Closing arguments in the Steven Powell voyeurism began Tuesday after Powell's attorneys tried to have most of the case thrown out at the last minute Monday.

SALT LAKE CITY — Steven Powell is set to appear in a Tacoma, Wash. courtroom this afternoon to be sentenced on voyeurism charges.

The mother of Powell's two victims is set to testify on what punishments she feels should be handed down. A jury found Powell guilty on 14 counts of voyeurism last month, and defense attorneys are pushing for a 10 year prison sentence.

But his lawyers are hoping for something much shorter. They are expected to argue for one year behind bars, and they contend a 10-year stint is almost the length of a second-degree murder sentence.

They plan to make their case that Powell's offenses were "unranked" - or less legally severe crimes - when he committed them in 2006.

There has been some speculation that sentence could be reduced, though, if Powell has information about what happened to his daughter-in- law, Susan. However, prosecutor Grant Blinn says that is unlikely.

"We have no plans for reduction in exchange for information. It has not been discussed," he said.

During Powell's trial, there was very little mention of the missing mother of two. A pre-sentence report revealed that Powell had written about her in many journal entries and said that he had hoped to marry her. He wanted her to leave her husband, Josh Powell, and run away with him.

Prosecutors couldn't mention Powell's journalized sexual tension with Susan Powell during the trial, but legal analyst Kent Morgan says they can now.

The mother of Powell's victims addressed him at sentencing, trembling and tearful as she stood with her back to him. She said she is still waiting for an apology.

'You've sat there smugly and acted as though it's perfectly normal to have committed your crimes,' she said. 'I'm so angry. I'm angry for the hurt you caused my children. You caused them embarrassment and heartache'

Powell, wearing a grey jail uniform, declined to speak in court.

Deputy prosecutor Grant Blinn asked for an exceptional 10-year sentence, noting the number of offenses and that Powell not only secretly watched the girls, but 'memorialised' his offence by recording them so he could watch them over and over.

Powell's lawyers, Mark Quigley and Travis Currie, argued that 10 years was far beyond what any other convicted voyeur has received in Pierce County. One other defendant charged with similar offenses received a sentence of 261 days, but he took responsibility for his crimes.

Mr Quigley urged Judge Ronald Culpepper to pay no mind to the intense media attention on the case.

'We can't ignore the fact that there's intense public interest in the outcome of this case,' he said. 'I would ask you not to punish Mr Powell for the conduct of his son.'

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Utah investigators handling the case of missing mother Susan Powell examined her father-in-law's cell phone, calendar and emails earlier this year – more than two years after she disappeared.

Records obtained by The Associated Press under Washington state public records laws indicate that authorities made little effort to explore Steve Powell's activities after Susan Powell disappeared in December 2009, even though her family has long suggested that he might know something about where she is. They only began the more intensive effort in April of this year after a former co-worker of Steven Powell's said he had talked about traveling to Utah in the weeks close to when she went missing.

Investigators had largely focused their time on Susan Powell's husband, Josh, who killed himself and the couple's two young children earlier this year. Utah investigators said they can't discuss details of the case, but Washington state officials have said they believe Josh Powell killed his wife. They also say his father may know more about the disappearance than he's letting on.

Anne Bremner, an attorney for Susan Powell's parents, said they had expressed those concerns from the beginning about Steve Powell.

The family's concerns were exacerbated by how Steve Powell had acted around Susan Powell. And they escalated to a new level in the summer of 2011, when a search warrant at the home where Steve and Josh Powell lived found journals and photos suggesting that Steve Powell had an extremely sexual and emotional draw to his daughter-in-law.

The Associated Press reported Thursday that some 4,500 images in a folder dedicated to Susan Powell included shots of her out in public, apparently unaware that a camera was focused on her. Steve Powell wrote in journals that he took sexual pleasure in looking at videos and images he captured of her.

"Oh my god, those journals. I couldn't read them all," Bremner said. "The fact that Steven had that amazingly bizarre obsession with Susan – chronicled page after page – that alone would make him somebody you'd want to look that."

Sgt. Mike Powell, a spokesman for the police department in West Valley City, Utah, said he can't discuss details of the investigation but noted that the agency has spent countless hours on the case. The investigation remains active, though Powell said investigators have reduced their focus on the case.

Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist, who oversaw the voyeurism case against Steve Powell in Washington state, said Powell likely knows more than he's telling but that he's not a reliable person even if he did speak. Powell is in prison serving his voyeurism sentence and could be released as early as May.

