock of sh*t. If it was my kid, I’d be going crazy.” Angela is detained on child endangerment charges. Her bond has been set at $250,000. Police are searching for the missing toddler along with volunteer groups. Toledo Police and the FBI are offering a reward of $10,000 for information leading to her whereabouts. Allegations of abuse According to multiple witnesses in the Federal Street neighborhood where the toddler was last seen, mother Angela verbally abused Elaina as well as physically abused her 4-year-old daughter. “She would slap the oldest in the face, tore her hair,” said Julie King, mother of Angela’s boyfriend Steven. “She was rough, very rough. She would yank her up by the arm.” Julie Malkin, public information officer of Lucas County Children Services, said that children services responded to a call regarding Angela and Steinfurth Jr. earlier this spring. “We investigated a situation where we were concerned about the children being exposed to domestic violence,” Malkin said. “In this case, the worker felt that the situation had resolved itself.” Angel Zam, a family friend, said she heard Angela screaming at Elaina. “I’ve seen her be abusive, have heard her scream [to Elaina], ‘You little bastard!’ You know, stuff you just don’t say,’ she said. “She was really abusive to the kids. She had a lot of issues. I felt sorry for her.” Zak Zam, Angel’s son, said he witnessed similar incidents. “She just seemed very violent toward the [4-year-old daughter]. Slapped her across the face, said, ‘You little b*tch.’ Those are some of the worse things that I’ve seen,” he said. Ginger Smith, Elaina's cousin, assists volunteers by offering food and drink to search parties. Ginger Smith, Elaina’s cousin, has helped raise awareness and lead the volunteer search effort. “I know the mother wasn’t a very nice mother. She yelled at them and was always cussing,” she said. Angela’s treatment of the two girls was the final straw in Steinfurth Jr.’s decision to end his relationship with her, according to Steinfurth Sr. “I have seen her smack, yell, scream at [the 4-year-old]. I flat out told her I don’t agree with it. I was very happy when [Steinfurth Jr.] said he was going to try to take custody,” Steinfurth Sr. said. Angel said Angela would leave Elaina alone for hours at a time. “That baby was in the playpen for 20 out of 24 hours. I feel so bad because I didn’t do anything. I feel ashamed,” she said. Julie said she wanted Steinfurth Jr. to take custody of the two girls. “I said to T.J., ‘You gotta do something,’” Julie said. “’I’ll help you but something’s gotta be done. I’ll do anything to help you.’” Julie said she had considered calling Lucas County Children Services, but hesitated. “I didn’t want to see the kids go through the system, you know?” she said. Angela had previously lived with Julie for a few months, and Julie said that time together “made me hate my house.” She also said Angela regularly smoked marijuana. “She’d do it a few times a day, if she could afford it. She’d go to people’s houses,” Julie said. Federal Street residents said they see news crews almost daily with the story reaching a national audience. Nearby residents have experienced house searches and police questioning. “I think it’s an inside job on the mom, if you ask me,” Federal Street resident Terry Luce said. “She’s all happy and smiling. That mom messed the baby up.” Smith, who assists volunteers by offering food and drink to search parties, said the main focus is finding Elaina. “We ain’t here to worry about [Angela Steinfurth and Steven King],” Smith said. “We just want to find the baby. We just want to know where the baby’s at. That’s the main focus.” Follow toledofreepress.com for more on this developing story. Tags: Angela Steinfurth, Dennis Bolfa, Elaina Steinfurth, Steven W. Thanks for that NightOwl.
Seems like there's tons of compelling evidence to convict Angela of child endangerment/abuse. I'm so curious as to whether the cadaver dog that was involved in the search of the vacant home (from which the GMC Safari was towed into evidence) actually hit on the van. The media reports don't say one way or the other. Now that we know Angela and Steven left the house in that van the night before Elaina's alleged disappearance (at least according to the witness), gotta wonder if they took the baby somewhere then. How many frickin' people were in the King house ofter the course of 24 hours? Sounds like there were more than just Julie, Steven, Angela, Julie's husband and the 2 kids. Do you know if it was kinda like a flophouse? Thanks!! P.s. weird about the connection to the Straub/Clarke case.

