Better than pepper spray!
#1
Hey LC, remember your "womens' safety" thread at FG that spot and koan took a shit all over? I wish I could post this in there, it's some great info.

From an email:

If you don't have a gun, here's a more humane way to wreck someone's
evil plans for you. Did you know this? I didn't. I never really thought
of it before. I guess I can get rid of the baseball bat ...

On the heels of a break in and beating that left an elderly woman in
Toledo dead, self defense experts have a tip that could save your life.

Val Glinka teaches self-defense to students at Sylvania Southview High
School. For decades, he's suggested putting a can of WASP and hornet spray near
your door or bed.

Glinka says, "This is better than anything I can teach them."

Glinka considers it inexpensive, easy to find, and more effective than
mace or pepper spray. The cans typically shoot 20 to 30 feet; so if
someone tries to break into your home, Glinka says "spray the culprit in
the eyes". It's a tip he's given to students for decades.

It's also one he wants everyone to hear. If you're looking for
protection, Glinka says look to the spray.

"That's going to give you a chance to call the police; maybe get out."
Maybe even save a life.

A friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area was
concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them
when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police
department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can
of WASP spray instead.

The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a
lot more accurate, while with pepper spray, they have to get too close
to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an
attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can
on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people
like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for
home protection. Thought this was interesting and might be of use. =

you know what? i think that's an excellent idea. the pepper spray sold to the public (like at walmart) is weaker than police-issue. and some people are impervious to it. we had to get sprayed at academy, i got 3 shots to the eyes of police-issue OC spray and barely broke a sweat. my big male classmates were ripping off their own clothes and rolling on the ground screaming and crying. the LT was astonished, but he used it as an object lesson...sometimes that shit does not work on some people, and it will just PISS THEM OFF!
i always state this caveat however...do not use any weapon that you are not prepared to have taken from you and used against you. know your limits and abilities and strength.

and i do remember those 2 assholes calling me a 'fear-monger' for posting safety tips.

I just reread part of that thread the other day... remember spot using Pam's daughter's assault in one of his long fucking objections to the thread? Pam was seriously pissed... but she manages to play nice with them to this day. I couldn't do that... or want to.

I've seen that about the wasp spray before.
I would suggest to not get the wal-mart cheapo wasp spray either, I sprayed down a nest under my front porch this fall just before I had to crawl into the crawl space to do some work. All it did was make for a bunch of pissed off bees.

I like that! But if you use a lighter with the wasp spray you can cause much more pain, you can see them better in the dark, and you get a new sofa from the insurance, that way you do not feel so bad when you put a bullet in their brain to put them out of their misery.

people who have cars with alarms/panic-button fobs, could keep the keys/fob next to bed...in case of emergency hit the button, and the car alarm would hopefully alert neighbors to call 911 for help. or it might scare away a burglar. i would first test to see if it set off alarm from any area of home.

Just a little advice , read the label directions on the can .

do you see what it says under uses ?

that is grounds for a lawsuit and the asshole will win because of it .

don't believe everything you read or someone tells you.

on rare occasions criminals have won in civil court. but most jurisdictions allow a homeowner to defend their property and themselves if they feel imminent harm/death is likely. some jurisdictions have nullified the 'duty to retreat' statutes.

Just let the damn dogs out on the fucker.

JB - here in NJ criminals will always win when they break into your home and you defend yourself. If that fucker breaks a window to enter my home illegally and cuts himself on the window he broke for the reason of trespass/robbery - I AM LIABLE for his injuries.

Nope, better to let the dogs out and have at him.

Even in this state trespassing is not illegal until the person has been warned in the presence of a LEO.

I agree with the dogs but I never let them out on someone , My Rotties think I live in their house no one comes in other than My wife or me.

oh and the cat , they love our cat .

Because in the Socialist Republic of NJ the criminal's rights have become more important than those of the law abiding, home owning citizen. It gets even better when they throw in the race card - the liberals bend over backwards to make sure things are not done to disenfranchise the criminal!

Throw in a greedly lawyer or two who know how to twist the law and you - the law abiding citizen who only wants to protect themselves - are ripe for the pickin's.

I only joke about the dogs too. Too dangerous to do that with my guys.
It would be nice to let my guys out on them though... they'd each grab and ankle and turn the fucker into an wishbone. I have pit bulls..... big ol' softies until I give a signal ::sneaky::

The cats rule the dogs here too. Funny how an itty bitty cat can bring down the big bad Rottie or Pit with one sly glance or swipe of the paw? ::lol::

this is them with their car tire - the black one is the gentle one making all that noise. The brindle is the dangerous one - he is quiet, too quiet.

