Indiana governor Mike Pence (Republican) is catching a lot of flack for signing a Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) bill into law this week.
I think businesses that refuse service to customers on religious grounds are run by dipshits, personally.
Plus, religious freedom was never taken away, so how can it be restored?
RFRA laws simply give business owners a green light to discriminate without being sued for it, in my view. Still, I personally don't object to the laws.
-If the Jewish deli owner down the street doesn't want me to grab my buns in his shop because he doesn't think I'm kosher -- well fuck him. I don't wanna put more money in his pocket anyway.
-If the Christian uniform retailer doesn't want to sell scrubs to CNAs working at the Planned Parenthood clinic because abortion conflicts with her religious beliefs -- it's her loss, baby. They're cheaper on-line anyway!
-If a restaurant refuses to cater my cousin's bridal shower because the owner thinks lesbians are sinners and she doesn't approve of same sex marriage -- it's her right to refuse service and my right to wink at her and tell her to lick me.
I also think there are probably some very solid arguments for opposing such laws.
What do you think, pray tell?

“We stand united as San Franciscans to condemn Indiana’s new discriminatory law, and will work together to protect the civil rights of all Americans including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals.
Effective immediately, I am directing City Departments under my authority to bar any publicly-funded City employee travel to the State of Indiana that is not absolutely essential to public health and safety. San Francisco taxpayers will not subsidize legally-sanctioned discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people by the State of Indiana.” -- San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee (Democrat)

That's right, FAHQTOO. My mayor thinks your governor is a bigot.
As a result, he will not be sending the SF Rainbow Flag Weavers' County Liaison to the Indiana Corn Huskers Convention this year. Take that!
Mr. Lee's boycott statement is posted on the front page of the sfgov site I use to pay my payroll taxes. When I saw it this morning, I wondered if Mr. Lee plans to boycott the other 30-some states which have similar laws on the books.

I might shed a tear over Mr. Lee not wanting to visit my state because that really hurts my feelings. That fact that Miley, Hillary and Ellen don't want to visit either is even more heartbreaking...I was soooo looking forward to seeing them here.
The fact that 30 other states, and 11 more in waiting, have similar laws, including the federal law makes me not lose too much sleep over this non issue. If people would actually READ the bill, it has nothing to do with what everyone is bitching about.
I will agree that Mike Pence is a total douchebag though, and this bill is only one reason why.

I've read it FAHQTOO (and a few like it).
I think it's funny how some people are so quick to threaten boycott of Indiana when its new state law is content-wise the same as a majority of other states.
Some of the protestors probably just aren't aware of that fact. The others are hypocrites unless they boycott business with every state which has an RFRA law in place.
Anyway, I'm sorry your lifelong dream of seeing Miley Cyrus perform in Indiana has been crushed. You'll just have to see Ted Nugent instead, darn it.

I was wrong above...it's 19 states and 11 states with similar laws. And, the Federal law that was signed by none other than Bill Clinton in 1993.
I'll agree with HotD...don't do business with someone that will discriminate against you for your beliefs or lifestyle. Nowadays, one bad post on social media can bring a business to its knees.

Ehhh...ya win some, ya lose some. Ted is old news...he's been here so many times, I've lost count. He's too weird and extreme for me to give him any more of my money...see how that works. I don't like him anymore so I don't support him anymore.

Is that just a general statement or a shot fired over my bow?

Neither...it's a fact. People are making way too much out of this law. It's gone beyond ridiculous.
I guess it wasn't a big deal when it became a federal law, or a state law for 29 other states. Most of the gays were still in the closet, so no one cared.
If these big businesses want to boycott IN, then they need to boycott the other 29 states also, but they won't. Boycotting Chick-fil-a didn't hurt them one bit, in fact, it helped them...so, fuck them all. Take your business elsewhere, I say.
I do love reading all the comments on various news sites though. The ones that say we should put all the religious nuts in Indiana and then nuke us off the planet are my favorites.
People are "moving" out of Indiana because of this law...and then...people are "moving" to Indiana because of this law.
ETA...Believe it or not, I liked Bill Clinton for the most part. Hillary, not so much...not at ALL!!

I think privately held businesses should have the right not to do business with those they don't approve of. I view it as their loss, the person holding the credit card (or whatever) can give their money to someone who will appreciate their business. I can't imagine turning my nose up at money because I don't like that someone has a same sex partner. That's just dumb, they aren't hurting the gay person, they are affecting their own bottom line.

There's something appealing about that.

Eh..............If a business does not want to do business with anyone all they have to do is overprice the service or item. It's all bullshit to blame religion, sex, race or anything else. The issue is a non issue that people use to say "Look at me"

I see; that's how it works for me too.
Ted is too far over the top for me to take him seriously politically as well.
I don't think I'd buy a ticket to one of his concerts either, but that's partly because I don't like big crowds anyway. I do still love his music though and occasionally listen to him from the comfort of my living room and driver's seat.

Yeah. I wonder if that extends to landlords though. I haven't read it, but I'd be pretty pissed if me and my girlfriend were precluded from renting in a certain apartment complex because the building's owner didn't like our sexual orientation.
Taxi! Taxi?!?!! No taxi for you, shit shoveling faggots.
That said, I couldn't get married in a Catholic church (and it was REALLY pretty) because I wasn't Catholic. Shocking, right? Brazen discrimination against fallen Lutherans.

There was a time Catholics didn't marry outside their faith. It just wasn't done. You used to see a lot of big Catholic families too because birth control wasn't done either.

My sisters b/f was catholic and she was non denominational. They were married in the catholic church with our pastor up at the pulpit doing his thing, after the priest was done doing his thing. I've never heard of anything like that before or since, but I'm not all up with the catholic rules and regulations.

Thats a good thing. As the middle child, I might not be here if Catholics believed in birth control.

It's a good question and I've never found a definitive answer; RFRA laws are rather vague when it comes to such details.
The federal Fair Housing Act protects people from discrimination when they are renting, buying, or securing financing for any housing. The prohibitions specifically cover discrimination because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability and the presence of children. The Fair Housing Act does not specifically cover gay and transgender individuals though.
But, the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development has implemented policies to ensure that its core programs are open to all eligible individuals and families regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status as of 2012.
Opponents fear that RFRA makes it harder for LGBT individuals and families to get government to respond and intervene in cases of alleged sexual-orientation based housing discrimination.
Supporters argue that RFRA is not about licensing discrimination in the state, it's about protecting freedom of religious liberties for businesses (without federal intervention).