According to Frank a friend of Angela & Terry Steinfurth, Angela wanted to apologize to Julie King apparently she was trying to also patch up things with Julie King's son Steven, so Angela was insistent on taking her precious children to this hell hole of a house.
_____________________________________________________________ Taken from www.Northwestohio.com EAST TOLEDO -- Some of those closest to the mother of a missing East Toledo toddler, 18-month-old Elaina Steinfurth, say the child's disappearance could have been avoided. Elaina's father, Terry Steinfurth Junior, has said he only gave his two children to his estranged wife, Angela, because he needed to work and she'd promised to care for the them at her step-father's home. Angela's step-father, Richard Schiewe, and Angela's half sister, Mary Schiewe, have confirmed that story adding that Angela made a last minute decision to stay at the Federal Street home where her ex-boyfriend, Steven King, was staying. Angela's former neighbor, who still only wants to be identified as Frank, added that even he offered her a place to stay be she refused. "She wanted to make her relationship with her boyfriend work and so she told me...she was going to apologize to the boyfriend's mother for some of the things that she said to her...that way she would have a room for her and her children's head," Frank told WNWO exclusively. Frank is the same source that released exclusive surveillance video to WNWO of baby Elaina and her mother, outside his East Toledo home, the day before the 18-month was last seen. Frank adds that Angela Steinfurth felt she had to apologize to Julie King, Steven King's mother and owner of the home where Elaina was last seen, because the two had argued enough that Angela would leave the home for nearly a month. WNWO does a good job with investigative reporting!

This is getting so ugly.
TJ and Angela's stepdad went at in front of the courthouse today. Saw the video clip. TJ threatened to get a restraining order and Angela's stepdad said something about TJ always having restraining orders for terrorist activity? Neighbor Frank is back on JVM wanting to know why Julie King isn't being charged for failure to report abuse; he says he never saw any abuse by Angela or TJ. Julie King says her son Steven King is getting death threats, but he only left out the back door because she told him to do so after the baby went missing; says they went out together to check if Elaina got out and went for the backyard pool or garage - says they were only gone for about 30 minute. Police are saying neither Julie or Steven King are suspects (of course, that could always change). Bunch of messed up adults, imo. Where the hell is Elaina?

Did anyone see Nancy Grace last night? She had an interview with Steven King's cousin. That interview was so confusing to me. It's like none of these stories add up....

It's like none of these stories add up.... I saw the clip on line and WNWO has the story you can read over it, Steven King Jr has his female cousin now coming out to explain things on his behalf, what a muddle it is turning out to be! The pair of them Angela and Steven go on shopping trips and the child was allegedly left in the care of a friend of King's brother. Who is this friend? male or female? www.NorthwestOhio.com The ex-boyfriend's story revealed: What he says happened to Baby Elaina by Angi Gonzalez Posted: 06.21.2013 at 12:50 AM on the HLN network, Steven King's cousin gave his account of the day 18-month-old Elaina Steinfurth last was seen, June 2nd. King, the ex-boyfriend of Elaina's mother, Angela Steinfurth, has remained out of the public eye for nearly a week after receiving death threats. While King has remained in constant contact with authorities, who insist he is not a suspect, there are still people who believe he had some involvement in the child's disappearance. His cousin, Christie Edmonds, spoke on his behalf on Thursday night and told Nancy Grace that June 2nd started like any other. "[Elaina] was playing with her toys and things. She got tired and [Angela and Steven] laid her down for a nap. Steven placed [Elaina] on the bed. Angela changed her diaper and gave her a cup. They left the house and went to a store," Edmonds said. King's cousin says they went to an East Toledo convenience store, called Universal, to get cigarettes and then returned to the Federal Street home where they were staying. Edmonds says that pair left again, at some point, to shop at a Dollar General store but returned a short time later. Both times the couple left, the child was allegedly in the care of a friend to King's brother. After the couple returned for a second time, King told Edmonds that Angela went in to check on the baby several times. While not inside the home, Angela was allegedly watching some older children in the yard and smoking cigarettes. In the early afternoon, King told Edmonds that Angela's estranged husband arrived to pick up the couple's two children, including Elaina. Several witnesses say that's when Angela initially refused to hand the toddler over. King says it wasn't until Elaina's father, Terry "TJ" Steinfurth Junior, came back for Elaina a second time that he learned the child was missing. Edmonds also said that her cousin, Steven King, did not see the toddler with a black eye or bloody nose. Numerous sources have come forward, in the last week, to say Angela told them Elaina had a black eye, bump on the head and bloody nostril the morning she disappeared. It was Angela's alleged corroboration of that story that lead Toledo Police to arrest her for child endangerment. Authorities say that Angela knew about the Elaina injuries and neglected to get her medical treatment. Edmonds went on to tell Nancy Grace that she was deeply disturbed by a comment Angela made to her before being taken into custody. "[Angela] said 'I just didn’t have enough time with Elaina. I just didn’t have enough time with her'... As soon as she said it my stomach went in my throat because I didn’t think it was a comment you would make if you thought your baby was coming home," Edmonds said.

