And measure it against Six's statistic where Blacks comprise 17% of the population I get that the occurrence of black serial killers is really greater than White serial killers (as a percentage within their own population). Whites out number Blacks by 3.7 to 1in the US. This indicates that if Blacks were equal in number to Whites they would easily be topping the chart.

Searches and Speculation Continue


Hannah Graham was reportedly last seen outside the Tempo bar ^ at the downtown mall in Charlottesville.

Witnesses place her with Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr, who bought two beers at the bar. The bar owner says that Hannah wasn't inside the bar (she is underaged); police say at least one witness saw her in the bar with Matthew.

Witnesses also claim that Hannah could barely walk when she left the bar and that Matthew put his arm around her as they walked off. Police believe that Hannah got into Matthew's car, but it's not clear whether anyone saw her get in the car. Matthew is remaining silent at this point. He reportedly told investigators before he was named a suspect that he had bought her a drink, but that she did not get into his car or leave with him.

The present charge against Matthew of abduction with intent to defile has some people speculating that a date rape drug was involved.

Reports online suggest that the UVA Medical Center regularly uses the drug as a powerful sedative in its operating rooms. A spokeswoman said Saturday that she could not comment on whether the hospital is checking for missing drugs where Matthew worked.

Yesterday's sweep of mountain roads (using police ATVs) is in part an effort to follow up on more than 1,600 tips Charlottesville police have received in the two weeks Graham has been missing. But this careful combing of farmland is also an effort to cast a wide net, given the geographic profile of previous missing person cases in the area, including the 2009 disappearance of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington.

All that is certain is Matthew was with Graham that night and she is still missing. He is due to appear in court on Thursday.

Wow -- this is huge news if it turns out that Matthew's DNA has been shown to match the 2005 rape kit sample (the unidentified victim is the one that provided the description for the perp sketch) which also matched DNA found on Morgan Harrington's body.

If Matthew is the guy, his job might afford him access to a lot of things aside from drugs that could help him in his predatory activities and hiding his crime(s).

I'd think that there would be surveillance cams all over the interior and exterior of hospitals, but don't know that for sure.

Morgan Harrington's body was found in a remote farm field, but Matthew wasn't working as a hospital tech back then. If he's the guy and he killed Hannah, it's possible he used a different method for disposing of the body this time out.

I was just reading an article about this and I feel like I'm missing something - it states that a link has been made between Matthew and the disappearance, rape and murder of another young woman and it's being termed as a significant break yet they go one to say that once that has been confirmed he'll be charged with other crimes. Wouldn't the confirmation be the fact that a link has been made?

Yeah, it's a little confusing to me too. It's possible that LE is being honest and intentionally vague at the same time.

If, for example, LE found something belonging to Morgan Harrington in the search of Matthew's apartment, they've already got a link between Matthew and Morgan's case. But, if they haven't yet gotten formal results matching Matthew's DNA to the DNA retrieved from Morgan or her discarded Pantera t-shirt, LE doesn't yet have substantiated evidence that he was in direct physical contact with her. That's just an example; there could be a number of ways that LE has linked Matthew to Morgan (surveillance at the Metallica concert, familiarity with the farm where she was dumped, chat records, etc..).

This is potentially a huge development in not only the disappearance of Hannah Graham, but also an unsolved brutal rape and a high-profile rape/murder (and possibly other rapes and/or murders). I think LE wants to make sure they've got everything just right before they show their full hand and file additional charges. Matthew isn't going anywhere in the meantime.

The sketch of the 2005 rapist and suspected 2009 killer of Morgan Harrington (the one posted upthread) had apparently been age-progressed. The one above is the original sketch based on the rape victim's description. It's a much closer match, IMO.

Matthew was working as a taxi driver when Morgan Harrington went missing and was raped/murdered. Witnesses who saw her on the bridge after she was denied re-entry into the concert arena said that she was hitchhiking. IIRC, one witness said it looked more like she was trying to flag a taxi.

The remote field where Morgan's body was found was only a couple of miles away from where Matthew grew up and went to school. Investigators and the Harrington family have always maintained that only someone with knowledge of the area would have been able to navigate it and dump a body there without detection.

