SEX, DEATH, AND EXORCISM AT THE KANSAS CITY IHOP

This bizarre story centers around the IHOP -- not the International House of Pancakes, but the International House of Prayer in Kansas City.

^ Left: Bethany Deaton...Center: Tyler Deaton...Right: Micah Moore

Bethany Deaton, 27, was found dead by a park ranger in the back of a white van in November 2012. She had a bag over her head, there were pills in her reach, and a suicide note was found with her body. She'd been hospitalized for attempted suicide a week earlier.

The note found with her body read:
"My name is Bethany Deaton. I chose this evil thing. I did it because I wouldn't be a real person and what is the point of living if it is too late for that? I wish I had chosen differently a long time ago. I knew it all and refused to listen. Maybe Jesus will still save me."

Bethany Deaton was a nurse who had been married to Tyler Deaton -- a leader within the IHOP -- for about two weeks at the time of her death. One of the roommates in the communal home shared by the Deatons and other IHOP members was Micah Moore.

The Medical Examiner ruled Bethany's death a suicide. But, a couple of days later, Micah Moore showed up at the police station and confessed to murdering Bethany. He claimed that he had drugged and strangled Bethany on the direction of her husband, Tyler Deaton.

Tyler Deaton is a cult leader, IMO. He controlled the sex lives, daily routines, and finances of about 20 IHOP members in his group. Tyler had reportedly gone through gay conversion therapy and been cured. His blog posts in support of turning family members against each other because they should be focused on loving Jesus rather than each other are weird. Moore (and later other members of the cult who considered Tyler their "spiritual leader") claimed that they had all sexually assaulted Bethany regularly on the direction of Tyler Deaton. Cult members also told police that Tyler Deaton had engaged in sexual relations with several male members of the group. Tyler Deaton has not been charged with any crime.

[Image: article-2014881-0D0420A800000578-314_468x335.jpg]
Mike Bickle ^ is head of the International House of Prayer. There are reportedly thousands of members from all over the world. He and other IHOP leaders immediately began distancing themselves from Tyler Deaton and the whole sordid affair -- they assert that Tyler and his group had become a cult. Bickle, by the way, believes that Oprah Winfrey is The Anti-Christ (that's what he told God TV). He has ties to Texas Governor Rick Perry and espouses extreme opposition to gay marriage and abortion.

Micah Moore is charged with murder. He and his attorneys have recanted his confession and now claim that he was exhausted and that his confession was rendered following a group exorcism at an IHOP group meeting.

The exorcism took place two days after Bethany Deaton’s funeral. The defense motion says the reported exorcism at an IHOP retreat involved “putting their hands on cult members, shouting at demons to leave and scream-praying in tongues, crying and falling to the floor.”

There is reportedly no DNA or physical evidence tying Moore to Bethany's death.

Micah Moore's murder trial is scheduled to begin on November 17. It should be very interesting. I don't know what to believe because everyone involved seems nutty as a fruitcake to me.

It is really sad the Bethany Deaton is dead and that she ended up falling for all of the religious cult bullshit in the first place.

Doesn't look like there will be any trials though -- the prosecutor dropped the murder charge against Micah Moore yesterday and no one else has been charged with any crimes in relation to her death.

I guess it's back to being considered a case of suicide. I don't know why it took authorities two years to determine that Moore's confession was a false statement when he'd recanted so quickly, but he's off the hook now.

Snip:
A Missouri prosecutor has dropped charges against Micah Moore, a former suburban Kansas City man who confessed to killing the wife of his prayer group leader and later recanted.

Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said Friday that her office could not ethically pursue a murder charge against 25-year-old Micah Moore, formerly of Grandview, in the October 2012 death of Bethany Deaton because his confession was unreliable.

Deaton's body was found inside her locked minivan at Longview Lake with a loosely tied bag over her head and a suicide note and empty 100-count bottle of acetaminophen nearby.

Moore's attorney Melanie Morgan said Friday that "Micah suffered from what was diagnosed as a reactive psychotic episode triggered by the suicide of his friend, the realization that he was part of a cult and its sudden dismantling by untrained individuals in a religious fervor. Many participants described it as an exorcism. In the course of that episode, Micah made false statements to law enforcement regarding Bethany Deaton's death."