I hate seeing parents physically whaling on kids especially little kids, I think if you can't control a toddler without hitting them you shouldn't have kids because you clearly don't have the patience that should be mandatory for a parent.

I don't think I can believe Steven's side of the story. Every adult living in that home seems to be pretty unresponsible. All thoes adults in the house sitting around in deplorable conditions. They had to be on drugs or something. People need to start telling the truth and the cops need to put more pressure on everyone in that house. I really hope they find Elaina...

Messed up people and pig stye of a space (thanks for vid clip). Aside from TJ and his father, won't be surprised if some of the adults that we've heard from so far have some kind of involvement or knowledge regarding what happened to Elaina. Pisses me off that Angela is sitting in jail, knowing a lot more than she's saying, while the community and LE searches for her baby. Had hoped she'd crack quickly.

Jeremy Baumhower is a reporter with The Toledo Free Press he has a facebook page and he began a Find Baby Elaina page, everyone in Toledo TV networks, radio stations, newspapers etc., are doing everything to help find the little baby girl. Thank-you!
_____________________________________________________________ Here is story Baumhower will have in this issue of The Free Press. MEDIA WATCH Baumhower: Media circus comes to Toledo Written by Jeremy Baumhower | | [email protected] If you look on the East Side of Toledo, you may have noticed a huge red striped tent, with a national spot-light — featuring a “tot-loving” circus barker, shirt-removing boyfriends, baby-mama drama and a man speaking with a voice box. No, it’s not Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey, but rather Nancy Grace and her HLN circus. It seems the big top has come to T-Town, all in hopes of finding a beautiful baby girl named Elaina. In what may be the scariest plot twist yet in the case of the missing 18-month-old, Grace has deemed the East Side made-for-tv drama worthy of her show’s attention. This story is so rich in material, it feels like a special crossover episode of “CSI: Toledo” with special guest Maury Povich. I could write the promotional announcements myself. From the producers of “Law & Order: SVU,” “Toddlers & Tiaras” and “The Jerry Springer Show,” comes “The Search for Elaina”, hosted by HLN’s Nancy Grace. And why not? This story’s evolving into an almost perfectly scripted primetime show with a plot of what happened to baby Elaina? Was she kidnapped and possibly harmed, or is she being hidden in a custody dispute gone horribly wrong? There seems way too many questions instead of answers, which is always a perfect formula for good television. This tragic whodunit storyline features characters only a new-aged Mark Twain could ever imagine. The real-life cast includes Elaina, a beautiful 18-month-old girl who is gone missing; Elaina’s mother Angela, now arrested and a suspect; Terry Jr., the baby daddy/estranged husband; Steven W. King, Angela’s boyfriend who was the last known party with the missing toddler and whose family Angela was staying with; Angela’s stepdad who uses a voice box to communicate; baby dad’s dad, Terry Sr. and hundreds more. Could you imagine being a producer for HLN and trying to create a graph of the family tree for viewers to follow at home? You combine all of the above mentioned “color” and you can see why Grace and her show have latched onto this story with two hands. Her 8 p.m. nightly telecast is consistently ranked second against other cable news networks, averaging close to 500,000 viewers a night. There is no coincidence that just hours after Elaina’s story debuted on Grace’s show last Wednesday night, police arrested the mother. I will admit, when I first saw the missing child poster on Facebook the Monday morning following Elaina’s disappearance, I called the number listed and verified