"Barring new evidence emerging, we're done with Mr. Powell," Lindquist said.

Utah investigators say that Steve Powell has not cooperated with the Susan Powell investigation, but that still didn't initially trigger a more thorough assessment of him. In fact, an investigator said in one email obtained by AP that they did not take Steve Powell's cell phone or mobile internet card during the 2011 search at his home.

In early April 2012, a co-worker of Steve Powell's went public with her recollection that he talked about going on a snowy camping trip with his son and grandchildren in Utah around the time Susan Powell disappeared. She had previously emailed authorities about that conversation.

The day after Jennifer Silva told her story to AP, detectives in Utah began checking with officials at the Washington state Department of Corrections, where Powell had worked around the time Susan Powell disappeared. They began asking where Steve Powell was assigned and what clients he was working with in December 2009.

Susan Powell was last seen on Sunday, December 6 of 2009. Steve Powell's work calendar is blank the following day, and he took sick leave the two days after.

Investigators also expanded their assessment of Steve Powell in April 2012, analyzing his phone and SIM card. Investigators also explicitly asked for his emails from 2009.

Powell, 30, had been engaged in a legal battle with the parents of his missing sister-in-law, Susan Cox Powell, over the proceeds of as much as $3.5 million in life insurance paid out after Josh Powell killed himself and the couple’s two young boys in February 2012.

Josh Powell had designated his brother Michael and his sister Alina as beneficiaries on the life insurance policies in October 2011, four months before he died. He was scheduled to be released from prison early, but his relocation plan got quashed when a Tacoma landlord rescinded his offer to house the registered sex offender. Powell's staying put until he can come up with another plan, or until March (when his full sentence expires). Good.

In the meanwhile, the family of the two neighbor girls who were secretly taped by Powell while they were bathing, won a settlement of $1.8 million against him. Powell's acting as his own lawyer and petitioning to have the judge-awarded settlement repealed. He claims the plaintiff's lawyer, Ann Bremner, is grandstanding and pushing him because she believes he knows what happened to Susan Powell. Too bad. I think he knows, too.

LE has stated that they don't think Steven Powell was involved in Susan's disappearance (and very likely, her death), but they believe he may know what happened to her. LE has also recently stated that they now believe Josh Powell's brother Michael helped him to dispose of Susan's body. Michael killed himself in February.

Steven Powell Released from Prison



Steven Powell is due to be released Sunday from the Washington state prison where he’s been serving 30 months for voyeurism. Department of Corrections spokeswoman Norah West said Monday that Powell is scheduled to complete his sentence March 23.

Powell is the father-in-law of Utah mother Susan Cox-Powell, who disappeared in 2009. His son, Josh Powell, was a suspect before he killed himself and his two children in an explosive house fire in 2012. (HOTD: Later, his other son Michael was announced as a suspect in helping Josh to dispose of his wife Susan's remains-- Michael killed himself last year.)

He was forced to give up his home in Washington as a result of the $2 million civil suit judgment he owes the family of the little girls next door -- the ones he taped in the bathroom.

The neighbors bought the home which still has some of the creep's personal belongings in it. They've released it to Susan's family (the Coxes) so that it can be thoroughly searched -- no warrants required.

The home has been searched by LE before, but reportedly not with cadaver dogs and nothing was torn apart in the original LE searches. Susan's family is expected to do just that within the next few weeks.

The Cox family is also filing to have Susan declared legally dead -- it's coming up on a five years since she "disappeared".

Steven Powell Arrested Again



The creeper was released from prison in March after serving 30 months for voyeurism. He had taken photos of two little girls in the house next to his using the bathroom.

While Steven Powell was in incarcerated for child voyeurism, his son Josh killed himself and his two sons at the Powell family home. Police believe Josh Powell killed his wife and hid her body years earlier, with the help of at least his brother Michael Powell (who also committed suicide while his POS father was incarcerated).

Steven Powell was charged with child pornography and voyeurism initially, but the judge ruled that the photos of children found in a search of his home did not depict sexual conduct and were therefore not pornography. This summer, an appellate judge reversed that decision, fortunately. Today he was arrested for child pornography in Tacoma, Washington.

Powell will appear in court tomorrow. I hope he isn't released and winds up getting a long sentence. Susan Powell's parents believe that the narcissistic perv knows where his son hid their daughter's body; police suspect the same. If so, I hope he cracks and gives them the info needed so the family can bury her remains -- but the only way I can see him doing the decent thing is if he gets some kind of deal outta it.
