THE HANDMAID'S TALE
#1

Are any of you watching this? I keep hearing about it and I'm thinking about binge watching it. There are only 2 seasons so far. Hulu is having a free 30 day promotion, after that I think it's $7.99. Anyone interested in watching? GoT won't be back until next year :(

I've heard it is a big left wing story that picks on anything right wing or it has a political leaning that detracts from the story line. But I have not seen it although I did watch the movie and it didn't seem that way, the series may be different.

It's based on a book that was published in 1985. I'm debating on whether to buy the book or watch the series.

It's worth binging IMO. Haven't seen the 2nd season yet. It's not one of those I've been waiting to see like Goliath but it held my attention.

Read the book! Then watch.
Can you do that in 30 days?
I watched season 1, it is pretty dark. I watched an episode of season 2 and I couldn't figure out why I would want to watch more, but if you were watching it, I would watch it and discuss it with you.

That doesn't sound good, "I watched an episode of season 2 and I couldn't figure out why I would want to watch more". Depressingly dark? I don't want to watch and be bummed out. I want to feel engaged and looking forward to more. Now I don't know what to do. Having said all that, I think it's fun to watch a series with people, I do it with GoT and I did it with a since cancelled TURN: Washington's Spies.

Well, I have Netflix and Hulu, so pick a show and I will watch it!

The concept of the Handmaids Tale was interesting....How much of it do you know about?

There are different social classes of people and the women wear colors that reflect that. Their rights have been stripped and some are forced into having babies. The world as they knew it has changed. I think I read the book years ago but it's very vague. The only reason I know a little is from things I've read online.

THE HANDMAID'S TALE : The MidWestSpy's opinion would be most interesting.

I did watch all of season 1 by the way. (I don't think that came out in my above posts)

My version of the show synopsis: For some reason the wives of these high powered men cannot have babies-so they have these handmaids, and the handmaids have sex with the husbands, but the wives are there too.
And the handmaids are treated like shit, and then they are prisioners, it sucks, and people who disobey get hung and they stay there for people to walk by them. It is gross.
I don't even know how or why I made it through season 1, now thinking about it.

So......is there a show on hulu or netflix you want to watch? I just finished re watching Mad Men again and need/want something else to watch now.

If you're looking to just chill Love Child  -- no politics or laser focus required -- give Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee on Netflix a try.  It's cool listening to funny people talk about random everyday shit at the diners.  The episodes are really short so it's good binge watching.

I also really like Live From Daryl's House on YouTube TV.  Daryl Hall is amazing.  He and his band can play and sing just about anything with the great guest musicians almost as well (and in some cases better) than the originals.  Really good jams.

I binged on it yesterday while I was cleaning the house.  This version of Hall and Oates' "Rich Girl" with Wyclef Jean rapping on his hover board was awesome, I thought.

Both of the shows have at least 5 seasons of episodes.

Daryl’s had some great artists in with him.

I personally love his rendition of ‘Wait For Me’ with Todd Rundgren.

First season is some of the best TV out there but you can't spend much time thinking about the specifics. They have complete and intricate rituals that should have evolved over time but Gilead has only been in existence for a few years when we join the narrative so that took me out of the story a few times. And it does hit close to home so in that regard, I think you'd enjoy seeing our country through a dark mirror. Second season is it's own story since they ran out of Atwood's book content and you can kind of tell that they're floundering a little to keep the show going. Still worth a watch though.

I really liked all of the collaborations with Rundgren too.

I think my favorite clip from Daryl's House is still their version of 'The Weight' by The Band, played in tribute to Hall's musical director T Bone Wolk after he passed away.

'Ain't No Sunshine' with Finger Eleven is a close second.

Okay, back to The Handmaid's Tale.  I've never seen it -- sounds dark but good.