that it was legitimate. I was curious as to why there wasn’t an Amber Alert issued that night, and I became increasing concerned for her Elaina’s well-being. After I saw various local TV interviews of Angela later that night, I was perplexed. Her answers, behavior and demeanor were out of place for a mother with a missing baby. I don’t know how any parent in her exact situation could give TV interviews and be so public. The verbiage Angela used when speaking to the media was alarming. “ I just want my daughter back in one piece” was said over and over again. I do not know what I would say if I was faced with a missing child, but I am positive it would not include scenarios of my child’s death or dismemberment. The biggest red flag during this whole scenario is how the mother acted just hours after her baby disappeared. Elaina’s disappearance is tragic on so many levels. First, an 18-month-old baby girl is missing; her loved ones’ lives became a living hell. Her neighborhood is under siege with media types, police and the FBI all looking around looking for clues. This case is now being showcased on a primetime TV show not known for garnering results of finding missing tots, but rather for exploiting everyone involved for ratings. Grace is not here going door-to-door looking for clues. She is doing tabloid styled interviews all via a satellite, with anyone willing to speak on camera. She does not care about our city, this family or this missing child. Grace is paid on ratings, not results. Nancy Grace is looking for her next Casey Anthony. If you know where this child is, please speak up. Every day little Elaina is not returned or found is yet another day of torture for her loved ones, something no person could ever deserve. It is also another day of bad press for the city of Toledo, and that is something we cannot afford. I applaud the response and actions of the local authorities and East Toledo residents who have spent hours, searching and praying for this little girl. I hope one of you will uncover the clue that will bring Elaina home to her family and send Nancy Grace packing.

This just released.
A confession allegedly from Angela to a cellmate. Is it true? We'll see. From the Toledo Free Press Relatives of one of Angela Steinfurth’s cellmates alerted the FBI late Tuesday evening to the potential location of Steinfurth’s missing 18-month-old daughter, Elaina. Jobeth Adams of North Toledo said her sister, Connie Elam, called her June 18 from Lucas County Corrections Center. Elam told Adams that Steinfurth had confessed to helping her boyfriend hide Elaina’s body. “[Elam] called Tuesday night, and she was really upset,” Adams said. “She said, ‘I don’t know why this woman has decided to confide in me.’” According to Elam, Steinfurth’s boyfriend Steven W. King threw Elaina up against the wall between the night of June 1 and the morning of June 2, injuring her. The two then put the toddler down for a nap. When they returned, Elaina was dead. “They wrapped [Elaina] up in a blanket, and took her down by the High-Level Bridge and [King] stood behind [Angela] and she threw this baby in the river,” Adams said. “[I said], ‘So what you’re trying to tell me, Connie, is there no hope for this baby coming home?,’” Adams said. “And she said, ‘No Jobeth.’ She said, ‘They’re looking in the right place for this baby. This baby is dead. She’s in the river.’” Adams’ husband called Toledo Police Department’s Crime Stoppers tip line on June 18 after her conversation with Elam. “Carl called and gave all the information, and they transferred us over to the FBI.” Adams said her sister is only interested in helping the search for Elaina. “The other women [in Steinfurth’s cell] want something. My sister don’t want something,” Adams said. “That’s the reason she said something.”

This cellmate has endangering children charges too. I do think Angela and boyfriend had something to do with it...I'm just not gonna take this ladies word for it.