Now, picture that tire a burglar! And yes, I am very careful when people come over to crate the dangerous dog.

Yep... their personalities come through loud and clear. I kept waiting for the black dog to get too close to the brindle, but it looks like he's learned to give the other dog space. Brindle has that sideways evil-eye. lol

That's what you have to watch for when dealing with aggressive dogs. They get real quiet and real still and look at you from the corner of their eye. That means 'don't fuck with me... no seriously...'

Black = Daisy = our lil' puddin'. She's sweet as pie but has taken to savaging the older dog due to his increasing age and lower status in the 'pack'.

Daisy wouldn't even protect us she's so friendly! She will however attack the brindle if he gets aggressive with someone at the door. Aggressive meaning barking or wanting attention.
Daisy has lopped off a chunk of each of the Brindle's ears.

Daisy thinks the world is her for her and all the people in it want to be her friend. She will take a house guest by the hand and drag them to the closet where her treats are so they can give her some. She's selectively stupid and just all around adorable.

Brindle = Goliath = stinky. We rescued him from a very abusive family. I am his favorite person and at the age of 16 now, he will still give his dying breath to protect me. This is also Matt's dog. He came with Matt but since I'm home all day, alliances have switched.

Goliath does not give a crossed glance, he does not bristle, he does not growl nor show his teeth. He just interprets and acts. This is what makes him dangerous.

He is like this because he was abused by humans and me and Matt are the first people to respect him, treat him with kindness and not fear him. To him we are the next best thing since meat.

He IS a kind dog, he does have a few people that he respects and we trust with but for the most part, people see pit bull and instantly think they're going to get bit. Goliath is highly intelligent, more so than any dog I've met and he will pick up on your unease and continually put himself between me (or matt) and the "danger".
He's been professionally trained and will obey commands on a hand signal but his trainer would not guarantee that this dog would never bite no matter the training. This is because he does not give a signal and is highly overprotective of us.

This dog is like this because he was caged up in his own waste for the first two years of his life with abusive people who used to beat him, each other etc. He attacks arms and only arms.

If you go to shake hands, hug, or move toward me fast, he gets between us. If he does not know you, he'll go for the arm.

You can't be a stranger and put your hands hidden in a sleeve or pocket. He gets uneasy.

He's a perfect gentleman on a leash outside the home though! But it all comes down to his abuse in the first two years of his life. He just has no trust in people who seem "fidgety" to him.
He loves going to the vet, staying at the kennel when we go away (he loves the kennel owner) and car rides are his favorite activity.

He's now 16, waddles, lumpy, smelly, gassy and yet mentally alert and youthful. It's going to be hard to see him go. He's been the most loyal, gentlemanly dog I've ever had. Ever willing to please and a fast learner. I dont think there will ever be another dog like him. It's a shame those people fucked him over to the point I have to be always careful with him.

Yeah, it breaks my heart when people fuck up animals like that, and it happens all too often. He's very lucky to have spent the majority of his life with caring people like you.

When I was doing dog training, some folks called me in to work with their rottie pups. As I was getting ready to leave, the folks put the two pups in the 'laundry room' and started tossing them raw chicken. I was aghast. I asked what they were doing and they said "Raw meat makes them mean"..... fucking idiots. Of course, I educated them on that subject, as well as the dangers of feeding chicken bones to their dogs. I wasn't invited back. Poor dogs.

My asswipe ex used to feed his guard dogs gun powder to make them 'mean'.

Raw chicken wings including the bones are OK for dogs. It's the cooked bones and the bigger ones that are not soft enough to digest.

Raw meat of any sort is actually healthy for dogs and not in any way going to make them 'mean'.

Goddamn people are stupid.

I didn't know that the bone thing only applied to cooked chicken (makes sense though, since dogs will eat birds) but if for no other reason, I would never feed dogs raw chicken because of salmonella. I mean, I guess it would be ok if it was a chicken from your own back yard, but commercial chicken has high incidence of salmonella in it. I actually lost a dog to salmonella poisoning one time, because she got into the trash and ate some raw chicken. It was horrible.

The things people believe about making dogs 'mean' though are just horrifying. The truth is, if your dog loves you, it's more likely to protect you than any of the 'old wives tales' about making them 'mean'.
