The "red" in redskin refers to the color of their skin. Just like black, brown and white. For fucks sake . . . black and white are acceptable race designators! Why not red? Red, prairie, teepee, feather, injun, squaw . . . are not offensive words to me. These assholes are acting if the name was "Redniggers". And . . . what is the race of the judge? My guess . . . white. Another example of the great white fathers determining what is best for their childish, savage and stupid wards.

When the father asks the great spirit to welcome another warrior into his kingdom I bawl like a baby. I believe it's Russell Means?

Chingachgook standing with Hawkeye overlooking a valley and mourning the loss of his son:
"Great Spirit, Maker Of All Life. A warrior goes to you swift and straight as an arrow shot into the sun. Welcome him and let him take his place at the council fire of my people. He is Uncas, my son. Tell them to be patient and ask death for speed; for they are all there but one - I, Chigachgook- Last of the Mohicans." The soundtrack adds to the emotion in the moment, and as a parent, the idea of saying goodbye to your child really makes it a powerful scene for me.

Why aren't my red brother and sisters protesting Red Man chewing tobacco?
Tobacco is evil. Wait! That shit is killing whites and blacks . . . but it doesn't cause low fetal birth weight! Never mind.

Cry me a river that the majority of the population makes decisions for the entire country. Yeah, white people make decisions. Finding a Native American judge for a Native American case, or a Black judge for a Black case, etc etc - that's called segregation. There was an uphill struggle to end that in America. Guess what... 8% of America uses drugs. We still decide it's not ok for everyone. If .1% of the population thinks Redskin offends them, and .7% of the population decides it doesn't, or that it's a proud heritage, it's still up to 100% of the country to make the decision, especially the 80% white people.
You're right, Red is the same as White, or Black, or Brown. Do you see all the other teams named the New England Whiteys? Or the Baltimore Blacks? That shit wouldn't fly in a million years. When MS says, "Look, Minnesota blacks think that Chicago blacks are assholes," I want to stab my eyes out with a spoon. Sounds like my racist grandmother. Black people. Adjective, not noun. Race does not define a person, it describes the person. I'm getting offtrack, but it's not a simple decision whether it offends more Native Americans than are proud of it. It's about American society deciding what's racially acceptable for everyone. If Redskin flies, watch out for the Chicago Blacks to take over the NFL in a few years.

I certainly like the tradition of these team names and would love to tell everybody to just get over it, but if there are enough that are truly offended, then do away with the names.

If there were a bunch of uppity Scandinavians who were offended by 'Vikings', would you be in favor of changing the team name MS?

I'm thinking the Buccaneers.
Everyone knows that "buck" is a derogatory term for a black man.

With the money those savages make through casinos you would think they could buy the Redskins and change the name to the "Daisies" but they could care less about the name.
White punks on dope, that's who is ranting about all this stupidity.
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

No, pale-face . . . it's not up to 100% of the population or the American society. Nine jurists in DC also decide and have decided . . . just last week. In this case, it's up to one white, male, judge. As (you said) Red is the same as White, Black or Brown . . . should the Cincinnati Reds be next on the list of offensive teams? Like your example of the NFL Chicago Blacks? I don't even know what to do with the St. Louis Blues.

And those tricky dicks in Cleveland aren't fooling anyone with the Browns.
We know it's not REALLY named after Paul Brown. *wink wink*

And just what kind of message are Boston and Chicago sending with their red and white sox? Should tall people be offended by the SF and NY Giants?

And let's not stop with the professional teams.
What a wonderful collection of college teams and mascots that cannot, by any stretch of the imagination, be considered neutral. Universities teach. Hatred and intolerance are taught. The NCAA promotes racism and hatred. |
