I get the whole “Born This Way” philosophy, and I think it’s great; (most) people should embrace who they are (JsMom & ALWAYSBITCHEN obviously excluded). But what if being a “hater” is an innate quality as well?
I don’t know, because I am pretty neutral on most things, but it seems to me that the people who are adamant about opposing alternative lifestyles are just as entrenched in those positions as someone who lives those lifestyles. So if the people who live those lives are born that way, wouldn’t it stand to reason that, so are the people who are intolerant?
I haven’t consulted any scientific studies, nor do I care to. But it would really make sense if someone’s capacity for tolerance is at least partially genetic. I’m not saying that their intolerance is good, but it’s certainly their prerogative. And if it’s at least partially attributed to their genetic code, then how can we fault them?
Or I could be completely wrong. Whatever.

I used to think that people were a product of their environment but that is slowly evolving so yeah, I think in some instances people can be born a hater.
I don't think we can fault genetics but we don't have to tolerate what comes from it.
I know someone who adopted an infant at barely 48 hrs. old. This kid has never known anything but love in his life & he is a monster, I don't like him...at all. I don't welcome him into my home & now that he's getting older I would prefer that he not even know the directions to my house. I just know that one day he'll make the evening news for a horror I can only imagine.

I think intolerance is learned whereas I think sexual preference (for example) is largely genetic. I guess it depends on what you're calling "alternative lifestyles".
And intolerance can be unlearned. I used to be largely opposed to gay anything (in my early 20's, I would have told you "hell no, I wouldn't want someone who is gay teaching my [future] kids". My opinions/feelings have completely changed over the years. I wouldn't care at all now.
I lurve the gays, but the illegals piss me off. Am I tolerant or intolerant?
Most people aren't all one way (except the crazy religious nuts, but I don't consider them individual "people," they are part of a herd). I don't think there is black or white anything anymore.
