This one of the most high profile cases in Tasmania ever. At 18.30hours last night Police arrested a man in the 8 year mystery as to who killed Daniel Morcombe. Daniel went missing whilst waiting at a bustop to go and buy Christmas presents for his family. He was an altar boy and I have posted some links if you want to have a look at what people are saying.

I don't know if you guys would be interested or not. This case traumatised the whole of Australia. The man who took Daniel is now a 41 year old white male. Apparently he had been on the police radar for a long time. This guy will not serve his full term in jail I suspect. He has done a great crime. It's THE first story on the news today and last night. He parents are gorgeous people, did'nt deserve this. Daniel has a twin brother.

I wonder how the police know he was guilty of interfering with a corpse? Doesn't this suggest that the police know where this child's body was or used to be?

I once thought all murder suspect should be forced to consume truth serum ( it's just a drug not physical torture). Then I read that when the FBI was experimenting with this years ago, that many criminals enjoyed it and asked for more.

What is an SES worker? A trained searcher? Do they let untrained people search in Australia?
Not letting untrained people search bothers me. What good will it do if the body is found 2 months later by a trained searcher, but most of the evidence has degraded or washed away by that time.

Australia is a tiny place. How are "impartial" jurors found in a big case?

This guy won't survive after this. This killing is a high profile case. We have 22 million people. The law works differently here. And I think there wont be a trial i think they have a confession as well as other evidence that's why they can make those other charges.

SES worker is a very important volunteer service in this country stands for State Emergency Services. They take care of bushfires and stuff like that.

Daniel was murdered 8 years ago, all they will have is skeletal remains. But the parents desperately want their child back so that can bury him properly. absolutely horrible devsatating case.

Daniel Morcombe's parents say they hope to visit the "muddy jungle" where police are searching for their son's remains within the next couple of days.

A 41-year-old man has appeared in court in Brisbane charged with the murder of the Sunshine Coast teenager, who disappeared while on his way to buy Christmas presents in December 2003.

The man, who cannot be named, is also charged with deprivation of liberty, indecent treatment of a child, and interfering with a corpse.

He was arrested on Saturday as police and SES search teams descended on Beeburrum state forest, near the Glass House Mountains north of Brisbane, in an apparent search for Daniel's body.

This morning Daniel's parents, Bruce and Denise Morcombe, spoke to reporters outside their Maroochydore home.

"With any luck we'll find Daniel and bring him home - and that's what Australia wants," Mr Morcombe said.

He said the family expected to visit the search area in the next couple of days, saying from what he had seen of it on the TV it looked like a "muddy jungle".

"That's something that we want to do - I need to know where Daniel is ... and what sort of area he was taken to," said Daniel's mum Denise.

Earlier, the accused killer sat impassively in the dock during a brief appearance in the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

The man, who was wearing a brown prisoner's jumper and blue jeans but was not handcuffed, was remanded in custody to face court again on September 26.

His lawyer, Tim Meehan, said his client would defend the charges and would apply for Supreme Court bail in the coming weeks.

Daniel was 13 when he disappeared while waiting for a bus at Woombye on the Sunshine Coast on December 7, 2003.

Mr Morcombe has called for calm and restraint from the public while the court proceedings are underway.

He said while Saturday's arrest was a "tremendous step forward", the family realised there was still a long way to go before the case was settled.

"We are aware it may still be a couple of years or even longer before this matter has fully been run out," he said.

"At the end of the day we want the right person to have a guilty verdict, and we want to find Daniel. That's why we are always cautious and measured and try and do the right thing to make sure that we are heading forward.

"[The police] certainly haven't found any of Daniel's remains or anything significant. We have a long way to go but hopefully we will march towards a guilty verdict from here.

"We are just really pleased [with] where we are and [we will] let the legal process take its course."

More police joined the search for Daniel's remains in rugged bushland on the Sunshine Coast this morning.

Fifty police and SES volunteers yesterday combed an area behind a macadamia farm in the Beerburrum State Forest, about 40 kilometres from where the teenager disappeared in 2003.

The area was flooded in January, making the search more difficult.

The police service has vowed to continue until any remains are found.

"We're seeing a painstaking forensic search going on in the Glass House Mountains," Premier Anna Bligh said.

"There's still a very long path here, and we should all work to keep Daniel's memory alive while that happens."

At the site yesterday was Queensland's leading forensic pathologist Peter Ellis, who was involved in identifying victims of the 2002 Bali bombings and the 2004 Asian tsunami.

A police spokesman said the pathologist's attendance was standard procedure.

Mr Morcombe says while he and his wife Denise hope to see justice done at some stage with a guilty verdict, their energy remains focused on finding their son.

"We are still looking for Daniel and that is the personal focus for us to see if we can find Daniel. The person that is responsible picked on the wrong family - we would never give up," he said.

