The Dutchman suspected of killing Natalee Holloway in Aruba will confess to the murder of another student last year in Lima, his lawyer has said.
Peruvian prosecutors have charged Joran Van der Sloot with first-degree murder after last year's killing of 21-year-old Stephany Flores, a Peruvian girl the defendant met at a casino.
Van der Sloot, 24, who was already widely known as the prime suspect in the unresolved 2005 disappearance in Aruba of American teenager Natalee Holloway, could now face 30 years behind bars in a Peruvian jail.
In a motion written on Monday, Defence attorney Luis Jiminez Navarro said his client was willing to make a confession but would stop short of admitting to anything which would result in a longer sentence.

(CNN) -- Joran van der Sloot will stand trial beginning January 6 on robbery and murder charges related to a 21-year-old woman's death, a Peruvian court announced Friday.
The timetable from the Superior Court of Lima came days after a panel of judges ruled against having the Dutch national face an even more stringent slate of charges, as the victim's family members had requested. Instead, he will face the original charges levied against him -- which, if he is convicted on all counts, could lead to a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.
Van der Sloot is accused of killing Stephany Flores in his Lima hotel room last year. Police say he took money and bank cards from her wallet and fled to Chile, where he was arrested a few days later.
He was charged in September with "qualified murder" and simple robbery, which carry sentences of 28 years and two years, respectively.
The victim's family asked a three-judge panel for a charge akin to aggravated murder, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
The panel ruled against the family and in favor of prosecutors' original indictment.
Van der Sloot's defense attorney, Luis Jimenez Navarro, then told InSession that the judge's decision was a major victory for his client. If van der Sloot is found guilty and sentenced to the maximum penalty, under Peru's jail reduction credits, he might serve only a third of the term. As of early next month, van der Sloot will have spent 18 months in Peruvian prison.
Jimenez has previously said that his client could confess to a charge of simple homicide.
Despite the panel's decision, the Flores family has remained hopeful that van der Sloot will face more serious charges. A family attorney said that because of the way the justice system works in Peru, the charges could change once the trial begins.

(CNN) -- Joran van der Sloot goes on trial Friday in Peru, ready to admit to killing a 21-year-old woman while planning to fight more stringent charges that could land him more time in prison, his lawyer said.
edit to add
(CNN) -- Joran van der Sloot on Friday asked for more time to "reflect" on what plea he will make during his murder trial.
Earlier in the day, his attorney said van der Sloot was expected to plead guilty to all charges, but when it came time to tell the court, he asked instead for more time.
When asked for a plea by the magistrates, van der Sloot said he wanted to give a "sincere confession" -- a type of guilty plea that can qualify him for a reduced sentence -- but did not agree with all of the charges against him. When the judge asked for clarification, he said he needed more time to decide his plea.
The trial is postponed until Wednesday, when van der Sloot is expected to finally give his plea. He is charged with "qualified murder" and simple robbery in the killing of 21-year-old Stephany Flores.

URGENT: An Alabama judge said he'll sign an order declaring Natalee Holloway legally dead, more than six years after the teenager disappeared on the Caribbean island of Aruba.
Judge Alan King announced that at a hearing Thursday requested by the teen's father, David Holloway. The father told the judge in September he believed his daughter had died and he wanted to stop paying her medical insurance and use her college fund for her brother.
Thursday's hearing was set before the prime suspect questioned in Holloway's disappearance, Dutchman Joran van der Sloot, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Peru to the 2010 murder of a woman there.
Natalee Holloway disappeared on a high school graduation trip May 30, 2005. She was last seen leaving a bar with van der Sloot. Her body was never found.

Finally, that smug arrogant smirk was wiped off his face, if at least, for a little while!! Sentenced to 28 years and $74,000 restitution to the Flores family. My only hope is that someone kicks his teeth in while in prison!

the sentencing went on for over 2 interminable hours. joran was so uncomfortable, constantly wiping his face, sweating bullets, very nervous. it was hot as hell in court.
he also expected a much lesser sentence since he confessed.

Van der Sloot told the court he reserves the right to appeal the conviction and sentence.
Due to time already served, the judges said van der Sloot's sentence would end in June 2038. But under Peru's penal system, Van der Sloot could become eligible for parole after serving half of the sentence with good behavior, including work and study.

