i'd be interested in knowing whether Appalachian Power Co. and Kentucky Power Co. are in fact coal mining fronts or connected to coal mining.

What bugs me is that they use your ssn to get the life insurance, and its all legal.

old people life insurance is pretty high, the secret is to play the odds with high risk individuals who are younger and may well die young.
drug addicts come readily to mind, they would sell their SSN for a few bucks.
