This morning on Fox, Lewandowski said, "what we should be focusing on is the continued lies of the Clinton administration".

It felt like something like this was gonna go down soon. Trump and his spokespersons seemed to me to have been anticipating it and thus targeting Mueller and pointing at Clinton again all week. 'Look over there!', 'Fake news!', 'Not me, YOU!' Anyway, I hope the indictment is unsealed on Monday. Manafort has been under a microscope for months and was reportedly warned to expect an indictment. I agree with you that the indictment is most likely against Manafort for laundering and/or for not registering as a foreign lobbyist. Next likely, in my opinion, is Flynn for not registering as a foreign lobbyist.

I think Flynn is probably going to face some consequence, and there's an outside chance Podesta gets caught up too. Reclassifying foreign money well AFTER you deposited it is still no bueno. A way outside chance, but still.

Yeah, I think it’s a way outside chance too.
The Podesta Group did file with Congress about their activities and then reclassified the filing (with the DOJ) when the root source of the funding was revealed, as far as I can tell. Manafort, on the other hand, didn’t disclose at all. And Flynn, though he did file with Congress, was taking payment from and working directly towards Turkey’s governmental agenda. There’s no way he didn’t know he was lobbying for a foreign government, in my opinion. I think it’s clear that Manafort and Flynn have much greater legal exposure than the Podestas. But, who (aside from the grand jury) knows what Mueller’s team has dug up? We’ll see.

When CNN announced the first Mueller indictments on Friday night, Stone flipped out and went on a Twitter rant. He called them liars and went off on the anchors. He was permanently banned from Twitter. Wonder if Stone is worried about being indicted?

Manafort and Rick Gates indicted for conspiracy against the United States.
The indictment is 12-counts and 32 pages and references money laundering, failure to register as foreign operatives, lying to federal officials, non-disclosure of income, etc... The charges reflect activity through 2017. Gates is a long time business associate of Manafort. He stayed on with the campaign and then worked within the administration after Manafort left (when the Ukraine ledger payment story broke). There is nothing in this first indictment directly related to collusion and there is no reference to others in the Trump campaign or administration.

trump's former foreign policy advisor, George Papadopoulos has pleaded guilty to making false statements to the Feds in regards to his Russian contacts. Hehehe. Only a moron would lie to the Feds. Jesus. I'm reading through the indictment again in order to find the part that states "and others" which indicates to me there are more warrants coming. ETA - Found it. It won't let me copy & paste. It's on page 23. https://www.politico.com/f/?id=0000015f-...735cc70000

I doubt the indictments will stop here too. The indictments won’t directly reference others in the campaign or administration until/unless Mueller’s ready to charge them, in my opinion.
The Popadopolous guilty plea is interesting. He could be a good source of information for the independent investigators.

As you may imagine, there is a great deal of speculation regarding this. He was charged very early this month and it has been kept sealed until today. There are those who believe he's singin' like a bird.

I'm sure anyone who knows anything will talk. That's the purpose of the early indictments usually - to try and squeeze connections that haven't been made yet so the investigation can continue. Threaten a nice stay at a fed prison camp, or maybe just probation if you happen to know anything that can aid the investigation. It's waterboarding without the water or the board for these white collar nudniks who can't walk the straight and narrow.
In Manafort's case though, it looks like he was a main target in the investigation from day one.

Here is George's sealed file. In it the Government agrees to bring to the court's attention at sentencing the Defendants efforts to cooperate with the Government. https://www.justice.gov/file/1007341/download

Wouldn't it serve Manafort to simply remain silent and wait for his pardon?

The campaign tossed him as soon as they realized what a liability he was (he hadn't been fully honest in his disclosures and the vetting was half assed). Notice that while Trump is tweeting things about Hillary/Dems, there's not been support for Manafort anywhere. He's pissed that Manafort put him in such a position - also pissed at people who didn't vet it out better last summer. Truthfully Manafort clearly broke the law trying to hide money. You'll get busted for that almost every time these days. I suspect anyone else who did it close to this investigation is going to go down for it. Also those who perjured themselves. The g-men (and women) don't like being lied to very much. |