Following news of the charges being dropped Friday, Morgan issued a statement saying, "Not only was Micah's innocence determined through an exhaustive investigation, the investigation revealed Ms. Deaton's tragic suicide was the result of untreated severe depression."

"Micah deeply regrets that his statements, even though retracted quickly and contradicted by the physical evidence, compounded the pain suffered by Ms. Deaton's family," the statement continued.

Moore and Deaton were part of a roughly 20-member prayer group who came to the Kansas City area from Texas to be part of International House of Prayer University, an evangelical Christian organization focused on missions and preparation for the end of time.

Members lived in a communal-type arrangement in Grandview, where Tyler Deaton, Bethany's husband, controlled everything from how members spent their free time to when they were required to worship, Moore's attorneys said.

17-year-old murder suspect Jose Reyes, 15-year-old murder victim Corianne Cervantes

Jose had sold his soul to the devil and he wanted his 16-year-old unnamed friend to do the the same.

So, the two boys got their younger school mate, Corianne, into a vacant Houston, Tx apartment and tortured and murdered her.

A neighbor found the girl dead in the apartment a couple of days after she went messing. Beside her body were what prosecutors call "religious cult items". An upside down crucifix was carved on her stomach. She had been beaten with an ashtray and a toilet seat and sexually assaulted.

UPDATE -- TRIAL BEGINS

Corianne died a brutal death at the hands of her friends. I hope both of the boys are locked up for good (assuming they're guilty, which looks to be a very safe bet).

Snip:
Opening statements began in the trial of 18-year-old Jose E. Reyes, who prosecutors say is responsible for the February death of 15-year-old Corriann Cervantes in a vacant apartment southeast of Houston.

A 16-year-old boy also is charged with capital murder and is expected to stand trial later.

Reyes, who was 17 at the time of the crime, faces a life sentence if convicted of capital murder but would be eligible for parole after 40 years, according to the Houston Chronicle. If he's convicted of murder, the jury would determine his punishment.

Prosecutors contend the two teens were hoping to make a deal with the devil when they disfigured the girl's body, including carving an upside down crucifix on her stomach.

"Whether or not the devil was involved, what happened in that apartment was sadistic and inhumane," Harris County Assistant District Attorney John Jordan told jurors. "He said he had no regrets."

Jordan told jurors Cervantes and the alleged assailants, who attended school together, went to the apartment to have sex after a late night of alcohol and marijuana use at a friend's apartment. He said the scene descended from consensual sex to a brutal beating with the heavy porcelain lid of a toilet tank.

"There were pieces of porcelain embedded in her face," Jordan said. He said the teens used a screwdriver to stab Cervantes in the face and torso dozens of times.

Defense attorney Jerald Graber told the newspaper the defense team would "zealously represent" Reyes.

^ That was quick.

Jose Reyes, 18, was found guilty of capital murder by a jury in Harris County, Texas on Thursday afternoon and will automatically be sentenced to life in prison. Due to his age at the time of the alleged crime - 17 - he was not eligible for the death penalty.

I hope his accomplice, who is charged as a minor, also ends up being found guilty and spending life behind bars.

Yeah, some of them are bullshitters looking for a cop out, I agree. But, most should have been confined to in-patient treatment given their behaviors, for their own well-being and for the safety of those around them.

This is a very sad case of a mother who showed signs of severe post-partem depression and reported that demons were talking to her. She was briefly hospitalized for psychiatric problems and released. Her 3-month-old daughter was removed from her custody and given to the baby's aunt.

Unfortunately, the aunt let the mother move in with her and the baby, against court orders.

Well, the mother, ^ Deasia Watkins, 20, allegedly beheaded her three-month-old daughter, Janiyah, at the home in Hamilton County, Ohio on Monday.

A five-year-old child who was at the house to catch a school bus found the baby's body and ran outside to tell a male relative. The man woke up the aunt and she called police.

RIP Janiyah Watkins. Mom will have no problem using a mental impairment defense, IMO. Nor should she, based on what's known now. She should be confined to a mental facility (probably for life). Other than a disturbing the peace charge, Deasia Watkins had no criminal record.

