Made in America?
#1
There has been a big push in my area to shop local and support small business.

I've been out looking for the 'perfect present' for my Father and Stepmom, so I thought I'd check out a little country primitive shop that opened a couple months back.

When I entered, there was a sign on the door that stated "SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS-BUY AMERICAN". The woman behind the counter was wearing a shirt that read 'save American business-shop local!', and there were several other signs around the business that stated the same thing.

Every item I looked at in that shop had 'Made in China', 'Made in Hong Kong', or 'Made in Indonesia', printed on it.

I asked the woman if she had anything for sale that was made by an actual American, she asked me to leave-no biggie, I wasn't going to buy some piece of crap made in China anyway.

Now, I'm all for the local business-but I'd prefer to buy local product as well.

If a Small business owner is going to tout "BUY LOCAL"-don't you think they should buy local as well?

Wow...asked you to leave because you asked a simple question. That's a hell of a way to do business. 78

Oops, neglected to answer your question...

...yes, absolutely.

I think she may have been embarrassed, because I was pointing at one of the 'save American business' signs when I asked it.Smiley_emoticons_smile

Your question was relevant & as a business owner she should have taken the time to answer it or attempt to explain the discrepancy.

I can't believe that was the entire story regarding you being asked to leave.

Actually, what she did was walk over to the door, point to it and said "If you don't like it, then don't shop here!" and I said "Fine, I didn't want to buy a piece of overpriced Chinese shit anyway" and walked out.

I will say that I kinda started it by yelling sweet baby Jesus when I picked up a Christmas Tree Skirt (Made in Hong Kong) and saw a $73.00 price tag. I was the only one in the store, and she was following me around-straightening up everything I touched. I wanted to be nice and do my part to keep her busy, so I touched a lot of things 17-all way overpriced.

I knew that wasn't the whole story. You totally left out the part about how you were an obnoxious bitch. Thanks, I got it now.

Job well done. Idiots like that need mega-doses of cognitive dissonance.

She'd probably go broke.

I don't think I've ever bought something from a local craft fair. That stuff is shit.

I'm pretty sure at least 75% of my possessions were made in China. Smiley_emoticons_slash

(snipped from OP)

I would have reacted the exact same way, cannongal. I love to shop local and support local artists. What you describe is a blatant abuse of the shop local/ "Made in America" concept. While telling them off at the moment was probably very gratifying, maybe there is an opportunity to go further and find an infringement on the "Shop Local" and "Made in America" trademarks? If so, report the retailer!

For what it is worth I completely support your stance, some people are just bloody stupid.
