JOGGING WHILE BLACK
#1
Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was running down a street in the city’s Satilla Shores neighborhood early in the afternoon of Feb. 23 when he caught the attention of Gregory McMichael. A former cop and investigator with the local district attorney’s office, McMichael was sitting in his son Travis’ front yard.

“Travis, the guy is running down the street, let’s go,” Gregory told his son, according to a police report obtained by The New York TimesThe men, who are white, said they suspected Arbery, who is black, might be connected to recent thefts in their neighborhood. They grabbed weapons—a shotgun and a .357 magnum—and followed Arbery in Travis McMichael’s pickup truck, which bears the Gadsden flag and its “Don’t tread on me” motto. A neighbor, William Bryan, joined the McMichaels in pursuing Arbery, according to police.

Soon after, the trio confronted Arbery. According to Gregory McMichael’s account in the police report, Arbery turned toward Travis McMichael’s truck as he stopped and exited, and struck Travis. A video that circulated widely on Tuesday—and that Arbery’s aunt, Thea Brooks, said depicted her nephew—shows a black man and white man struggling both on and off-screen as shots ring out. But the video’s provenance, and whether it was the same footage shot by Bryan that was cited by a local prosecutor—who initially declined to press charges in connection with the shooting—was unclear.

“Travis fired a shot and then a second later there was a second shot,” the police report states. At least two shots struck Arbery, the Glynn County Coroner’s Office told The Daily Beast last week.

Arbery died in the middle of the street where he fell, and no one has been arrested or charged with a crime. But on Tuesday, District Attorney Tom Durden—the third prosecutor to tackle the killing—announced that he would present the case to a grand jury.

I hope the grand jury indicts the McMichaels and the third person involved in chasing down Arbery, confronting him with guns, and ultimately killing him.  This shit really pisses me off.

The trio was not standing their ground and it was not self-defense, in my opinion.  Arbery wasn't armed and he wasn't carrying stolen goods while running/jogging down the street.

Whether he was involved in past robberies or not, Arbery reacted like I think most people would in the same situation -- he attempted to fight back / defend himself.

The shooter, at least, should to be prosecuted -- based on the facts known now.   If there's more to the story, let the jury hear it and decide.

The fact that the senior McMichael is a former law enforcement officer likely plays into it, in my opinion.

As noted in the posted articles, two DA officials had to remove themselves from the case due to conflicts of interest.

I'm very interested to learn more about the video of the McMichaels (right) confronting and assaulting Arbery (left).  Who filmed the incident and who handed the video over to police?

Was it the publicly unidentified third person involved, or perhaps someone who was shown the video by that third person or one of the McMichaels who then turned it over?   Or, possibly a passerby with no involvement in the incident?

Whomever shot the video was obviously a witness (or accomplice).  I hope that person will cooperate truthfully with law enforcement.

Anyway, it's good to see this case gaining more attention and more airing of demands for investigation/justice.

Often when I see stories like this I think about all the crap that must have went down and unnoticed before cell phone cameras.

The former cop & his son didn't seem too concerned about the person video taping it.

Cell phone/surveillance video really helps in these kinds of cases, and in cases where police officers unjustly kill people and then float false narratives in attempt to cover their asses.

It appears that the video showing the killing of Ahmaud Arbery was taken by someone driving behind the McMichaels' truck.  I'm so glad the incident was caught on tape and leaked to the public.

The public's demands for justice prompted law enforcement to take action...................finally. Tonight, the McMichaels were arrested for murder and aggravated assault -- 72 days after Ahmaud was shot to death.

The grand jury isn't scheduled to convene until June due to Coronavirus.  I'm not sure if father and son will be held behind bars until then.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) is set to provide more details at a press conference tomorrow.

I am delighted to wake-up to the news they've been arrested for murder!

It's unfortunate that it took all this time for it to get this far. That video has been everywhere the past couple of days. It shouldn't have taken that to bring about their arrests. The right thing should have been done immediately, but the murderers are white & the man they killed is black and racism is alive and well in America. Given the father is a former LEO probably played a role as well. I hope their filthy white trash asses pay the price in spades.

Update

A day after the arrests of father and son Gregory and Travis McMichael in the killing of Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia, the head of a state law-enforcement agency said a neighbor who recorded a video of the shooting is also being investigated.

The agency's director, Vic Reynolds, said at a news conference Friday that the neighbor is William Bryan (pictured below).

Reynolds added that the video is a "very important piece of evidence."

Alan Tucker ^, a criminal defense attorney in Brunswick, said in a statement Thursday that he released the video because "there was entirely too much speculation, rumor, false narratives and outright lies surrounding the event."

"My sole purpose in releasing the video was absolute transparency because my community was being ripped apart by erroneous accusations and assumptions," said Tucker, adding that he had not been retained by anyone for the case.

Tucker did not respond to a request for comment on why he had the video.

Arbery, who would have turned 26 today, was shot to death on Feb. 23 in Brunswick, a coastal city about midway between Savannah and Jacksonville, Florida, after being chased by Gregory McMichael, 64, and Travis, 34, in their pickup truck.

Arbery's family says he was out jogging, while the McMichaels have claimed they thought he was a burglar, according to the Glynn County police report.

The McMichaels said they armed themselves and chased then confronted Arbery because they believed Arbery might have a gun and they intended to make a citizen's arrest, the police report said.

Asked about the possibility that the McMichaels could be prosecuted for a hate crime, Reynolds noted that Georgia is one of few states without a hate-crime law. South Carolina, Arkansas and Wyoming also have no such laws, according to a U.S. Justice Department website.

I don't condone what happened and know there are still "good ol boys" out there a lot of what happened previous to the video has been undisclosed or not properly explained.