All of which is circumstantial evidence. If there's DNA or other forensic evidence linking Matthew to Morgan, that circumstantial evidence will be icing on the prosecutor's case against Matthew; hoping it can all be used to elicit Hannah's location.

I haven't yet seen a direct confirmation from an identified LE source that Matthew's DNA matches the DNA collected in Morgan's case.

A forensic clue could be Matthew's DNA or clothing/personal items from the previous victims. Especially in the case of the rape I would bet on DNA (unless he kept the rape victim's drivers license or something of that nature).

There have been two other disappearances in the area beside Harrington and Graham. 19 year old Samantha Clarke has been missing since September 2010, and 19 year old DaShad Laquinn Smith missing since November 2012.

It may turn out that Jesse Matthew is a bonafide serial killer. The rape happened in 2005, Harrington was killed in 2009, Clarke disappeared in 2010, Smith in 2012, now Graham in 2014. The other coincidence is that all these females disappeared between September and November of their respective year (the rape occurred in September). If Matthew did it he could have cyclical triggers for homicide. Then again, he may have nothing to do with the other disappearances and I'm just blowing smoke.

Just read on Facebook, that there is a possible link in forensic evidence between Hannah Graham and Morgan Harrington's murder. If this proves to be the case, we will have a bona fide serial killer in custody.

CNN has been running a headline for the last few days that there's a DNA link between Hannah and Morgan's cases -- they cite an inside LE source.

But, I've only seen LE directly state "a forensic link". I hope that there's a DNA link -- that's about as solid as evidence gets.

I think Randy Allen Taylor is guilty of abducting and killing Samantha Clarke and Alexis Murphy (he was convicted of Alexis' murder; never charged in Samantha's unsolved case). He was the last known person in contact with both women before they disappeared.

It won't surprise me if Jesse Matthew is responsible for Morgan's rape/murder and whatever has happened to Hannah Graham. I'm also interested in the possibility that he's linked to Cassandra Morton.

Cassandra's family reported her missing Oct. 14, 2009, several days after she was seen walking along Park Avenue (Morgan Harrington went missing Oct. 17, 2009). Cassandra's body was discovered by a hiker on Camp Hydaway Road near Liberty University on Nov. 29, 2009. Matthew was familiar with the area as a former student at Liberty.

I'm not as familiar with Cassandra's case as the others and don't know if authorities were able to recover any perp DNA from her body or at the crime scene. I hope so.

Just found a confirmation that no DNA was recovered in Cassandra's case, unfortunately.

A bond hearing for suspect Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr was schedule for today, but Jesse Leroy Matthew's attorney asked for a postponement.

Suspect Matthew is now scheduled to appear on the Reckless Driving charge on December 1^st.

He is scheduled to appear on the Abduction with Intent to Defile charge on December 4^th.

More information about Matthew's history is being unearthed by reporters. Here's some background and bits that I've come across as being confirmed by identified sources this week in media reports.

HANNAH GRAHAM ABDUCTION:
Matthew was seen by witnesses waking away from Tempo Bar with his arm around a very unstable Hannah Graham after 1:30 am on September 13, 2014. Since then, she hasn't been seen or heard from by anyone who knows her. Matthew has been charged with Abduction with Intent to Defile in Hannah's case. LE has announced that there is a forensic link between the suspect in Hannah Graham's case and the rape/murder of Morgan Harrington in 2009. (Some media is citing 'DNA link', but I haven't seen that confirmed directly by an identified LEO thus far and LE hasn't provided details of anything recovered in searches of Matthew's property -- so I'm not running with 'DNA' as fact yet.)

MORGAN HARRINGTON RAPE/MURDER CONNECTION:
Matthew worked for Yellow Cab at the time of Morgan Harrington's disappearance. She was last seen walking away from UVA's John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville after being denied re-entry to the Metallica concert and texting her friends that she'd find a ride home; on the evening of October 17, 2009. Morgan was intoxicated and witnesses claim she was disoriented outside the arena. Morgan was raped and killed -- her body was found in a field on Anchorage Farm property on January 26, 2010. Anchorage Farm is about 11 miles south of the arena; both are in Albemarle County. Matthew lived within a few miles of Anchorage Farm growing up. He is familiar with the area.

Morgan Harrington's DNA is linked to brutal rape in 2005; the perp fled when a passerby approached the crime in progress. The sketch derived from the witness' description is posted upthread.

