If you can't do it, or you cringe, or you have a physical, visceral reaction (fear or shame): You might have a little psychological damage due to your religious upbringing. What other personal belief can cause such a reaction?

As I said in another thread, we use the fear of eternal damnation to scare kids into religion. We start when they are young and still developing so that it is good and rubbed-in by adulthood.

You should be able to say those words, they are just words, without much reaction. Most people can't. I will let the love of my family affect me in that manner, but not the fear of some bullshit somebody else made up a few thousand years ago.

Saying that is the one unforgivable sin, btw. It used to strike fear in my heart. That fear changed to trepidation after some thought. Now I think it's almost cruel to instill that idea in children. Eternal damnation...WTF?

If you have to use fear, something isn't right. Fear is for criminals and lesser beings. It is an instinct. Thought is much better. Logic is not the enemy to the soul.

My greatest spiritual challenge is learning not to control everything and achieve some kind of balance. I thought I was easy-going until I started to become mindful of the expectations I place on life and on others. Do you let people around you fuck up or not? When do you step in to "save" someone? I wrestle with that.

Christianity is easier because it gives you an easy faith in life and what comes after. Having faith that isn't given to you is much harder to achieve.
