I love down comforters, but then you have to put a duvet over them which I find to be pain in the ass to take off and put back on.

The mattress pads I look at don't seem comfortable enough. And I hate foam.
Do people here have those on their bed? Seems none just has a mattress anymore, it's all loaded up with multiple mattresses and foam pads.
I didn't know this until I just went looking for something for you and I discovered mattress toppers. They may be of interest to you. This particular one is found on Amazon, but if you google mattress toppers you will probably find a variety of stores and prices.