"Closure is not a word that we're very comfortable with. A man's been charged. Our priority as parents of Daniel is to find Daniel."

Ms Morcombe said Daniel's remains needed to be found so he could receive a proper burial.

"He needs to be buried with dignity," she said.

Map: Beerwah Queensland Police have confirmed that bones found at a crime scene in bushland on the Sunshine Coast belong to missing teenager Daniel Morcombe.

But the search for more evidence is expected to continue for weeks and police have vowed to continue until every area is exhausted.

"We're hopeful that more remains and other forensic evidence will be found," Deputy Police Commissioner Ross Barnett said on Sunday.

"As long as it takes, we're not going to walk away from that search until we have exhausted absolutely every area.

"It will be at least several weeks."

One week ago, three bones and a pair of shoes were found in Beerburrum State Forest near Beerwah, the site police have been searching since the arrest of a suspect in Daniel's murder case.

A forensic lab conducting DNA testing in Adelaide confirmed the bones were Daniel's on Saturday night.

His parents Bruce and Denise Morcombe have been notified of the development and released a statement saying it is the "expected shock we have all been waiting for".

"Today's news is extremely sad for us all and although we knew in our hearts the search area was Daniel's final resting place, the news of the scientific confirmation is still enormously difficult to comprehend," they said in the statement, read by Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson.

The family plans to front the media tomorrow morning.

Commissioner Atkinson says the identification is a vital part of the investigation.

"There has always been two concurrent aspects to this investigation, and they have been firstly to determine if there was sufficient evidence to support charges against any person - that has occurred," he said.

"The other concurrent aspect of this has always been to find Daniel, and that has now occurred.

"Obviously Bruce and Denise have been advised and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this time."


Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says her thoughts are with the Morcombe family.

"While this no doubt provides evidence that can be used in the court, it is just terribly sad sad news," she said.

"I think every parent would keep alive a little flame of hope and to have that flame dashed today I think is very distressing news for the Morcombe family and for all of us who kept that flame alive."

Mr Barnett says a white four-wheel drive Mitsubishi Pajero has been seized on Russell Island in Moreton Bay, south of Brisbane in relation to the investigation.

Police are also inspecting buildings on the search site but would not reveal any further details.

The deputy commissioner says police are limited in how much they can say on the forensic testing because the results are linked to the murder case against Brett Peter Cowan.

Police have charged Cowan with a number of offences, including with Daniel's abduction and murder.

The father of three has signalled he will fight the charges.

A SWIFT succession of finds in the search for Daniel Morcombe's remains has given his parents renewed hope of burying their boy by Christmas.

Daniel's parents, Denise and Bruce, had hoped to hold their son's funeral on the anniversary of his disappearance but were warned it could take longer to recover most of the 13-year-old's remains, the Courier-Mail reported.

However, Mrs Morcombe said three discoveries of human bones since Thursday had raised her hopes that a service on the significant date was possible.

"It's just a matter of time (before the next find)," she said.

"As sad as it is, we don't want (the search) to drag on for months and months." Police said the remains, found in the primary search site off Kings Rd in the Glass House Mountains, would be forensically tested.

This comes after three bones unearthed last month were confirmed to be Daniel's.

Forensic testing of two Globe sneakers, found about 10m apart at the primary search area, was still ongoing.

While the Morcombes remained focused on finding Daniel's remains, they also hoped to recover his distinctive fob-style pocket watch with "Dan" engraved on it, which he was carrying when he vanished while waiting for a bus at Woombye in December 2003.

"He bought it for himself but (Daniel's twin) Brad had got it engraved early for him for his (14^th) birthday," Mrs Morcombe said.

"That would be (sentimental) and there's a wallet too."

PEOPLE launching online attacks on the man charged with murdering Daniel Morcombe have been warned they are “just one key stroke away” from being charged or aborting the trial.

Since Brett Peter Cowan was arrested and charged with the 2003 abduction and murder of 13-year-old Daniel, social networking sites have been flooded with “hate groups”.

Tim Meehan, the lawyer representing the accused, said the malicious comments made on these pages could break a variety of state and federal laws. “These include using a telecommunications device to harass or threaten violence,” he said.

“There is understandably public outrage over Daniel’s disappearance.

“There is a lot of emotion in the community. In their minds they have already determined my client is guilty, not without the presumption of innocence.

“But they are undertaking an offence with these comments online.”

Mr Meehan said people were mistakenly believing their online comments were anonymous.

“However, their comments can be tracked to their IP address,” he said

“People are only a few strokes away from trouble.”

Mr Meehan said his other concern was that the malicious comments would not enable his client to have a fair trial in Queensland.

“No one wants the trial to fall apart,” he said.

