WATERVILLE — Two windows were smashed out late Friday night at the home of missing toddler Ayla Reynolds, police said in a news release Saturday morning.

No one was injured and police said they did not find any rocks or objects, "leading officers to believe that the windows were broken by a bat or another object that was taken away."

"These types of calls are actually quite serious," said Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey. "There is a chance that someone could be injured by flying glass. It scares people. And, it could escalate into a confrontation between the occupants of a home and the suspect."
Phoebe DiPietro called 911 about 11:13 p.m. Friday, saying someone was throwing things through windows. Three Waterville officers responded within a few minutes, police said.

The Kennebec County Sheriff's Office responded as well with a dog-tracking unit and followed a track that ended on Purington Street, which is a small side street near the home.

Police said whoever is responsible for the incident faces a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief and other potential charges.

Police say they’ve fingered a Maine man for “cowardly” smashing the windows of the Waterville home where rosy-cheeked tot Ayla Reynolds was last seen nearly two months ago, though what prompted the vandalism remains unclear.

Jeremy Hanson, 19, of Clinton, Maine, will be summonsed to court on charges of criminal mischief and violating the conditions of his release from previous charges, according to Waterville police. Authorities didn’t specify Hanson’s motive in smashing two of the windows in the modest Violette Avenue home on Feb. 3, but said he admitted to being the vigilante vandal in an interview last night at the police station.

It was unclear what connection, if any, Hanson has to Reynolds’ father, Justin DiPietro, or anyone else in his family, police said.

The mother of missing toddler Ayla Reynolds is vowing to sue the Department of Health and Human Services for not checking on the girl while she was in her father's custody. Trista Reynolds says her sister had been taking care of Ayla while she was in rehab. But shortly after, DHHS took the toddler to live with her father, Justin DiPietro. Reynolds says DHHS promised to conduct background checks on everyone in the DiPietro home, and check on the toddler. But Reynolds says that was never done, even though she says she called the Department several times with concerns about her daughter's safety. DHHS tells News 13 it can't comment on this specific case because of Maine's confidentiality laws, but the director of the Office of Child and Family Services says if a biological parent wants custody of a child, the Department will do a background check on that parent. If the parent passes the background check, the Department typically won't check on the child again unless someone warns that the child might be in danger. The Department maintains that it is a parent's right to have custody of his or her own child.

Reynolds also says she's learned new information from investigators about what Justin DiPietro may have done before and after his daughter went missing. According to Reynolds, DiPietro took out a $25,000 life insurance policy on his daughter after he got custody. Reynolds also says DiPietro told her he filed to end his child support payments after Ayla went missing. Additionally, Reynolds says investigators told her DiPietro failed his polygraph test, and left the building when he was shown pictures of his daughter's blood in his basement. Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland said he didn't have any comment about these allegations.

WATERVILLE, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- It has been more than two months since Ayla Reynolds was reported missing. People in the community continue to help get the word out about the toddler's disappearance.

People gathered outside Waterville City Hall Saturday for a vigil to honor Ayla. Organizers asked people to bring teddy bears to symbolize hope that Ayla will be found. Ayla's parents, Trista Reynolds and Justin Dipietro did not attend the vigil. But Ayla's grandmother, Phoebe Dipietro, the lying grandmother, was there to bring a teddy bear and thank the many supporters.

Organizers say it's difficult to keep up hope that Ayla will come home safe, but they have to keep the faith.

"This little baby is still missing, two and a half months now, and we are all here to show people that everybody cares and we are all looking for Ayla" vigil organizer Karen Francis said.

Organizers of the vigil plan to donate the teddy bears they collected to various charities.

DiPietro's sister, Elisha DiPietro, stood in the crowd with her young daughter. She said she was pleased to see the community rally together.

"I'm glad that people are helping to keep Ayla's name out there in the media, and they're still supporting Ayla," she said.

DiPietro said the past few months have been difficult for her family. They are dealing with a child's absence, and public opinion is often against them.

