Do you live in one of those communities where you're told you can't fly a flag or have cars parked in your driveway? That may be a little extreme but I'm sure most of you know what I am referring to.

People have tried to take Homeowners Associations to court because their policies conflict with the amendments of free speech. The plaintiffs lose because it's been ruled that choosing to live in that area is volunteering to give up that right.
Personally I think if you own the land, you should be able to paint your house whatever color you like.

I called a guy at work that lives down the street once because there was a guy walking around his house and in the back yard. It ended up being a guy looking at the windows for replacements, but he thanked me for keeping an eye out for him.

I would never live where there's an HOA!!
Imagine being told you can't fly the American flag...in America.

Without them, you'd have the asshat that wants to open up a dog boarding business right next door to you, or you'd have the asshat that never mows his yard right next to you. Or you'd have the guy thats a hoarder, and piles his junk cars all over his yard living right next to you. Of the millions of sperm injected into your mother's pussy, you were the quickest?

It's because of reasons like that I have mixed feelings about them. I like things clean & tidy BUT I have a problem with people being told they can't fly a flag or have their visiting parents RV in the driveway for a week, shit like that.

We have one. I never hear from them so I guess I haven't broken any rules. Lol. The treasurer lives right next door to me.

Had a co-worker live where they could not plant flowers....only shrubbery, and they still had to run it by the HOA.

HOA's are great for keeping your neighbor's from doing asinine things to their units that you don't like.
HOA's suck when it comes to them stopping you from doing things to your unit that you like/want to do!

I don't know, I don't think I'd like to live in a subdivision or HOA. I don't want to live in a dump and I understand why they have the rules in place, but I like a neighborhood with a little personality. All the subdivisions here look the same, they remind me of that Twilight Zone episode where they're stuck in the doll house neighborhood and keep going around and around on the train just to end up in the same place.

I've only lived in townhome/condo's that had a HOA and I think they were an evil necessity. Some rules included don't hang clothes and towels to dry over your balconies. Sounds dumb but if everybody does that shit it looks ghetto pretty damn quick. A lot of hotels have similar rules. I think HOA's come in to play when you share a community pool and stuff too. Rinse the super freeze, curl crap gel out of your hair before you jump in the pool...typically I don't have a problem with the rules because the general idea is to keep the place respectable, clean and property values what they should be.
We don't belong to a HOA but I wasn't wildly happy when our neighbors hoisted a Budweiser flag on their full size flag pole in their front yard for awhile either. Frat house much? Fortunately they took it down after a few days. Anyway, you buy in to a place that has a HOA and you agree to follow their rules. If they bug you, join the board and try to change them or realize you made a stupid purchase/rental arrangement. Commando Cunt Queen

They have other ridiculous shit too, other than not allowing pink flamingos in the garden or hanging laundry off the balcony. That I can understand, but I wouldn't want to have to wait a month for them to decide if I can re-roof my own house or get new gutters and downspouts.

Hey, I was the person living in the neighborhood where flippers had 3 houses on the market for cheap. I know the importance of market value. I think it's just more likely that you don't want to look at his purple house more than you want resale value.

We don't belong to a HOA but interestingly, I think there was some rule put in place (when the subdivision was built) that you can't fence the front of your yard. I've never thought too much about it but looking around the neighborhood just now, it would look horrible if we all had fencing in our front yards. Depending on the height, the street would look like a god damn fortress.
That said, I wouldn't be on the phone complaining or anything if someone put in a 2 to 2 1⁄2 foot high slated little post fence in their front yard (something unobtrusive). One neighbor has a 4 foot high, and probably 3 foot thick hedge running across the front of her yard. It doesn't bother me in the least but again, I think if would be fugly if a bunch of neighbors followed suit. It could ruin the open feeling of the cul-de-sac. Commando Cunt Queen

My old house I had an HOA. When I bought it they were pretty laid back, inexpensive and took care of the pool and common areas. After I was there about 8 years there had been a lot of turnover with the bubble thing out here and all that. Assholes had come in and no one wanted to serve on the board so they "Outsourced" the management.
The "Management" company is doing this for profit, so the dues went up immediately and they decided "Revenue" was needed, so they hired Nazis that didn't even live there to come around and check your place over for any violations of the new rules they slipped in with no one voting on so they could write Fines and generate cash. I got out of there after 10 years and missed the peak of the bubble by about 45 minutes and $300 on my house, could not have done any better if I tried. So glad I do not have an HOA now, even dealing with the drug dealer that used to live down the street, I knew he wouldn't last forever. Life is good without the Nazis |
