I think if I tried to home school my kids they'd be dumb as dirt. I just don't have the patience or discipline to do that. But, I'm hugely involved in my kid's education. I know all the teachers by name, I volunteer a ton of time, I know if/when my kids do well (or don't) on an assignment. The PTA alternately quivers and thanks me when they see me.
I don't think you have to home school to be involved.

I do not think that school is a "social" experiment. Maybe I should have used another word other than socializing. Just like any vocation they may later have in life, they have to learn to get along with others, accept differences in others, realize that everyone's opinion differs, respect different races, learn teamwork, etc. We all know that this is important throughout life.
I should mention that my school is a "melting pot" for lack of a better word. It consists of the wealthiest, those on welfare, Whites - Blacks - Hispanics - Chinese - Japanese, two-parent families, one-parent families, straight parents, homosexual parent(s), mentally or physically handicapped, etc. Plus remember, my only experience is with elementary kids in a one-horse town with a population of approximately 6,000.

We do not have a union in my town. The key word is "tenure". If one teaches for five years, then he/she is on tenure, and it's next to impossible to fire him/her. As I stated in a previous post, promoting them is a way to remove them from the classroom. That's how we got our principal.
Username, parental involvement is wonderful. Before teaching I was involved in every aspect I could be at by two sons' school. As a teacher, I found that the parents who were really involved had children who performed MUCH better than those who wouldn't even take the time for a parent/teacher conference. Keep volunteering and good for you.

Parents fucking suck nowadays. THAT is what is wrong with the schools, shitty kids that can't sit down and STFU so everybody can learn something. Parents send kids to school that have no fucking manners, no sense of the Golden Rule, no home training, and no previous learning that they need to be successful. Schools are daycares for 80% of the kids in this country. Free daycare so mom can sleep late.
My teachers didn't put on a fucking song and dance everyday. They had the page numbers posted on the board and they graded your work when you were done. I learned. People want schools to be like a night at the theatre now because they raised stupid fucking kids that have to be entertained all day.
Half of the parents in this country are just as stupid as their children. THAT is truth. People don't like it, but it's true. If you don't believe me, go to the grocery store. There are tons of stupid fucking people there.
