Ya know.....google is OK but it really never replaces a cool book. The internet does not really go into detail on many things. Generalization is rampant and nobody wants to do any copyright infringement with anything. Try getting a detailed picture of the parking brake assembly for a 1974 car and you will see. Even a Chiltons book sucks and there is nothing better than the right book to lay down like a towel on the table.
Anyways let me find that picalilly recipe. Its from the 1930's and works like a charm. I think in a local publication where the old bitties wrote it down. Maybe I will just scan it verses re-typing it. I only like pickling the small cukes. usually only 2-3" long. The big ones are best in a vegetable pie. You can freeze those, and buy 10 crusts for 20.00 or make your own for like 7.00. The bigitch does it all the time.

cucumber pie? blech.
some of those old-fashioned cookbooks by old biddies and church ladies are the best. in fact, the absolute best and flakiest pie crust is made with good old lard. screw your arteries.

well this is enough to make me give up gardening! i don't even want to know about his root veg.
Mr Hill, 53, has grown a row of monster vegetables, the biggest of which is 5ft across and will weigh 80lb when it's ready to cut. Mechanic Mr Hill also grows onions, carrots and cucumbers in the rear garden of his home in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.

my pretty flowers today~~what do i do with the sunflowers (they are almost a foot across!) that are dying, take them in and dry them for the seeds? i have no idea.
i have to get my butt out there SOON and cut all my HUGE sage to dry.

Take your fucking sunflowers and husk the cocksuckers, put them in some godamn sea salt water. soak them son-of-a-bitches overnight. strain the shit outta them in a fucking collander. Then bake the little bastards in an oven at about 388 deg. Until they start turning brown like a fucking beaner from downtown. Let them cool then pop them into your mouth. Ta-da crunchy fuckin salty sun fucking flowers.

Brighten Up Your Winter Garden With Colorful Berries............
Just because the trees are bare and there is snow on the ground doesn't mean that your garden has to become a winter wasteland. A well-planned garden will provide year-round interest and visual treats. Many evergreens and hardy ornamental grasses can be quite stunning in the colder months.

teethmarks of rotten squirrel!
the pumpkin in bottom pic is 1100 lbs. grown by a local. he must not have squirrels!

I really like holly. I stuff it, along with evergreen branches, in several of the planters around my main entrance. Mistletoe grows in the tops of the trees here & we literally shoot it off the tree, it doesn't last too long though so, I prefer to hang the faux stuff instead.

well i guess the gardening year is over. i harvested most of the sage to dry, rosemary will take a freeze, then it has to come inside. i wish it were as big as the sage~
this is the view from my bedroom window this morning. only 2 pumpkins left out there, the dozen or so picked ones are in the basement to soon line the walkway for halloween. the cold has killed the vines. the wind was high, and you can see all the apples that fell to the ground, i'll collect them to save for the deer this winter. i hate to see so many wasted on the ground. |
