Rather than us having to show pictures of a dead Osama, I think we should be demanding pictures of Osama alive and well.
LC, I totally understand why the choice was taken away...1) it could potentially further inflame his followers and endanger our troops/citizens overseas, 2) it brings us down to "their" level (spiking the football as Obama said) and 3) it STILL wouldn't satisfy the conspirary theorists...they'll just fucking say they're fakes.
So what do we gain by publishing them? Satisfying some morbid curiosity and MAYBE convincing some people that we actually killed him. Oh, and showing how tough we are.
IMO, not showing the pics (at this time) is absolutely the right thing to do. If someone (or some group or country) wants to offer up credible "proof" that he's still alive, I might reconsider.

Pictures of a dead Bin Laden is what a good sheethead understands. The violence that Americans call gore is a right of passage in that god forsaken place. The pictures should be released over there. They will make it back here.
I think a picture of him dead will make many of them camel humpers jump down and realize the jig is up. Without him alive they will lose the fear of his entire organization.
They are a violent breed, and emotion is 98% of their brains.

We shouldn't stoop to that level. I agree with Duchess and OP...we can and should take the moral highground in this regard.
Let THEM try to prove he's still alive vs. us proving his death.

They do not think like Americans or Limeys, they DO understand death and all its forms. In their eyes we are weak and they are the strong ones for accepting death. They DO understand subjugation as can be seen in their treatment of women.
Think of a pack of wild dogs, that is the mentality. There is no stooping to their level, only looking at them straight in the eyes and saying "sit Ubu" will work.

I see what you're saying but I still don't want to engage them at that level. If I thought putting out the photos would cause them to cower, I might be for it but I don't think that's the case. Using your wild dog analogy, I think they'd just get more rabid.
Looks like we had a super secret (not so secret now) helicopter though! Cool.

You don't have the intelligence to set "traps" for anybody, even me.
