You could.
But you'd be wrong. Whilst it was released in 1979, it stayed in the billboard charts into 1980..
No, you'd be wrong. It might have still been on the charts (near the bottom) in 1080, but it was the number 1 song for 1979.

Somebody that makes one album, with one hit single, or even worse, just a hit single and are never heard from again are a one hit wonder. A band that has hits all over the world, releases a multitude of albums and tours the world multiple times cannot be considered a one hit wonder just because it fits in the confines of a few peoples narrow minds..
When I think of 1 hit wonders I think of Casey Kasem doing the American top 40.
That's what I was thinking when I started this thread: Top 40 radio.
Specifically: U.S. Top 40 radio.
This shouldn't be so dixisive.
Yeah.. But U2, AC/DC and INXS probably only had 1 or two songs in Kasem's top 40 show in the 80s too, but should they be labelled one hit wonders?
Anyway, whatever. The beat goes on..

I don't live in a bubble or under a rock.
Mr. Phooey didn't get as much exposure as his talent warranted; he was IMO vastly underrated as an (singing canine martial) artist -- probably not unusual that you don't recognize him.
On a related note, Carl Douglas was, to me, the epitome of a one-hit wonder.
Note: I know that Hong Kong Phooey and Carl Douglas recorded their one hits in the 70s rather than the 80s -- unleashing my inner rebel here.

*sigh* it was still number 10 on Kasem's show well into January 1980, which by your definition makes it a hit if the 70s & 80s..
I would, but you'd be sad..

U2 and INXS were on the charts. They were both played on the pop stations.
If memory serves...AC/DC made it in the top 40 for 'You shook me all night long' and maybe for 'Back in Black", but generally, they weren't played on the pop stations.
No...none of those should be labeled 1 hit wonders. They also can't be compared to Midnight Oil.

Here's a classic example of a US Top 40 radio 1-hit wonder:
The group: Big Country
Song: In A Big Country
Peaked at #17 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in December of 1983.
To my knowledge, they never put anything anywhere near Top 40 radio again.
(I looked this info up on Wiki).

The Big Country lead singer committed suicide. Very sad story. The song was used in the movie Gregory's girl a scottish movie. Very good film if you ever get the chance.

I'm curious about your mystery girl, Maggot -- can't see or hear her.
I love Sophie B. Hawkins -- not only because she rocks the sleeveless flannel -- but also because she has a sultry voice and composes and belts out some tight sexy lyrics.
Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover was her only top 40 global hit, though she just missed the tail-end of the 80s with its recording.

She's saying, "I'll rock you til the daylight comes, make sure you are smiling and warm".
My mind's needed a good lather and rinse for the last couple of days, too.
