I read the graphic novel again (the one in OP's picture above) and loved it. I will be very curious to see how it becomes a movie and what they keep actually in the film. It is a VERY involved story and sometimes a lot can be lost in translation to a movie.

Apparently they have filmed a version of the tale within a tale tales of the black freighter which was going to be interwoven into the narrative of the film just like the book but it fucked up the running time.
So its rumoured that a full version of tales of the black freighter will be included as an extra on the DVD!

OP you are correct. We know a lot about this movie because Warner Brothers contacted our company about some legal rights to the name of the bar in the movie, which is the same name as one of our companies (and we hold the trademarks). So we have worked with them 2 times for legal releases for the movie and video games. From what I have been told they are trying to stay as true as possible to the story, but the story within in the story will probably be cut considerably due to length. It is amazing how many daily showings you lose if a movie is 1.5 hours long vs 2 hours long vs 2.5 hours and so on. Comes down to how many theaters you can get it in and how many showing a day to make the most money. it is always about the money in the end.
