I was the 7th child, by the time I came around they had "child development" down to a fine art.
I had sort of the opposite experience. I was the fourth of four and I think my parents were tired by the time I came around. I got away with a lot more than my older siblings.
Still, I got back-handed for saying "damn" one time and manners and respect were absolutely demanded (especially by my dad) so I'd say strict. Definitely strict by today's standards.
And YES with the not-living-up-to-your-potential thing (from teachers etc.). Unfortunately, I think they were right. I could have done more--President Sue.

My Mum was an educator.
Never . . . and I mean never . . . did she receive a call, note or bad report from teachers or administration about me or my siblings.
We were never threatened, bribed or pressed for "perfect" report cards.
All of us applied ourselves with age appropriate effort and encouraged curiosity.
Were we beaten? No.
But then, the professionals tell me I do repress memories.
But just the violent ones.

It's obvious how messed up you are from being beaten as a child.
OP is only five years away from a 2 year degree, I bet he can help you with that.