"It's hard to see how many people hate my family without actually knowing my family. We didn't do anything wrong, and we just want Ayla home. We love Ayla, and we want her home," she said.

Trista Reynolds made the comment in response to a March 11 article in the Morning Sentinel in which Ayla’s father, Justin DiPietro, and his supporters expressed their belief that Ayla was abducted and said their reasons for believing so would be revealed “when the time is right.” WHEN IS IT THE RIGHT TIME TO TELL WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT YOUR MISSING BABY??

Reynolds questioned their assertion.

“Who says something like that unless you know something? The way I’m reading it, it’s like they’re telling me they know where my daughter is, and what happened to her.”

Three months ago, on the morning of Dec. 17, DiPietro called 911 to report Ayla missing. Police subsequently have ruled out the possibility that Ayla left the house on her own or that she was abducted, according to Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland.

McCausland also has said that the three adults who were in the home with Ayla – DiPietro, his sister Elisha DiPietro and girlfriend Courtney Roberts – haven’t told investigators everything they know.
Reynolds echoed McCausland’s remarks.

“I don’t think she was kidnapped. I really don’t,” she said. “I believe deep down that Justin knows what happened or where she is. He could change this is a matter of seconds. All three of them could — him, Elisha and Courtney. I point the blame at all of them; I can’t just point the blame at Justin.”

DiPietro couldn’t be reached for comment.

WATERVILLE, Maine — With the ground clear of winter's snow, about 100 searchers aided by tracking dogs failed to turn up any new clues Saturday as they renewed their search for a Maine toddler who's been missing for more than three months.

Volunteers, firefighters and game wardens met with police Saturday morning, then began searching woods and fields in Waterville for any sign of Ayla Reynolds, Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said.

Searchers targeted places that were not thoroughly searched over the winter when the ground was covered with snow.

"The weather conditions were ideal, and the snow's gone, so that's why the ground search was resumed today," McCausland said.

Ayla was 20 months old when she was last seen the night of Dec. 16 at her father's home in Waterville. She was reported missing the following morning when her father, Justin DiPietro, said he discovered her bed empty.

Police are treating her disappearance as a crime, but no one has been charged. An undisclosed amount of Ayla's blood was found in the partially finished basement that DiPietro used as his bedroom, and police have said DiPietro and two other adults in the home that night haven't been totally forthcoming.

Steve McCausland of the Maine Department of Public Safety say a search and rescue team, firefighters and game wardens met Saturday morning with police and are searching several areas in Waterville for any sign of Ayla Reynolds.

DiPietro has said he has no idea what happened to his daughter or who is responsible.

Police have received 988 tips and searched a five-mile swath around DiPietro's home, McCausland said. Maine State Police, the Maine Warden Service and Waterville police have spent more than $100,000 in overtime alone on the case, he said.

Investigators continue to interview people and the crime lab continues to analyze items connected to the case, but talks with DiPietro, his girlfriend and sister have broken down, McCausland said.

"They have stopped talking to us," he said.

Maine State Police are analyzing items discovered in the Kennebec River, and a source close to the investigation into missing toddler Ayla Reynolds tells News 8 those items could be connected to the Reynolds case.

Police say the items were discovered by a worker in the Kennebec River on Wednesday and were examined at the state police crime lab Thursday.

State police spokesman Steve McCausland says there is no way to tell if the items are related to the Reynolds case, but a source close to the investigation says the items discovered belong to a child and could be connected to Ayla's disappearance.

Ayla was reported missing from her father's Waterville home back in December.

WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) - Maine State Police divers seeking evidence in the disappearance of Ayla Reynolds have returned to the Kennebec River where some items were recovered two weeks ago.

State police spokesman Steve McCausland says five divers and two detectives searched an overflow area Tuesday while water was lowered for maintenance on a dam owned by NextEra Energy Inc. He says several items were found and will be reviewed by the state police crime lab.

Divers were in the same area where other items were recovered two weeks ago. Those items were also taken to the crime lab.

McCausland said it's not known whether any of the items are connected to the toddler's disappearance in December.
