I spent five months on a working holiday in Lompoc california. The family i stayed with tarmacced drives for a living, one a month. For three weeks they surfed, had parties, and ate out for breakfast, which is unheard of in England. Eating out for breakfast. They made enough to do that with no financial worries.
They asked if i wanted my green card, i could have earned eighteen thousand a year part time, washing dishes and skivvying in a restaurant. I was in my early twenties and qualified in my proffession, earning twenty one thousand a year. Who would not choose USA.? I did not, but thats another story.
My point is, how could the USA go from that to what you have today?
I have my view, but thats not the point.
Decide for yourself. None of it is good.

Look at the polarization that has roughly half of the electorate defending what's being done. The proper term for that is divide and conquer, which is laid out in a scientific manner in The Art of War.
I'll be very surprised if we have another presidential election.

The internet has brought people closer. Good and bad and that's not necessarily a good thing. It's way to much crap and people have lost their moral compass.

$21,000 a year is not enough to live on, unless you are in your teens or early 20's and living at home and don't have any bills. What year was this?

It was the early 80s. Thats pounds not dollars. Rose through the ranks, got well paid, eventually.