“Police want to ensure this case goes to trial, so too do the magistrates and the judges.

“I’m warning people they have to be very careful about what they say online.”

Mr Meehan said he thought the media approach to Cowan being charged had been quite tempered.

“I have not seen anything in the media I would consider outrageous,” he said.

“I’m really quite happy with the media coverage.”

Mr Meehan said his client was well aware of the public sentiment towards him.

“He says he is not guilty and plans to go to trial,” he said.

Tomorrow, they will visit students at Emmaus College in north Rockhampton.

Mrs Morcombe says they are prepared to answer some difficult questions from school students.

"Bruce and I have organised this road trip to speak to a number of schools on the way just to tell them Daniel's story," she said.

"We are letting them know he was a real boy and we just have to give them a few safety messages - we're not there to scare the kids.

"We just want to make sure that when they feel uncomfortable or unsafe, they know how to remove themselves for a dangerous situation and tell someone straight away they can trust."

Mr Morcombe says he hopes their story will have a positive impact.

"We're looking forward to it - it'll be challenging certainly but we enjoy driving and we enjoy talking to kids on how to keep safe," he said.

"I think it's a good combination and hopefully it makes a big, big difference to the impact of absorbing those messages that we're trying to get across to the kids."

The parents of murdered Queensland teenager Daniel Morcombe will share their story with residents in Cairns in the state's far north on Saturday.

Daniel Morcombe was 13 when he disappeared while waiting for a bus at Woombye on the Sunshine Coast hinterland in 2003, sparking the largest missing persons case in Queensland's history.

Bruce and Denise Morcombe are touring 20 schools on a regional road trip from Brisbane to Cairns as part of National Child Safety week.

Mr Morcombe says the final event for Child Protection Week will be held at the Cairns Esplanade on Saturday at 2:00pm (AEST).

For those of you who don't know Australia very well. Cairns is at the top end of Queensland. Queensland is seen as the "Sunshine State" it's similar to Florida. Cairns is an extremely popular tourist destination with alot of transients. This includes backpackers, caravan parks (trailer parks), tourists etc.

These destinations can also be easy prey for predators which is why I think the Morcombes have strategically picked up along the coast of Queensland. I am not sure if Cairns was a destination for Oprah when she was here, but I would say it probably would have been as it is such a high profile tourist town.

As you have probably seen, the reporting on Daniel's case has been sparce in comparison to other cases. I think that the police are being extremely careful to let out no information so that the defendant can not claim he has been predjudiced against. We have extremely leniant laws here in Australia in comparison to US. The privacy laws are tight and this can work to the advantage of criminals and sexual predators in this country. We have no 'sex offender' list in this country, so we have no idea where the sex offenders are.

Bruce and Denise Morcombe have revealed more about the anguish which surrounded their eight-year fight to discover what happened to their son Daniel.

Speaking to the Nine Network last night, Daniel's mother Denise said the last few weeks have been difficult, following the discovery of some of his bones and the charging of 42-year-old Brett Peter Cowan with his abduction and murder.

Daniel's father Bruce says he felt helpless as the search for his son got underway in 2003, describing it as worse than a nightmare and the hours ticking away as absolute agony.

Also ninemsn are not reliable but have put out Mr Morcombes latest statement which is also on video.


"The last few weeks have been extremely difficult, especially with the arrest and then some bones were found," Denise Morcombe has told the Nine Network.

"It's like a knife goes in your chest, every single phone call.

"And then ... we've just got to wait for the next lot of bones to be found.

"Everyone's talking about bones ... that's our son. He belonged to us, he was a little human being."

Daniel had been waiting for a catch a bus to get his hair cut and buy Christmas presents for his family when he disappeared.

Bruce Morcombe said he felt helpless as the initial search for his boy got underway.

"That evening was absolutely horrendous," he said.

"It was worse than a nightmare, the hours just were absolute agony.

"We felt Daniel was in danger somewhere and were helpless."

As the days ticked by, Mr Morcombe said he followed up every single lead in the case, even meeting with criminal identities in the search for a breakthrough.

At other times he conducted private searches, using mud maps and other information passed on by people anxious to help.

Mr and Ms Morcombe said imagining what Daniel must have gone through was almost unbearable.

"Just thinking how scared he would've been," Ms Morcombe said.

"Even when he was a little boy he used to always get scared at night and come and sleep on the floor next to our bed."

Mr and Mrs Morcombe now run the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, an organisation committed to promoting child safety (www.danielmorcombe.com.au).

I have gone looking everywhere I cannot find a picture of the suspect. They are really keeping his identity under wraps. Here is the original sketch. Poor little Daniel used to get frightened at home sometimes and would sleep on the floor in his parents room. Imagine how much fear must have gone through him when this grubby suspect approached him. His heart would have failed him like a frightened little bird.

