Tessa Majors, 18, moved from Charlottesville, Virginia to NYC back in August.
She was in her freshman year at Barnard University, an all-girls school.

Sadly, Tessa, a musician and aspiring journalist, was brutally stabbed to death at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Morningside Park in Manhattan, near Barnard. Rest in peace.
Tessa was stabbed in the stomach, face and neck before she crawled to a security booth, where she died.

Police have detained and interviewed a slew of teenagers in relation to the murder.
Yesterday, they arrested a 13-year-old boy who reportedly confessed to killing Tessa when she fought back while he and his friends were trying to mug her.
The boy, who has not been named, was wearing clothing that matched descriptions of Tessa's attacker. I don't know yet if the descriptions came from eye witnesses or surveillance footage.
Anyway, police are reportedly searching for two other boys who they believe participated in killing Tess.
Such a violent and brazen crime to be committed by a 13-year-old. If his alleged confession is verified, he will quite likely be tried as an adult.
Hopefully NYPD will track down anyone else involved and get them off the streets quickly.

Suspect Status
The 13-year-old boy who was arrested in Tessa's case is not believed to be the suspect who stabbed the 18-year-old college freshman.
He is cooperating with authorities and is expected to be charged as a juvenile with second-degree felony murder, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon on Tuesday. He's being held without bail.
The boy told police that he and his two 14-year-old friends were planning to mug a man in the park, but decided against it. Then, Tessa came along.
He says he watched as his friends robbed Tessa (who fought back and bit one of the suspects). Then, he says, he saw feathers fly from Tessa's down coat as one of them stabbed her.
One of the 14-year-old boys implicated has been detained and interviewed. It's unclear whether he will be charged, according to officials.
The other 14-year-old is believed to be the one who stabbed Tessa to death. He has not been apprehended yet.

1. Politicization
Tessa's family issued a public objection to NYPD Union President Ed Mullins stating during a Podcast interview that Tessa may have been in the park to buy weed.
Mullins is a vocal opponent of NYC's relaxing its marijuana policing policies under mayor De Blasio and was politicizing Tessa's murder to support his agenda.
He apologized to the family and claims he was not 'victim blaming' Tessa.

2. Suspects
A 14-year-old boy implicated in the 13-year-old suspect's confession was detained and questioned late last week. The 14-year-old was with his lawyer during questioning and made no statements, according to police sources.
Law enforcement officials declined to charge him at this time, so he was released. This teen is not believed to be the person who stabbed Majors and is reportedly still a suspect.

The other 14-year-old suspect is on the run........again. NYPD is refusing to answer questions about why the teen was not picked up by a police officer and what exactly happened. (Almost all of the information in the media is coming from unnamed LE sources rather than direct statements.)
The boy was being driven to the police station by an adult yesterday to be questioned when he reportedly bolted out of the vehicle and took off running.
This suspect is believed to be the one who fatally stabbed Tessa.

Court Appearance / New Details
The 13-year-old suspect appeared in family court yesterday with his attorney and his aunt and uncle present. He is still the only one of the three suspects in custody.
A detective recounted the boy's confession for the court and revealed that there is a grainy surveillance video from the park showing the attack.

The video shows the 13-year-old being at the scene of the crime (in Morningside Park, pictured above), but does not show him putting his hands on Tessa.

When criticized by the boy's attorney for questioning him without a lawyer present, the detective said that the suspect had offered up (no less than ten times) that he did not know what his friends were going to do before it happened.
The detective also said that the boy admitted he picked up a red-handled knife and handed it to one of his friends before Tessa was stabbed to death (after she refused to hand over her property).
The judge denied the defense's request to have the suspect released to his aunt and uncle, stating that the suspect admitted to having the intent to participate in a robbery and that there was a high probability of re-offending.
The suspect will remain in juvenile detention until at least January 2
nd, when the next hearing is scheduled.

I don't know what's going on with this case. It's weird.
Today, LE finally apprehended the 14-year-old boy who had fled on his way to being questioned and successfully evaded capture for 2 weeks.
He was taken in for questioning and then released with his lawyer 2 hours later; no explanation as to why has been provided.
LE says the investigation is still very active and it seems they haven't cleared either of the two boys who they've taken into custody and then released.
The 13-year-old who confessed and named his two 14-year-old friends in the murder of Tessa is still in custody.
