Warrensville Heights police shoot a man after he kills a 5-year-old boy
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Warrensville Heights police shot a man this morning in the 18900 block of Harvard Avenue.
Julian Whitaker, 31, killed his girlfriend's 5-year-old son by slashing his throat about 8:30 a.m., police said.
The boy's 10-year-old sister was also cut, police said.
A 5-year-old girl was injured in a passing car as the shots were fired. Police said the child and her mother were driving by the house when something struck the car window and glass struck the child. The mother pulled into the nearby fire station for help. The child was treated for minor cuts at MetroHealth Medical Center.
"I heard gunshots," neighbor Larry Taylor said. "I'm a Vietnam veteran and I hit the ground."
The home is in Cleveland on the Warrensville Heights border. Neighbors said the couple worked at the nearby Willow Park Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Neighbors said the couple moved in only two weeks ago.
Police said the 10-year-old ran to the nursing home this morning to get her mother. Warrensville Heights police were called and three officers arrived. She was also suffered "minor knife cuts," according to police. She was treated at MetroHealth Medical Center.
When Warrensville Heights police approached the house, they were confronted by a man with a knife. They ordered him to drop it, but he didn't comply, Cleveland police Deputy Chief Ed Tomba said.
"The officers were forced to shoot him," he said.
Cuyahoga County coroner's investigators and police from both cities are at the scene, where the street is closed several blocks in each direction.
Police are using a metal detector to search for 11 bullet casings in a neighbor's front yard.
One of the couple's co-workers was at the scene. She said, "I can't believe he would do this. He is such a nice guy. Very personable, got along with everyone and was always willing to help."
The woman, known as Kiki, is just as nice, the co-worker said.
Whitaker was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. His condition is not yet available.