Brett Peter Cowan murderer (allegedly) of little Daniel Morcombe is really pissed off at the moment because he was brought from the jail to the court today and the dawn start was 'too early'. He was beefed also, because his appearance was not required *yawn*.

Brett Peter Cowan, 41, has been in custody since his arrest last month over the murder of the Sunshine Coast teenager in the Glass House Mountains on December 7, 2003.

He has also been charged with deprivation of liberty, child stealing, indecent treatment and misconduct with a corpse in relation to the 13-year-old.

Cowan was brought from jail to the cells of the Brisbane Magistrates Court today, but defence lawyer Tim Meehan said he didn't need his client to be present in court.

In the 41-year-old's absence, the prosecution described the brief of evidence as "fairly substantial", with more than 70 statements ready to be delivered to the defence today.

A full brief is expected to be prepared by November 28.

Deputy chief magistrate Brian Hine adjourned the case until December 12 and remanded Cowan in custody.

His appearance will be by videolink from the jail on that date.

Outside court, Mr Meehan said his client was frustrated that he'd been brought to court.

"He knew that I'd written to the court and to the jail as well, so he's frustrated by the fact that he was brought in and really didn't need to be here," he said.

"He's just happy that now we have some movement and hopefully the matters will gain some momentum and that he can work toward clearing his name."

Mr Meehan said Cowan was advised last week that he would be brought to court ahead of today's mention of his case.

"It was a waste of his time certainly. He's frustrated by the fact he was woken up at 5am in order to be brought in," he said.

"He understands that he's in a special position, I suppose, considering the nature of the allegations against him and that really the court just wants to make sure that everything is done properly."

Mr Meehan said he was surprised the prosecution expected to have all their material to him by November 28 given the length of the investigation.

"It'll be interesting to see what they say a full brief of evidence is," he said.

"I've been told variously that there are some 10,000 witness statements in relation to the matter, and there are some 18,000 individual job logs. I'd be very surprised if we receive that volume of material by November 28."

Mr Meehan said his client still intended to apply for bail.

Queensland police expect to finish their search for the remains of murdered Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe at a site near Beerwah next week.

Commissioner Bob Atkinson has informed the Morcombe family about the plans to end the search.

The search started in August and bones and shoes found at the site have been identified as those belonging to the 13 year-old who disappeared in 2003.

Brett Peter Cowan, 42, is facing five charges including murder, child stealing and interfering with a corpse.

The lawyer for the family of Daniel Morcombe says police have made significant discoveries in the search for the Sunshine Coast teenager's remains.

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson has announced the search is expected to end next week.

He has previously revealed that three bones and a pair of shoes found at the site belonged to the 13 year-old.

Solicitor Peter Boyce says more remains have since been found.

"It's significant but I can't reveal that because that's part of the evidence," Mr Boyce said.

"I'm sure that most people will be very surprised about what has been found and that's really a matter for the police as to how much they disclose."

Police say they have been in contact with the Morcombe family about the plans to end the search.

"The QPS (Queensland Police Service) has talked with a range of experts who have been consulting on the search, and conducted an external peer review to ensure that best practice has been followed during the process," Commissioner Atkinson said.

"I acknowledge the police and SES volunteers who have worked tirelessly in incredibly difficult terrain.

"I am sure the people of Queensland are grateful for their unrelenting efforts in locating remains which have been DNA tested as belonging to Daniel."

The parents of Queensland boy Daniel Morcombe say they are waiting to bury their son, almost a year after his remains were found.

Bruce and Denise Morcombe say they desperately want to hold a funeral and have been distressed by his remains being shipped across Australia and overseas for testing.

Daniel, 13, vanished while waiting for a bus on Queensland's Sunshine Coast in 2003. His remains were found on a farm in the Sunshine Coast hinterland last year.

Perth man Brett Peter Cowan has been charged with Daniel's abduction and murder.

Mr Morcombe says he understands the tests take time, but after almost 11 months he and his wife are "getting anxious and a little frustrated".

"(We're) talking 11 months with testing still ongoing. (It) defies belief. It's not right," he told The Courier-Mail.

Ms Morcombe said she was distressed about Daniel's remains being sent around Australia and overseas for testing.

"I don't even know what his remains are in," she said.

"They could be on someone's desk. It's disgusting and very distasteful."

"It's like they don't belong to us. They've already confiscated them and claimed ownership and we just completely find that wrong."

A representative of state coroner Michael Barnes told the newspaper an application for the release of what were believed to be Daniel's remains had not been received.

She said bodies were released for burial when they were no longer needed for investigations.

"In practice, the coroner generally only considers releasing the body when an application is received from the funeral director on behalf of the family.

"The state coroner has updated the family's legal representative about the release of the remains."