this stupid woman got taken for a ride.
NewsCore
LAKE CITY, Fla. -- Convicted killer Joran van der Sloot is still trying to get money from his self-confessed "guardian angel" despite the Florida woman resigning from his case.
Mary Hamer, from Lake City, Fla., already paid around $100,000 toward the 24-year-old Dutchman's legal fees before issuing a resignation letter Sunday that said she would no longer support him financially in his Peruvian case.
Van der Sloot was jailed for 28 years after he pleaded guilty to murdering 21-year-old Stephany Flores in his Peru hotel room in 2010.
But despite Hamer's letter, a source told RadarOnline.com that van der Sloot was still "manipulating" her to provide him with more funds for legal fees and paying off prison staff.
In a letter addressed to US President Barack Obama , Peruvian president Ollanta Humala, the Flores family and Holloway's mother, Hamer wrote that she is broke after paying the killer's legal fees and outlined her fears that he will die of a drug overdose or be murdered in jail.
"I, Mary Hamer, officially and formally am resigning from my spiritual and civil rights advocacy work on behalf of Joran van der Sloot," she wrote. "The US government and Peru have won the battle. I lose. I accept defeat."
She added, "I have sacrificed my life's savings and I am now poor. I have risked death threats ... I fear that Joran van der Sloot will die of a drug overdose or that he will be murdered by a guard or another prisoner in the Peruvian prison system; I will hold the Peruvian and US governments responsible if Mr. van der Sloot dies during his 28-year sentence."
Hamer maintains that van der Sloot did not commit murder but instead "manslaughter with Stephany Flores's provocation" while he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and "years of destroyed self-esteem."

I actually watched this woman on Anderson's daytime talk show. She was on twice. If you can find the episodes online, they are worth a watch. She is so delusional it's actually painful to watch.

(CNN) -- The process to extradite Joran van der Sloot from Peru to the United States to face criminal charges has begun, according to Maximo Altez, van der Sloot's Peruvian attorney.
Peruvian judges in January sentenced the Dutchman to 28 years in prison for the murder in 2010 of Stephany Flores. He is also the prime suspect in the disappearance of American Natalee Holloway. U.S. authorities want to try van der Sloot on charges of extortion and wire fraud in the Holloway case.
According to court documents obtained through Altez, a Peruvian judge has approved a U.S. request for provisional detention. This is the first step in the extradition process between Peru and the United States. The document says a formal extradition request has yet to be submitted, but will follow.
The document names the U.S. Embassy as a party in the proceedings. InSession reached out Monday for comment but did not receive a response. The Peruvian Justice Ministry also did not return a request for comment.
The only hold-up to the extradition is van der Sloot's appeal, which should be finished in about a month, Altez said.
While he faces another 28 years behind bars in Peru, the prime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway may be freed just long enough to face trial in the U.S.
Joran van der Sloot is one step closer to being carted to the United States in an extradition that could bring him face-to-face with Ms Holloway's mother, seven years after 18-year-old Natalee vanished in Aruba.
But legal hurdles - including van der Sloot’s appeal for his Peru murder conviction - will keep the process from going through immediately.
Van der Sloot’s lawyer Maximo Altez told CNN: 'I think he will be extradited within the next three months'.
Mr Altez added that if van der Sloot is convicted in America, he will be returned to Peru to serve out the remainder of his sentence there, and then shipped back to the U.S. to serve whatever sentence he may receive in the extortion case.

A Peruvian court has ruled that convicted murderer Joran van der Sloot will be extradited to the U.S. to face trial allegedly linking him to the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.
Not before, however, he has served his 28-year jail sentence in Peru for the murder of Stephany Flores.
The decision by the Peruvian Supreme Court means that the family of Holloway, who disappeared in 2005 and has since been declared dead, will have to wait many more agonising years before they will see van der Sloot on trial.

this link at radar claims the woman is his current girlfriend although she denies that. but because she is catholic an abortion is out of the question.... ( but sleeping with a convicted murderer is okay with her!). http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/20...ny-ramirez

Wedding Bells for Joran Van der Sloot?
When Van der Sloot was first apprehended in Peru, the HLN talking heads explained how terrible the prison conditions are there, how miserable he would be, how the Peruvians don't mess around and it would be extra hard on him since he killed one of their own who was the daughter of a prominent businessman, how he would finally be getting what he deserved, etc...
A year and a half later, he's been sentenced to only 28 years for killing Stephany Flores, he's eligible for parole in 7.5 years, he's reportedly learning Spanish and getting along quite well in his new lodging, his girlfriend comes to visit frequently, and he's just filed a petition to be married. I don't know if he'd be eligible for conjugal visits if he's allowed to marry; probably. Un-'effin-believable.

His lawyer is so full of shit.
Snip:
On Wednesday, Van der Sloot's lawyer, Maximo Altez, filed a motion to reduce his client's sentence, claiming Van der Sloot worked with authorities during the investigation and that his rights were violated by police during his arrest.
Altez said Van der Sloot has asked prison authorities for permission to marry behind bars.
"He is a person who has changed ... he wants to rebuild his life, wants to be a new person," said Altez.
The lawyer said that the Supreme Court will rule on Van der Sloot's marriage request in about 10 days and if he is granted permission to wed, the ceremony could take place 15 days from now.
While Altez would not disclose the name of the bride, he said of Van der Sloot, "He wants to marry, change his life, start a new life."
According to reports, Van der Sloot's fiancée is a Peruvian woman named Leydi Figueroa Uceda who visits him in jail often. Altez denies speculation that Uceda had a son with Van der Sloot.