TWO CONFIRMED UNIVERSITY SEXUAL ASSAULT ALLEGATIONS:
Jesse Matthew was accused of sexually assaulting a female student at Liberty University on October 17, 2002. He played on the football team. He was not prosecuted as the victim did not press charges (reason unknown). Matthew claimed the sex was consensual. Consensual sex between students is against the code of conduct at Liberty University (founded by Jerry Falwell). He left the school.

Jesse Matthew was accused of sexually assaulting a female student at Christopher Newport University on September 7, 2003. He was a member of the football team. He was not prosecuted as the victim did not press charges (reason unknown). He left the school five days later.

HIGH SCHOOL:

In his senior year, ^ Matthew was captain of the Monticello Mustangs football team at Abermarle High School. He was also on the wrestling team and was named athlete of the year. He is described by other students as popular, loyal, outgoing, a gentle giant, etc...

EMPLOYMENT / VOLUNTEER AT TIME OF ARREST:
Matthew was employed at the University of Virginia Hospital as an operating room patient tech from August 2012 until his arrest. He is described by co-workers as pleasant, friendly, reliable, etc...

Matthew was a volunteer coach at the Covenant Christian School prior to his arrest. He is described by the players, parents, and pastor as warm, easy-going, etc...

CRIMINAL RECORD:
Matthew has many traffic violations on his record. He also punched an attorney in the face and then apologized and took the attorney to get medical attention -- the attorney didn't pursue prosecution. He has a grand theft larceny charge apparently associated with dissatisfaction with an auto repair. (Note: Matthew's father has the same name and several intoxication related charges and an indecent exposure -- probably for urinating in public, IMO -- on his record).

Along with the Hannah Graham disappearance and the Morgan Harrington murder, Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr. is currently being investigated for possible involvement in the 2009 murder of Cassandra Morton and several missing persons cases in Virginia.

Jesse Leroy Matthew's Time Line On Night Of Hannah's Disappearance

A local investigative reporter, Coy Barefoot, interviewed several friends, acquaintances and witnesses who were at the bars with Matthew leading up to Hannah's disappearance.

It's a very interesting read and not flattering to Matthew. Matthew had already been named a suspect in Hannah's abduction when the interviews were conducted.


^Matthew at The Blue Light Grill, 12:05am, Saturday September 13. This was approximately 90 minutes before he was seen walking away from Tempo with Hannah Graham. These are the same clothes he was wearing in the surveillance cam video of him following Hannah -- the cameras make the clothes appear white.

The Search for Hannah Continues -- No Stone Left Unturned



In searching for Hannah this week, Virginia authorities have used a drone ^ to aid in the search for a missing person for the first time. The drone comes with cameras and heat sensors. It was deployed by Virginia Tech over areas of Albemarle County that all-terrain vehicles and helicopters cannot reach.

“There is a camera system on board. From what we know we may be able to observe on the ground what the pilot sees,” said Albemarle Police Chief Col. Steve Sellers.

Virginia Tech's Institute of Critical Technology and Applied Science will operate and oversee the Aeryon SkyRanger. “Some of the areas we are going to search are difficult for ATVs to get into. They are difficult for a helicopter to get into because of the tension in the power lines,” Sellers said.

Fifty-five people searched by ATVs, on foot, and by helicopter Wednesday.

“We are covering that area that we talked about earlier that is between Broad Lynch Road and Scottsville. We are still working toward Stoney Point northeast of the city,” Eggeman said.

The Department of Emergency Management has covered 135 miles. Charlottesville police have received more than 3,000 tips and renew their vow to find Graham.

Still no sign of Hannah Graham, sadly. I hope Hannah is recovered soon -- searches on foot and via drone continue.

Some new information possibly linking Jesse Leroy Matthew to Morgan Harrington's rape/murder was released this week.

It's been confirmed that Matthew was working as a cab driver in the area on the night that Morgan was intoxicated and trying to find a ride home from the Metallica concert back in 2009.

He was driving for Access Taxi, which was later merged with Yellow Cab.

Police have reportedly found and seized the taxi that he was driving that night. It was located on a farm (Morgan's body was found in a field on Anchorage Farm; I don't know if the taxi was found on that same huge piece of farm land).