Post partum depression is a genuine mental illness as a result of childbirth and occurs 1-2 times per 1,000 deliveries. There can be a variety of symptoms which is one reason it is sometimes misdiagnosed. Essentially, the most dangerous symptom is when patient hears voices telling her to kill herself and/or her child. Patient has to start anti-psychotic medications immediately and be under care of health care provider 247 indefinitely. In any case, child needs to be separated from mother. I think Doctor was efficient in his quick diagnosis. O.K. they then place baby with the Aunt knowing (or if they didn't, should have) it would provide access to the mother. Mother was prescribed appropriate meds but there didn't seem to be any system or supervision in place to ensure she was taking medications or receiving any type of therapy. So, IMO, it was placing baby with the Aunt which should have been a big no no and no one was overseeing mother's psychoses. This can also run in families....poor baby....Hair, I just noticed the info re court orders. In cases like this, just like restraining orders, they are going to be ignored by the offending individuals, but why didn't Aunt call someone?

I just did some checking for an update and more details, blueberry.

Here's what I know:

- About a month after Janiyah was born, her mother Deasia started acted very strangely towards the baby. 911 was called by a neighbor because she heard Janiyah crying non-stop for about an hour with Deasia screaming at the baby the whole time.

-When cops arrived, Deasia was taken in for a 72-hour psych hold.

-You were correct about the anti-psychotics. Deasia was diagnosed with postpartum psychosis and treated with Risperdal for 72 hours, and given a prescription for it. Then, unfortunately, she was released from the hospital. The baby was put in the custody of the aunt. Deasia was restricted from being around the baby by court order.

-I do not know why the aunt let Deasia move in sometime later. Maybe Deasia had nowhere to go and the aunt didn't understand the gravity of the illness. Maybe Deasia was taking her prescription for a while so the aunt didn't think she was a danger any longer and wanted her to bond with her daughter. (I'm just speculating; I'll post an update when confirmed details on that front become available.)

-In any case, since her arrest on Monday, Deasia has been in the hospital. She is zombied-out; hasn't spoken a word. Doctors say the illness can wreak havoc on those mothers afflicted with it and she is experiencing deep trauma (I remember Andrea Yates practically begging her husband and church to institutionalize her again because of the voices she was hearing; of course they didn't until after she drowned all of her children).

-It doesn't appear LE thinks Deasia is faking anything. Even the prosecutor says he's having a hard time not feeling sympathy for her.

-The investigators and prosecutors are at a standstill until Deasia is able to start talking to a doctor and they have more to go on. They're waiting for medication.

- Janiyah's father told the court that Deasia was diagnosed with postpartum psychosis after she started “acting crazy” and “speaking of demons”. He says he's lost; devastated.

I haven't found any statement about why/how Deasia Watkins was allowed to be around her baby at the aunt's house.

But, the aunt was freaking out when she called 911. I feel sorry for the five year old who first discovered Janiyah dead, and his father (heard on the 911 call -- he's the aunt's adult son).

Warning: This audio is disturbing.

The 911 operator pissed me off at the start of the call, very cold and dismissive sounding. But, she couldn't have known that the aunt had just seen the body of Janiyah in a pool of blood on her kitchen counter. The baby had been stabbed multiple times in the face and decapitated.

It turns out that when police got to the house, they found the baby's mother Deasia Watkins covered with blood and sleeping in one of the bedrooms. She was catatonic and still hasn't spoken.

Police did the right thing when they put Deasia on a psych hold 2 months ago. It seems doctors did the right thing by prescribing the Risperdal. The judge did the right thing removing Janiyah from Deasia following the postpartum diagnosis.

Too bad the mother apparently didn't keep taking the anti-psychotic and was either allowed to be around the baby or sneaked into her aunt's house and that she wasn't monitored closely after release (or kept much longer). That poor baby died a horrendous death.

Hair, thanks for the video; that is just heartbreaking. I had trouble understanding everything, but toward the last it sounded like the Aunt who was sobbing asked "how did she get into the house?" Did i hear that correctly. Apparently family didn't even know mother was in the house as it said that police found bloodied mother asleep in one of the bedrooms. I may have just misconstrued everything, but dang, what a tragic thing to happen and to hear that utter despair in their voices.....
