MISSING/FOUND DEAD: Baby Elaina - Toledo
#61
Amidst the family feuds and heat, the neighborhood continues searching and holding prayer vigils.

Elaina's been missing 3 weeks now. I keep wondering how her 4 year old sister is doing.

Elaina's mother Angela will appear in court tomorrow. I hope she's not released (unless investigators think it will be more helpful to have her on the outside).

That is for sure! she is being tarred and feathered electronically.

The King household really troubles me we have heard from everyone almost except Mr King the head of the household? I'd like to know what he has to say about the whole event? he slept in the house that evening as far as we know? does Steven King Sr. work or is he at home all the time? Was he there when Steven King Jr brought Angela and the 2 children to the home?
did he see the 2 children? Did he hear a baby cry at all during the night?

The whole thing stinks!! at this King household so many people and no one knows anything.

PS good to see you on board OlderThanDirt and thanks for the update.

That's what I think has happened every time I see this thread has a new post.

I often wish I would just stay away from these threads. They make me sad.

Video Interview below by NorthWestOhio.com
Here is the gas station that Angela and baby Elaina apparently stopped at between 8 & 9.30 a.m. the day she went missing, nothing like sticky honeybuns & drinks for your baby with foodstamps at the local gas station.

Interesting to find out Angela Stienfurths father lives a couple streets back in behind the gas station, baby Elaina's grandfather

I don't believe this woman here we are this length of time and she comes out with this story, no bruises on baby Elaina no marks nothing. Doesn't this interview make Frank out a liar? Frank had the video on Nancy Grace with baby Elaina.

2 paragraphs below taken from NorthWestOhio.com
The gas station does have video surveillance, but the day before the disappearance, the system was down. Heather says the store owner cam in later that morning and fixed the system. They later reviewed the tape, but Angela and her baby were not seen. According to Heather, this means that Angela came some time before the system was fixed.

Heather admits the fact that the cameras were down does cast a shadow of doubt on her report, but she could not keep the information from authorities. She says she filed the report the Saturday after the baby went missing, six days later. She did not think her information was relevant until more facts of the case started to emerge.

You know what pisses me off. All these neighbors are coming out NOW and telling how she abused this child. One lady said she heard her calling both children really bad names, and smacking them upside the head.

Why the hell don't they do something before a child has to die, and I convinced this little darling is no doubt dead. Why is always too late before neighbors, family, etc. come forward. It just pisses me off!!!!

Angela was in court today, bail reduced to 100,000 with NO 10% rule.

From a @wnwo reporter at angela`s hearing: "at one point she even turned around and blew a kiss (im assuming to her stepfather). She then whispered something to her attorney and laughed."

Glad you're having a wonderful time in jail, with your pigtail braids that Elaina will never get, and your blowing of kisses and giggles. You filthy wench.

Isn't that lovely to be in such a frame of mind she managed a giggle while her community is looking for her child who is probably dead.

I loathe everyone at this moment in time. I'd probably applaud if she were torched in the village square.

Bizarre behaviour for a mother with a missing baby!

The whole thing doesn't add up to me. This Steven King has always been in the picture with Angela Steinfurth, the Steinfurth's and the King's meet at a campground, then if I am not mistaken SK is in her wedding picture, then I have observed him in other pictures with her so this guy has constantly been hovering around. I am beginning to wonder who the real father of baby Elaina is? King was ready to start a fight with TJ why? then he wanted to fight with Terry Steinfurth Sr. what gives there?

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now)

Day 25 - June 26, 2013:

Angela Steinfurth was back in court Wednesday morning.

Steinfurth's attorney asked the judge for supervision instead of remaining in jail. The judge denied the request and set her bond at $100,000.

Originally, Steinfurth was in municipal court arrested on a felonious child endangering charge. However, that charge was dropped earlier this week and switched with an indictment by a grand jury on an obstructing justice charge, which is also a felony.

Steinfurth is back in the Lucas County Jail, where she has been for two weeks.

I was told by a friend that's a Lucas co police officer- not sure the truth behind this; and I might distort what he said- but he said the child endangerment charges were dropped because if they find a body/ or have enough evidence that Elaina has passed they wouldn't be able to charge her with murder??? It doesn't make sense to me.

Thanks, Harvey. Your friend's insight reminded me of another case of a missing child where LE dropped strong abuse charges against the mother.

The case of little Jhessye Shockley still makes me mad and sad all at once. Jhessye's mom, Jerice Hunter, was first arrested on suspicion of abusing missing Jhessye (of which she was undeniably guilty). Those charges were dropped shortly thereafter and Hunter was released while LE continued to investigate.

I found LE's statement explaining their rationale:
Prosecutors said then that they wanted to continue investigating and were worried that Hunter would not be eligible for a potential murder charge if she was convicted of abusing Shockley, a situation known as double jeopardy.
Snipped from: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/06...63040.html

I understand LE's concern now; if they fear the baby died from abuse, a later murder charge on those grounds could be considered being tried twice for the same crime if the suspect has already been convicted of abuse/neglect/endangerment. Better to keep investigating and not risk a more serious conviction down the road.

At least in Elaina's case, LE can keep Angela locked up and accessible on obstruction charges for a couple of months while they investigate and search for Elaina. Hopefully, LE will be able to find out what really happened to Elaina and charge the responsible person(s) before Angela is released from jail.

P.s. While LE still hasn't located Jhessye's body, they gathered enough evidence to charge her POS mother with felony child abuse and murder. Jerice Hunter makes Angela Steinfurth look like June Cleaver - yeah, she's that 'effin bad.

Fisherman's line reels in what could be hair
BY DAVID PATCH
BLADE STAFF WRITER

A fisherman whose line snagged something on the Maumee River's bottom beneath the Anthony Wayne Bridge today then reeled in what searchers for a missing infant believe could be several strands of the child's hair.

But a Toledo Fire Department official said the evidence was not strong enough to justify sending divers back into the murky water, where previous searches for the body of Elaina Steinfurth had come up empty.

I don't know how to make the quotes smaller on my phone. Can mock make an app? Anyway I never heard of that case. So I will turn to google. My best friend.

I still cannot wrap my head around the fact that you cannot be charged for child abuse and murder.

There is a mobile version of Mock & the software should switch to it immediately upon recognizing you're using a mobile device. If that hasn't happened scroll all the way to the bottom of any page & click on "mobile version".

LE can definitely charge someone for child abuse and murder.

The issue is timing of those two separate charges. Even though they're separate crimes, much of the evidence used in the prosecution at both trials could be largely the same.

Even taking the possibility of double jeopardy out of the equation, if LE gets an abuse conviction and later charges the same person with murder of the same victim, the prosecution will have shown many of its cards to the defense in the previous abuse trial. The prosecution won't want to give the defense such a sneak peek and risk a murder conviction for the sake of an abuse conviction. Better to wait and keep investigating/searching.

LE's got Angela behind bars. She has no opportunity to abuse another child at this time. Imo and based on what your friend told you, it makes sense that LE wouldn't rush forward with pressing abuse charges at this time. If Elaina is found dead or LE exhausts all reasonable possibilities of finding the baby and suspects that she died at the hands of Angela (and/or others), they can charge Angela with abuse and other crimes simultaneously at that time.

Back to the River - a new lead?

Elaina with her 4 year old sister, Kylee

Just south of the Anthony Wayne Bridge on the Maumee River, where a previous unconfirmed tip alleged that Angela Steinfurth and her boyfriend had dropped the body of Baby Elaina after she died of injuries caused by abuse, Patrick Howard snagged his fishing line on something underwater. When he managed to free the line and reel it in, he noticed that he had picked up a chilling piece of debris: "a tuft of brownish blonde hair."

Authorities elected to submit the hair to the lab before sending divers into the river. "Once we are able to determine what kind of hair it is, if it turns out to be human hair, then we will go a little further and do a DNA analysis to see if it matches up with baby Elaina," explained Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

Baby Elaina's grandfather expressed frustration over the lack of communication he and the rest of Baby Elaina's family have received from the authorities handling the case.

"My son [Baby Elaina's father] and I feel we should hear from the detectives at least once a day, or once every other day," said Steinfurth. "Just to let us know that yes they still are out there doing their jobs, and sometimes we're not getting that and it makes you second-guess yourself."
